Atlantic’s Podhajsky-McDermott take 6th at Boys State Doubles Tennis

The Atlantic boys tennis doubles team of Grant Podhajsky and Cooper McDermott ended up in 6th place after play finished Saturday at the Class 1A State Tournament. They started off with a win 6-1, 7-5 over the duo of Ben Wallace and RJ Roberts of Knoxville. In their second round match they fell to Mason Hulse and Corbin Wafful of Boone 6-4, 6-2. They then defeated Ballard’s team of Caleb Hamerlinck and Max Olson 6-2, 6-3 in consolation 2nd round play.

On Saturday in the consolation semifinals Podhajsky/McDermott defeated Jaden Heiden and Sean Moran of Denison-Schleswig 7-5, 6-3. They then went on to play in the 5th place match in which they lost 6-3, 6-3 to Riley Collins and Louis Ungs of Dubuque Wahlert.  The 6th place medal marks the second straight season the duo got to the final day of play after finishing 8th in 2017.

Glenwood’s Joel Ibanez and Adam Konfrst fell to Collins and Ungs of Dubuque Wahlert in the other Consolation Semifinal and then won the 7th place match 5-7, 7-5, 1 (2) over Heiden/Moran of Denison-Schleswig.
