Rizzo draws bases-loaded walk in 11th, Cubs beat Cards 4-3

Sports

August 12th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — Anthony Rizzo drew a bases-loaded walk from Zach Duke with two outs in the 11th inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Thursday night for their 10th consecutive win. Pinch-hitters Willson Contreras and Jorge Soler led off with singles against the lefty Duke (2-1) and Dexter Fowler walked to load the bases with one out. Kris Bryant struck out before Rizzo took a 3-1 pitch inside to give the Cubs their longest winning streak since getting 12 straight in 2001.

Mike Montgomery (4-5) allowed a single and two walks to load the bases in the 11th before striking out Matt Carpenter to end the threat. He won his first game for Chicago since being acquired from Seattle last month. The Cardinals fell 13 games behind Chicago in the NL Central and lost Matt Holliday in the 10th after he was hit on the right hand by Mike Montgomery’s 94 mph fastball.

Matt Holliday suffered a broken right thumb during the incident. He declined to speculate afterward on whether or not his season was over. Holliday, who left for a pinch-runner after being checked by the trainer, had singled and scored in the first inning. He’s hitting .242 with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs. Holliday was to see a hand specialist today (Friday) and then return to St. Louis.

CHICAGO (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday has left in the 10th inning against the Chicago Cubs after getting hit on the right hand by a pitch. Reliever Mike Montgomery plunked the seven-time All-Star with a 94 mph fastball on a 1-1 count with two outs and nobody on in a 3-3 game Thursday night. Holliday immediately grabbed his right arm. He was attended to and walked to first base accompanied by the trainer before leaving the field. Jeremy Hazelbaker pinch-ran for Holliday, who had singled and scored in the first inning.

Zach Johnson tied for John Deere Classic lead

Sports

August 11th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Zach Johnson made himself right at home in the John Deere Classic — again. From just up the road in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the two-time major champion shot a 6-under 65 on Thursday for a share of the lead with Patrick Rodgers and Ryan Moore in the suspended first round.

Play was delayed for 3 1/2 hours at TPC Deere Run by a storm that dropped just over an inch of rain. The round resumed at 3:08 p.m., with none of the players in the afternoon session able to finish. Johnson had five birdies in a seven-hole stretch in the bogey-free round that he started on the 10th tee. The 2012 tournament winner capped the run on the par-5 second and also birdied the par-4 sixth.

Scott Pinckney and Scott Brown were a stroke back at 66. Three-time champion Steve Stricker had a 70. Jordan Spieth chose not to defend his title because he didn’t think it would be appropriate in light of his decision to skip the Rio Olympics.

Cubs’ reliever Pedro Strop out 4-6 weeks with knee injury; Grimm recalled from AAA Iowa

Sports

August 11th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs reliever Pedro Strop needs arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will be sidelined four to six weeks. The Cubs announced Thursday that an MRI revealed a meniscus tear. Strop was injured fielding a grounder in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s victory over the Los Angeles Angels. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The timetable would make it possible for Strop to return before the end of the regular season and be available for the postseason. The NL Central-leading Cubs had planned to use Strop and Hector Rondon as setup men for closer Aroldis Chapman, who was acquired last month. The 31-year-old Strop has a 2.89 ERA in 50 games with Chicago this season.

The Cubs recalled right-hander Justin Grimm from Triple-A Iowa.

Carpenter, Peralta homer as Cardinals beat Reds 3-2

Sports

August 11th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter and Jhonny Peralta homered to back up a second straight dominant start by Jaime Garcia as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Wednesday night. Carpenter’s homer in the first inning was his second leadoff home run of the season and 11th of his career. It was also Carpenter’s second career homer against Reds starter Anthony DeScalfani.

Peralta’s solo homer in fourth was the 200th of his career. Peralta is hitting .345 in August. Garcia (9-8) needed just 85 pitches to get through 8-plus innings and 19 of his 24 outs were ground balls or strikeouts. He has given up two runs in his last 16 innings. Seung-Hwan Oh earned his 10th save.

Today, the Redbirds travel to Chicago for the first of a four-game series against the Cubs, at Wrigley Field. Pre-game coverage on KJAN begins at 6:10-p.m., with the first pitch at 7:05.

Holt sparks 8th inning rally as Reds beat Cardinals 7-4

Sports

August 10th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Duvall drove in two runs and Tyler Holt’s double drove in the game-winning run as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 on Tuesday night. Holt’s double off Matt Bowman (1-4) broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth. He then scored from second on an infield hit by Billy Hamilton after Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter bobbled a barehanded attempt to get the speedy Hamilton at first.

Duvall’s two-run single in the third broke a career high 0-for-18 skid and gave the Reds a 2-1 lead. Joey Votto had two hits, an RBI and a walk and has hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games.

Reds lefty Brandon Finnegan struck out five, but walked six in six innings. Michael Lorenzen (2-0) gave up a run in two innings of relief and Raisel Iglesias picked up his first save.

Listen for more action between the Cardinals and the Reds again this evening at 6:15, with the pre-game at 5:20, here on KJAN!
