Arizona shuts out UCSB 3-0, advances to CWS bracket final

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Jared Oliva homered for the first time in over two months and JC Cloney pitched seven strong innings, leading Arizona to a 3-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara in a College World Series elimination game Wednesday night.

The Wildcats (46-22) will play Oklahoma State on Friday in the Bracket 1 final. They need to win that game and another Saturday against the Cowboys to reach next week’s best-of-three finals.

The Gauchos (43-20-1) went 1-2 in their first CWS appearance.

Cloney (7-4) gave up only five singles before turning the game over to Cameron Ming with a runner on base and no outs in the eighth.

The Gauchos threatened in the ninth after Clay Fisher doubled and Devon Gradford walked with no outs. Ming struck out Austin Bush, JJ Muno and Dempsey Grover to end the game.

Arizona has allowed only two runs in three CWS games.

Cardinals beat Arrieta, Cubs 7-2 to complete 3-game sweep

CHICAGO (AP) — Michael Wacha pitched into the seventh inning for his first win in nearly two months and the St. Louis Cardinals waited out Jake Arrieta before roughing up Chicago’s bullpen in a 7-2 victory over the Cubs on Wednesday.

Aledmys Diaz hit a two-run home run, and Matt Carpenter had a two-run double in a five-run sixth after Arrieta (11-2) departed. The Cardinals won their eighth straight road game — their longest streak since 1982 — and completed their first three-game sweep at Wrigley Field since 1988.

Arrieta was charged with two runs — one earned — and four hits in five innings as he struggled with control (four walks) and pitch count (106). Wacha (3-7) allowed two hits until rookie Willson Contreras’ one-out, two-run homer in the seventh ended his day as he snapped a seven-game skid. Contreras replaced Miguel Montero an inning earlier after the catcher twisted his right knee.

Nemechek docked 10 points for failing post-Iowa inspection

Sports

June 22nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

John Hunter Nemechek’s Camping World Truck Series team was docked 10 points for failing to meet the proper ride height in a post-race inspection at Iowa Speedway. The loss of those points dropped Nemechek from sixth place to a tie for ninth in the standings. Nemechek was also fined $5,000 and placed on probation through the end of 2016 for approaching the race area following an incident with Austin Wayne Self.

Nemechek’s crew chief, Gere Kennon, was fined $6,000 and also received probation for the ride height infraction. The crew chiefs for five of the top six finishers in last week’s NASCAR Xfinity race in Iowa, including the winning No. 18 car, were also put on probation through the end of 2016 because of irregularities discovered in a pre-race inspection.

Texas Tech hangs on, knocks out top seed Florida 3-2 at CWS

Sports

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Eric Gutierrez hit a two-run homer, Texas Tech picked up a huge insurance run by way of two errors on the same play in the ninth, and the Red Raiders eliminated Florida 3-2 at the College World Series on Tuesday.

It was a stunning early exit for the No. 1 national seed, which made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth after Peter Alonso’s two-run homer made it a one-run game. The game ended when Jonathan India tried to stretch a single into a double and was thrown out by left fielder Tyler Neslony.

The fifth-seeded Red Raiders (47-19) will play Thursday against the loser of the Tuesday night game between TCU and Coastal Carolina. The Gators (52-16) went 0-2 at the CWS.

Davis Martin (10-1) and Hayden Howard combined to hold Florida to six hits. Florida starter Alex Faedo (13-3) cruised until the fourth inning when Gutierrez went deep.

Frogs beat Coastal Carolina 6-1, move to CWS bracket final

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – TCU freshman star Luken Baker continued his hot hitting, going 3 for 3 with a home run, and the Horned Frogs took control of their College World Series bracket with a 6-1 victory over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday night.

The Frogs (49-16) have won their first two CWS games for the first time in four appearances and move to Friday’s Bracket 2 final. They’ll play the winner of a Thursday elimination game between Coastal Carolina and Texas Tech. A win in that game would put them in the best-of-three finals for the first time.

The Chanticleers (50-17), who beat No. 1 national seed Florida 2-1 in their first-ever CWS game on Sunday, pushed across a run in the sixth inning but otherwise didn’t do much against Brian Howard and Ryan Burnett.

Baker, who hit the winning three-run homer against Texas Tech Sunday, went deep to right in the second inning and singled in his other two at bats.
