ISU’s Seanna Johnson named to Preseason All-Big 12 team

Sports

October 6th, 2016 by admin

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State women’s basketball senior Seanna Johnson was named to the preseason All-Big 12 team by the Big 12 Conference coaches, the league announced Wednesday.

Johnson is the first Cyclone named to the preseason All-Big 12 team since Hallie Christofferson in 2013-14.

Johnson, who was selected to the All-Big 12 first-team last season, was second in the Big 12 in 2015-16 in points (17.0) and rebounds (9.4). She was also the only player in the nation to average over 17.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. She currently ranks 22nd in the Iowa State record books with 1,156 career points, eighth with 797 rebounds and fourth in double-doubles with 27. Johnson has also started all 90 games in her career.

Iowa State officially begins the 2016-17 season on Nov. 11 against UC-Santa Barbara at noon in Hilton Coliseum.

NCAA facing 43 concussion lawsuits after latest filings

Sports

October 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) – The NCAA is now facing 43 class-action lawsuits related to the handling of concussions by Division One football programs after 18 more were filed this week. The complaints also name college conferences and in some cases schools. The Chicago-based law firm Edelson PC has been filing the lawsuits in batches since May. The latest were filed Tuesday on behalf of former players from Texas A&M, UCLA, Maryland, Richmond, Idaho, South Carolina, Mississippi, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Alabama and Iowa.

On Monday, former players from Memphis, Ball State, Rutgers, Eastern Michigan and Florida A&M filed lawsuits. The players are seeking damages for injuries they claim are the result of mishandled concussions they suffered while playing college football. A judge in a previous case ruled one large class-action concussion lawsuit could not be filed against the NCAA.

Hawkeyes discuss Minnesota

Sports

October 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes need a victory as they get set to visit Minnesota in the annual battle for Floyd of Rosedale. Losses in two of their last three games have dropped the Hawkeyes to 3-2 on the season. (click on the left side of the audio player bar to play each cut)

That’s senior receiver Riley McCarron, who had eight receptions in a 38-31 loss to Northwestern. The Hawkeye defense needs to make strides after giving up 362 yards, including 198 on the ground to the Wildcats.

That’s junior linebacker Ben Niemann. Senior corner Desmond King says the Gophers want to set up the pass with their ground game.

A key to the game will be Minnesota’s offensive line against Iowa’s defensive front.

McCaffery says new look Hawkeyes need experience

Sports

October 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery says he has a good feeling about this year’s team even though the Hawkeyes will have a new look. Four starters are gone from last year’s team that finished 22-11 and lost to eventual national champion Villanova in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. (click on the left side of the audio player bar to play each cut)

McCaffery says the Hawkeyes will make progress as they gain more experience.

The top returning player is senior guard Peter Jok, who averaged just over 16 points and shot 40 percent from three point range. McCaffery says Jok will need to diversify his game this season.

Freshman Tyler Cook is expected to make an immediate impact. McCaffery calls the 6-9 native of St. Louis a potential star.

The Hawkeyes open with an exhibition game against Regis University on November 4.

Manfred: Cards-Astros hacking decision during offseason

Sports

October 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball plans to have a decision during the offseason on possible discipline stemming from the investigation of a St. Louis Cardinals employee who hacked into a Houston Astros computer system.

Former St. Louis scouting director Christopher Correa was sentenced in July to 46 months in prison and ordered to pay $279,038 in restitution after pleading guilty to five counts of unauthorized access of a protected computer from 2013 to at least 2014. When he pleaded guilty in January, Correa had maintained he found proprietary Cardinals’ information in the Astros’ database.

Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. had blamed the hack on “roguish behavior” by a handful of individuals. “We are in the process of finishing up our investigation,” baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Wednesday. “I wish it had gotten a little more help a little sooner from the U.S. attorney’s office. But the cards come up how they come up, and we’re going to finish our investigation, and there will be a resolution of that during this offseason.”

Vets invited to away game tailgate at Kinnick

News, Sports

October 5th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa City’s Kinnick Stadium will be playing host to an “away game tailgate” event for veterans again this season. Gary Boseneiler, Director of Johnson County Veterans Affairs, says this marks the third year for the event. “The first year we had 300 veterans and family members attend and last year I had 500 sign in. I’m anticipating about the same this year,” Boseneiler says.

The event is scheduled for October 15 and will begin at 10:30 a.m., about 30 minutes before the kickoff between the Iowa Hawkeyes and Purdue Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Indiana. A light tailgating lunch is free (first-come, first-serve) to veterans and their family members who can watch the game on TVs at Kinnick Stadium. Boseneiler says, judging from the first two years, plenty of vets from outside the Iowa City area will attend. “Folks from all across the state and even a few who come across the border,” Boseneiler said.

The tailgate event takes place inside the press box at Kinnick. Parking is available on the west side of the stadium. “You can park for free right outside the stadium and student veteran volunteers will help escort people from the parking lot upstairs to the area where the food and TVs will be,” Boseneiler said.

As of right now, it’s unclear what channel the game will be on. The possibilities include ABC, ESPN2, or ESPN-U. Boseneiler warns, if the Iowa-Purdue game is televised by ESPN-U, that channel is NOT part of the cable package at Kinnick Stadium — so attendees would be able to watch the game.

Anyone who has questions or would like more information can contact Gary Boseneiler at 319-356-6049 or by email: gbosenei@co.johnson.ia.us
