NCAA Tournament experiencing a home run binge in regionals

Sports

June 7th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Baseball teams in the NCAA Tournament already have hit more home runs in regional play than in the entire 2015 tournament. There were 159 homers hit in 91 games through Sunday. That compares to 150 hit in 136 tournament games through the College World Series last year.

This year’s total also is the highest since new bat standards went into effect in 2011. This is the second season a flat-seam ball has been used. The new ball was put into play to increase the amount of offense in the college game. In 2014, the last year for the raised-seam ball, a total of 87 home runs were hit in 139 tournament games.

Clemson led the regionals with 12 home runs in four games before being eliminated Sunday.

Cardinals option Wong to Memphis

Sports

June 6th, 2016 by admin

The Cardinals optioned second baseman Kolten Wong to Memphis (AAA) following Sunday night’s 6-3 win over San Francisco.  The move opens up space on the team’s 25-man active roster for the anticipated activation off the disabled list of infielder Jhonny Peralta.

Wong, 25, appeared in 49 games, starting 35, with St. Louis this season, batting .222 (28-126).

Peralta injured his left thumb on March 5 during a Spring Training game and underwent surgery shortly after to repair ligament damage.  He played nine games during an injury rehabilitation assignment with stops in Single-A Peoria (five games, 3-for-13), Double-A Springfield (one game, 0-for-2) and High-A Palm Beach (three games, 3-for-11).

Cardinals rally to beat Giants again, 6-3

Sports

June 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Aledmys Diaz, Matt Adams and Yadier Molina each had an RBI during a four-run sixth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals came from behind for the second straight game to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-3 on Sunday night.

The tiebreaking run came on an RBI fielder’s choice with the bases loaded by Molina, who entered the at-bat in an 0-for-20 skid. Shortstop Brandon Crawford made an error on the play when he dropped the ball on the exchange trying to flip to second to start a double play.

Carlos Martinez (6-5) allowed three runs in six innings and Matt Carpenter had three hits and an RBI for St. Louis. Trevor Rosenthal earned his 10th save in 11 chances. Giants manager Bruce Bochy used three relievers in the sixth trying to preserve the lead for Jake Peavy (2-6), who missed a chance at his 150th career victory.
