KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles and safety Eric Berry have returned to practice after dealing with injuries. Left tackle Eric Fisher was absent Monday due to an illness.

Berry has missed most of the past couple weeks with a heel injury. Charles has been out the past two preseason games after hurting his foot while moving out of the dorms at the Chiefs’ training camp headquarters at Missouri Western.

Coach Andy Reid was not available to discuss their status for Thursday night’s preseason finale in Green Bay. Normally, Reid does not play his starters in the fourth preseason game, but a lackluster effort against Minnesota on Saturday night might cause him to change his approach. He indicated afterward that some starters could play against the Packers.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina and right-hander Michael Wacha are ready for the next step in their return from the disabled list. General manager John Mozeliak said Monday that Molina and Wacha will report to Double-A Springfield this week to continue their rehabilitation.

Molina has been on the disabled list since July 10 with a torn ligament in his right thumb that required surgery. Wacha has been on the DL since mid-June with a stress reaction in his right shoulder. Wacha will throw live batting practice with Springfield on Wednesday.

The Cardinals have managed to stay in the middle of the NL Central Division race without Molina and Wacha. St. Louis entered Monday night’s game in Pittsburgh just 1 1/2 games behind Milwaukee.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Matt Holliday’s two-run single in the seventh inning off Jared Hughes capped a late rally, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 on Monday night. Jon Jay’s pinch-hit single tied the game with two outs in the seventh and Holliday followed with a sharp single to left off Hughes (6-4) to score Jay and Matt Carpenter.

John Lackey (13-8) worked out of trouble early to work seven innings and pick up his second victory with the Cardinals after arriving in a trade from Boston on July 31. Trevor Rosenthal gave up a leadoff home run in the ninth to Andrew McCutchen but held on to earn his 39th save.

Pedro Alvarez hit his 18th homer in the second off Lackey, but the Pirates managed little after that to fall further behind St. Louis and first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central race.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The key to the upcoming season is clear for Iowa State. The Cyclones defense will need to play much better than it did a year ago for the program to have any hope of escaping the Big 12 basement.

For all the talk about new coordinator Mark Mangino’s revamped offense, it’s Iowa State’s defense that should be under the heaviest scrutiny. The Cyclones allowed 36 points a game last season — ranking 109th out of 125 Bowl Subdivision teams — and surrendered at least 41 points five times in nine league games.

Iowa State knows that can’t happen again this season, which starts on Saturday at home against FCS power North Dakota State.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jimmy Rollins homered and Jerome Williams tossed eight strong innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Ben Revere had a pair of hits and an RBI for Philadelphia, which took two of three from the Cardinals to claim consecutive series wins for the first time since April.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs reinstated right-hander Brian Schlitter from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday. Schlitter went on the disabled list on Aug. 9 with right shoulder inflammation. He is 2-3 with a 3.47 ERA in 53 games this season. He gave up one run and one hit in one inning during a rehab assignment on Saturday at Iowa.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs had three decent opportunities to finally score a touchdown with their first-team offense on Saturday night. They came up empty on all of them. Twice, Alex Smith was picked off by the Minnesota Vikings. The other time, coach Andy Reid opted to kick a 21-yard field goal rather than punch it into the end zone on fourth down. So much for building some positive vibes heading into their preseason finale.

“You know, I think tonight was disappointing in the sense that this was the game week and we treated it as such, so there was a little more game-planning and preparation,” Smith said after a 30-12 loss. “You’d love to have shown a little better.” That goes for games against Cincinnati and Carolina, too.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Vikings’ Matt Cassel threw for 152 yards and a touchdown in his return to Kansas City, and Minnesota rolled to a 30-12 victory over the Chiefs in a preseason game Saturday night. Cassel, benched and then released by the Chiefs two years ago, found Cordarrelle Patterson for a 53-yard scoring strike on the Vikings’ first offensive series. Teddy Bridgewater threw two TD passes to tight end Allen Reisner later in the game.

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and Chiefs counterpart Jamaal Charles dressed but did not play. Kansas City also was without wide receivers Dwayne Bowe and Junior Hemingway. Alex Smith was 14 of 24 for 124 yards with two red-zone interceptions. The Chiefs’ first-team offense still has not scored a touchdown in 16 preseason possessions.
