3 cities bidding for 2016 US Olympic swim trials

Sports

April 24th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — USA Swimming will choose between Omaha, Neb., San Antonio and St. Louis as the site for the 2016 Olympic swimming trials. The national governing body says it will announce the host city on Saturday. Omaha has hosted the last two trials, in 2012 and 2008. Last year’s eight-day event was attended by more than 164,000 fans and the meet was broadcast live in prime time on network television. Two temporary pools were built inside the CenturyLink Center for the event.

In 2004, the trials were held in Long Beach, Calif., the first time they were held outdoors in temporary pools. In January, USA Swimming said six cities were bidding to host the trials. Former host Indianapolis, along with Greensboro, N.C., and Jacksonville, Fla., were eliminated after an evaluation team from USA Swimming, along with an outside member of the group’s board, visited each location.

Molina, Miller lead Cardinals past Nationals 3-2

Sports

April 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) — Yadier Molina drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, backing Shelby Miller’s strong start Monday night, and the St. Louis Cardinals returned to the site of their Game 5 NL division series victory last season with a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals. The other big hit for St. Louis was Allen Craig’s two-run double in the third. Miller (3-1) struck out eight in 6 2-3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits. All the Cardinals’ runs came against Dan Haren (1-3), who gave up three runs and six hits in five-plus innings. Edward Mujica pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save. The Cardinals have alternated wins and losses over their last nine games.

Washington has lost seven of 10.

Big 12 Wants Minor Bowl Games Fans Can Drive To

Sports

April 22nd, 2013 by Jim Field

The Big 12 wants to have a greater postseason presence in Florida and get into more bowls that its fans can reach by car.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says the conference would like to have agreements with five or six bowl games.

All the major college football conferences are about to ramp up negotiations with bowl organizers as they try to put together postseason lineups for 2014 and beyond.

Bowlsby and the other nine major conference commissioners, along with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick, will meet in southern California this week to pick to the final three bowls to be involved in the six-site playoff rotation. Once those are in place, the conferences can turn their attention to the other bowls.

Branstad won’t “micromanage” pink locker rooms

Sports

April 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Iowa’s governor says it’s up to the coaches, not him, to decide if a pink decor is appropriate for the locker rooms visiting football teams use in Iowa City. “I am not going to comment on the color of the locker rooms that they paint at the University of Iowa,” Branstad says. “…I don’t think it’s worthy of the governor interfering with.” Former University of Iowa coach Hayden Fry had the walls painted pink in the 1980s as a way to “psych out” visiting teams and current coach Kirk Ferentz has retained the tradition.

Two attorneys who spoke at a recent conference for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth in Iowa say the university is leaving itself open to allegations of sexism and homophobia. Governor Terry Branstad’s not convinced. “That’s a big issue, my goodness,” Branstad said, laughing. Branstad says he is not going to “micromanage” the football team. “First of all, they’re under the Board of Regents — the University of Iowa is under that — and then the Athletic Department’s under that. So I’m going to go down and tell the football coach what color he should be painting the locker room?” Branstad asked this morning. “The governor should not be doing those things.”

A spokesman for the university has said the color pink was chosen because it would have a “relaxing and calming effect” on visiting football teams, giving the Hawkeyes an advantage on the field.
