Atlantic Boys roll to win at Denison

Sports

January 6th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Boys Basketball Team played a complete game from the onset on Friday night in a Hawkeye Ten road win over Denison-Schleswig 69-42.  Atlantic fed the ball to Scott Leonard on the block early and he took advantage racking up 13 first half points to help the Trojans build a 20 point halftime lead.

The Monarchs went on a small flurry to start the second half but could never cut the lead under double digits. Atlantic built the lead back over 20 by the end of the third on their way to the conference win.  The Trojans got 19 points from both Garrett Franken and Scott Leonard in the victory.  Atlantic is now 7-3 on the season and 4-1 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play.  They next travel to Glenwood on Tuesday night.

Denison falls to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the Hawkeye Ten. The Monarchs next host St. Albert on Tuesday.

Iowa Offensive Coordinator Greg Davis Retires

Sports

January 6th, 2017 by admin

(Radio Iowa) The University of Iowa announced today that Greg Davis is retiring after five years as the offensive coordinator of the Hawkeye football team.

Davis also served as the quarterbacks coach for Iowa. His retirement ends a 43-year career in the college football coaching ranks.

Davis joined the Iowa coaching staff replacing Ken O’Keefe after serving as offensive coordinator at the University of Texas for 13 seasons.

He was named Frank Broyles Assistant Coach of the Year in 2005 after Texas won the BCS national championship, and was a finalist for the award in 1999. Davis coached in 22 bowl games, including January bowl games (Outback twice, TaxSlayer and Rose) with the Hawkeyes the past four seasons.

“I cannot thank Greg Davis enough for what he has meant to Iowa football these past five seasons. Greg possesses a great football mind, and he brought a perspective and expertise to our program that made every one of our coaches and players better,” Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement released by the school. “Greg’s coaching career spanned five decades, from high school to the biggest stage in college football — and each day he exemplified passion for the game while instilling character in his players. That is ‘love for the game’ and without Greg, there’s a little less of that in football today. Greg will be the first to admit he owes so much of his coaching success to his wife, Patsy. They were a wonderful team in Iowa City and all of us with the Iowa football program wish them the very best.”

With Davis on staff, the Hawkeyes won 39 games over the past five seasons, including a combined 20 wins over the past two years. The Hawkeyes appeared in four January bowl games, including the 2016 Rose Bowl Game. The Hawkeyes won the Big Ten’s West Division in 2015 while posting a school-record 12 wins.

Davis also released a statement in his retirement announcement: “I have had a wonderful five years with the Hawkeye football program. I would like to thank coach Ferentz, the entire staff, our players, and Iowa fans everywhere,” said Davis.

“Patsy and I have enjoyed our time in Iowa, and not just the football part of it. The people of Iowa City and Hawkeye fans have been great. While we have our home in Dallas, there is no doubt we will be Hawkeye fans forever. This is my decision, but not a decision that was reached lightly. I remain passionate about the game of football, and enjoyed teaching football to our players every day. Patsy has been a trooper through all these years; we have learned and enjoyed every step along the way. It’s time for me to get closer to our family. I’m not sure the people of Iowa realize how special Kirk Ferentz is, and I am not talking about just the football part of the equation,” said Davis. “The men who leave this program are prepared for life, for careers, to be great husbands and fathers. Kirk is the total package for what anyone would want in a head coach.”

Prior to his stint at Texas, Davis was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at North Carolina (1996-97), where he helped develop the quarterback duo of Chris Keldorf and Oscar Davenport, who teamed to complete 60 percent of their passes for more than 2,700 yards each season. Davis was head coach at Tulane for four seasons (1988-91) after serving as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach there for three seasons.

Davis spent two seasons (1992-93) as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arkansas and two years (1994-95) as Georgia’s passing game coordinator, helping the Bulldogs to the 1995 Peach Bowl. Davis began his college coaching career at Texas A&M, serving as the Aggies’ quarterbacks coach (1978-84) before moving to Tulane. Davis began his career in the high school ranks while working toward a master’s degree. He coached at Barbe High School (Lake Charles, Louisiana) from 1973-74 and Port Neches-Groves High School (Port Neches, Texas) from 1975-77, where he helped the Indians to the 1975 Texas 4A state title. Davis is a native of Groves, Texas. He earned a bachelor’s degree (sports administration, 1973) and master’s degree (1977) from McNeese State.

Coach Ferentz will meet with the media on Monday in a news conference to wrap up the past season, which ended with the January 2nd loss to Florida 30-3 in the Outback Bowl.

Atlantic travels to Denison in Boys Hoops tonight on KJAN

Sports

January 6th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Boys Basketball team travels to Denison tonight to take on the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs and we’ll have coverage of the game on KJAN. The Trojans come in with a record of 6-3 overall and 3-1 in Hawkeye Ten play.  The Monarchs are 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.  The two teams come in to the game riding opposite streaks as the Trojans have lost their last three while the Monarchs have won 3 straight.

