ST. LOUIS (AP) – Matt Carpenter homered, doubled and drove in three runs, Adam Wainwright tied for the major league lead with his 15th win and the St. Louis Cardinals topped the San Diego Padres 7-6 on Sunday. Jon Jay’s two-run single highlighted a four-run first inning when the Cardinals batted around against rookie Odrisamer Despaigne (3-4). Peter Bourjos and Tony Cruz each had an RBI single for St. Louis, which took three of four in the series.

Carpenter’s two-run double off Tim Stauffer in the sixth made it a three-run cushion for Wainwright (15-7), who joined the Reds’ Johnny Cueto at 15 wins. Milwaukee’s Wily Peralta was seeking his 15th later Sunday. Wainwright allowed three earned runs in seven innings with five strikeouts and one walk. He’s 5-0 at home with a 1.55 ERA against the Padres.

Seth Maness got two outs for his second save.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jeff Gyorko hit his third career grand slam and drove in five runs, sparking the San Diego Padres to a 9-5 rain-delayed victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. Gyorko’s eighth homer came on an 0-1 pitch from Kevin Siegrist (1-3) with one out in the seventh. The Padres had loaded the bases on two singles and a walk before Gyorko’s drive to left. Rain then halted play later in the inning.

The Cardinals dropped to three games back of Milwaukee for the NL Central lead. The Brewers beat Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers 3-2. San Diego won for the sixth time in its last eight games.

Iowa hosts final public scrimmage

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz wants his players focused on little more than football during fall camp. That’s why fans get one chance to see what the Hawkeyes might look like when they open the season in two weeks.

Iowa’s annual mid-camp open practice, held Saturday at Kinnick Stadium, is the only public glimpse of the Hawkeyes in August. It’s also typically the only time coach Kirk Ferentz provides updates on the program.

Ferentz says fullback Adam Cox is out for the season after tearing a knee ligament. But he also praised the competition for starting spots and kicker and punter, even though Iowa’s placekickers looked shaky on Saturday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has been suspended for the season opener against Tennessee for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. Bowe was pulled over for speeding in a Kansas City suburb on Nov. 10, and was arrested after police found a black bag containing his wallet, driver’s license and two containers of suspected marijuana. He later pleaded guilty to amended charges of defective equipment and littering, and his attorney said there was no admission of guilt for the marijuana charge, which was dismissed.

Bowe issued a statement through the NFL Players’ Association shortly after the suspension was announced in which he apologized for having to miss the Titans game on Sept. 7.

Bowe remains eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — It’s become a late summer tradition that Iowa State would like to break. If it’s the middle of August, the Cyclones are in the middle of yet another quarterback controversy.

Iowa State is again unsettled at the game’s most important position. The Cyclones have narrowed their choices down to junior Sam Richardson and sophomore Grant Rohach, and coach Paul Rhoads said Thursday that he’ll name a starter by Monday.

Iowa State opens the season at home on Aug. 30 against FCS power North Dakota State.
