DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Senate has passed a bill that would allow a person in Iowa to win money in fantasy sports contests. The Senate voted 32-16 to approve the bill Thursday. It now heads to the House, where lawmakers are considering a similar bill. Current law allows people in Iowa to participate in fantasy sports contests, but they can’t win prizes. This bill would allow winnings.
Fantasy sports contests typically let participants build teams online that compete against other user-generated teams. A similar bill failed in the Senate last year. Democratic Sen. Jeff Danielson, chairman of the state government committee, says the bill would align with laws in over 40 other states.
Some lawmakers expressed concern about the out-of-state companies running fantasy sports contests and the amount of money they may collect.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs and offensive guard Paul Fanaika have agreed to terms on a three-year deal, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday night because the Chiefs have not announced the deal. Fanaika still must pass a physical for it to be complete.
The Chiefs were looking for help on the offensive line after losing three starters to free agency last offseason, and then watching starting center Rodney Hudson sign a five-year, $44.5 million deal with AFC West rival Oakland this week. Fanaika was a seventh-round draft pick of the Eagles in 2009, when Chiefs coach Andy Reid was in charge. He’s come into his own in Arizona, starting all 30 games he played in over the past two seasons.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Jeremy Maclin to a five-year deal, adding the down-the-field threat that their wide receiver group was sorely lacking last season. The contract is worth up to $55 million, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because those details were not announced.
Maclin started all 16 games for the Eagles last season. He set career highs with 85 catches for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns, and showed no lingering effects from the torn ACL that caused him to miss the entire 2013 season. His addition could mean the end of Dwayne Bowe’s tenure in Kansas City. The veteran wide receiver is due to count $14 million against the salary cap.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Left-hander Marco Gonzales strengthened his bid for a spot in the St. Louis rotation by allowed one hit over four scoreless innings in the Cardinals’ 6-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Gonzales, who didn’t give up a run over two innings in his first spring start, struck out three and walked one. The only hit off the 23-year-old was a two-out double by first baseman Freddie Freeman in the first inning.
A first-round draft choice in 2013, Gonzalez came up to the Cardinals late last year and won twice in relief during the Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was 4-2 with a 4.15 ERA in 10 regular-season games, including five starts. Braves starter Alex Wood allowed two unearned runs in the third inning before leaving with two outs. The left-hander gave up three hits, walked two and struck out one.
First baseman Matt Adams had a sacrifice fly off Wood and catcher Yadier Molina followed with a run-scoring single in the third.
AMES, Iowa — Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard underwent successful open heart bypass surgery Tuesday night at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Dr. Christopher Komanapalli, a cardio and vascular surgeon from Iowa Clinic, performed the triple bypass procedure.
Pollard is resting today in the Intensive Care Unit and is expected to remain hospitalized at Iowa Methodist Medical Center for several days.
The Pollard family wishes to offer its gratitude to the many individuals who prayed for Jamie and sent supportive messages as well as the outstanding medical teams which have been treating him.