The Trojans have been working on a new defensive scheme and Coach Alan Jenkins said after a tough loss at Harlan that it’s going to take time for them to perfect that end  of the floor but they are going to work like crazy to improve each time out. The Trojans haven’t had trouble getting points on the offensive end but are working on their outside-inside scoring balance.  Garrett Franken leads the team with 24 points per game while Austin Alexander and Scott Leonard are both averaging nearly 14 points per game.

Denison-Schleswig has been up and down with their scoring through the season but are averaging 69 points per game in their last three wins. Chris Siemer leads the team with 16 points per game and Jake Farley has averaged 10 per contest.  Defense has also been inconsistent for the Monarchs but that also has improved in recent winning streak.

Join Chris Parks and Mike Smith for the broadcast tonight on KJAN with pregame at 7:20pm and Tip-Off at 7:30pm.  Catch the action on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, and on the KJAN Mobil App. You can also watch live video on KJANTV.

Nishna Valley Trails: Connector trail update

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

January 6th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Progress continues on the Nishna Valley Trails, Inc. (NVT) Troublesome Creek Connection Trail. Dave Chase, NVT President, says the trail projects are carried out in increments because of the costs involved, not to mention the engineering aspect of the entire project. Chase said donations help to make progress on the trail possible, including the recent funding from TS Bank in Atlantic, through their Community Support Program.

TS Banks provided a $7,500 donation, which will allow for the engineering and construction of a 150-yard section connecting existing trails. He said the Troublesome Creek Trail is basically done. The whole idea is to link up with the trail system at the Atlantic Municipal Utilities well head site. The TS Bank donation will allow for engineering and development of the trail along Olive Street that leads to the AMU trail, which will be hard-surfaced. When that’s completed, there will be a contiguous, 6-mile loop on the north side of Atlantic.

Chase says later this Spring, a kiosk will be set-up across the street from the KJAN Studios that will provide information about the area trails and their locations. So far, nearly two-miles of paved trail have been created to connect the two trails, including a 162-foot long pedestrian bridge that spans Troublesome Creek behind the KJAN Studios. The project began about 7-years ago, and is expected to be finished later this Fall.

If you’d like to contribute funds for the trails, send your checks to: Nishna Valley Trails, P.O. Box 496, Atlantic, IA 50022.  You can also contact Dave Chase (712-243-2444) if you’d like to donate or find out more about the trails project.

Iowa running back Akrum Wadley returning for senior season

Sports

January 6th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa running back Akrum Wadley is returning for his senior season. Wadley contemplated turning pro after a breakout junior year in which he emerged as Iowa’s most explosive offensive weapon. But the 190-pound Wadley decided that one more season in college – this time as the Hawkeyes’ go-to back- would be more beneficial than declaring for the NFL draft. Iowa finished 8-5, losing to Florida 30-3 on Monday in the Outback Bowl.

“I met with my parents and we laid out the pros and cons, and came to the decision that it would be best for me to stay at Iowa for my senior year. The main three reasons are to earn my degree, to have another year to prepare physically, and to not end my collegiate career on a bad note. We have some unfinished business.”

Wadley ran for 1,081 yards and 10 touchdowns and caught 36 passes with three TDs last year despite splitting carries with departing senior LeShun Daniels Jr.  Wadley will attempt to join Sedrick Shaw, Fred Russell and Ladell Betts as the only Hawkeyes to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season more than once, and if he stays healthy he’ll likely do so. Wadley will be Iowa’s returning back with significant experience.

“Akrum has displayed growth and maturity during his career, and had an outstanding season in 2016. We look forward to Akrum being a key member of our team in 2017,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said.

Tips for Iowans who’ve resolved to stay fit in 2017

News, Sports

January 6th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

We’re six days into the new year. Are you keeping your resolution to get fit? Thousands of Iowans work desk jobs and live sedentary lifestyles that aren’t doing enough to counteract the effects of obesity and heart disease. Doctor Jeremiah Gums, an internist at Boys Town National Research Hospital in Omaha, says if you stare at a computer screen all day, make a change at work, if possible.

“That’s always a great option, to request a standing work station,” Dr. Gums says, “but if you don’t have that option, just getting up every hour for a few minutes to move around, to go for a short walk, to use the restroom, to get a drink of water, anything really. Any sort of movement is beneficial.”

Almost one in every three Iowans is obese, according to the latest health rankings. He says the only way to prevent our health from taking a direct hit is to make a conscious effort each day to get some exercise. “Any kind of movement really helps,” Gums says. “When we just lay around on the couch especially, that really is more detrimental than what we would think to our overall health. Our bodies aren’t meant to be lying around. Any sort of activity every hour is good, but the more, the better.”

He suggests setting an alarm on your computer or smartphone every hour as a reminder to get up. “If you’re actually trying to lose weight, improve your BMI, we recommend getting 50 minutes of some sort of moderate-to-intense physical activity most days of the week,” Gums says. “I think 10 minutes of light activity every hour is good for people who have a busy lifestyle and have a hard time finding exercise elsewhere.”

He says it’s worth the extra effort as health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle include obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental health complications, muscle and bone degeneration and an overall higher rate of mortality.
