Iowa State blows past Illinois in Maui

Sports

November 20th, 2018 by admin

Talen Horton-Tucker had 26 points and 14 rebounds, Michael Jacobson added 23 points and Iowa State ran away from Illinois in the second half for an 84-68 victory Tuesday in the Maui Invitational.

Down to eight scholarship players due to injuries and suspensions, Iowa State (4-1) bounced back from an opening loss to No. 3 Gonzaga with a strong game at both ends.

The Cyclones used their pressure defense to keep it close in the first half, then went on an 18-2 run early in the second to build a nine-point lead. Iowa State kept boosting the lead from there, making 16 of 28 shots to earn a spot in Wednesday’s fifth-place game against San Diego State.

Trent Frazier had 15 points to lead Illinois (1-3), which will face Xavier in the seventh-place game.

Iowa State Football will now host Drake on December 1st

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State football team will play Drake on Dec. 1 at Jack Trice Stadium. Kickoff will be at 11 a.m.

When Iowa State’s season opener vs. South Dakota State was cancelled due to weather, Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard lined up Incarnate Word to be the replacement opponent.

The 24th-ranked Cardinals secured an at-large berth in the FCS playoffs Sunday afternoon. UIW will now focus on its playoff opportunities – beginning with a first-round game at Montana State Saturday – and not play the Cyclones as planned.

Pollard then arranged this week for Drake to play in Ames on Dec. 1.

“We’re most grateful to Drake Athletics Director Brian Hardin, Coach Rick Fox and the Bulldog leadership team for working with us through a very fluid situation,” Pollard said. “Coach (Matt) Campbell wants to play a 12th game and I believe our fans would welcome another chance to see this bowl-bound team play. I know the Bulldogs will enjoy the chance to play at Jack Trice Stadium and compete against a Power 5 opponent.”

Financial details for the replacement game will be announced later.

“There has certainly been a lot of moving parts related to rescheduling our cancelled season opener,” Pollard said. “Most importantly, I want to thank our fan base for its patience and understanding throughout this process.”

Tickets that were originally issued for the South Dakota State / Incarnate Word game will be honored for the Drake game.

Rams outlast Chiefs 54-51 in record Monday night showdown

Sports

November 20th, 2018 by admin

By GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Even before the fourth lead change of the fourth quarter, well before the 1,001st yard of combined offense was tallied, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Rams already knew this was a classic.

Two powerhouse NFL teams at the peak of their brilliance dueled deep into the night at an ecstatic Coliseum, racking up eye-popping numbers that stretched the box score and credulity.

There were 14 touchdowns, including three by defensive players. There were 56 first downs. There were 105 points, with 50 from each team — the first time that’s ever happened in an NFL game.

In the final moments, the Rams did just enough to leave with a win they’ll savor for years.

And if these teams meet again at the Super Bowl in 2 1/2 months, the Chiefs will remember the sting from coming up just short.

Jared Goff threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Gerald Everett for the go-ahead score with 1:49 to play, and the Rams outlasted the Chiefs for a 54-51 victory Monday night in a showdown that somehow surpassed the hype.

“It was a crazy game, crazy game,” said Goff, who passed for 413 yards and four touchdowns and even ran for another score . “It seemed like whoever had the ball at the end was going to win the game. There was times where we felt like we were going to put the knife in and finish them, and there were times where it was the other way around, where we had to claw back into it.”

Patrick Mahomes passed for a career-high 478 yards with six touchdown passes in his latest jaw-dropping effort for the Chiefs (9-2), but he also threw two interceptions in the final 1:18 as the Rams (10-1) claimed the highest-scoring Monday night game ever played.

The highest-scoring game in the league this season was an offensive fantasia of ingenious scheming from mastermind coaches Andy Reid and Sean McVay — along with 21 combined penalties to keep things interesting. The second half was an extended thriller featuring 59 combined points.

Both teams scratched out fourth-quarter leads, only to see them evaporate. Mahomes hit Tyreek Hill with a 73-yard TD pass just when the Rams appeared to be pulling away early in the fourth, and Goff replied with two late TD passes to Everett , a backup tight end with 31 career catches before this game.

“It was a whirlwind,” McVay said. “I feel like I might need a couple of beverages to relax tonight, but it was great. This is what you love so much about the game.”

And this game was ultimately decided by defense: Marcus Peters and Lamarcus Joyner came up with late interceptions as the Rams stopped Mahomes’ final efforts.

“It’s always fun to play against real good teams,” Mahomes said. “You get to go out there and have fun … (but) it’s the same as when we played New England. You can’t make mistakes against great teams. You need to limit your mistakes, but be aggressive.”

The Coliseum’s first Monday night game since 1985 was staged on short notice after the NFL moved the matchup from Mexico City to Los Angeles six days ago due to poor field conditions at Azteca Stadium. The Rams used the opportunity to give free tickets to thousands of first responders and families recovering from the dual tragedies of nearby wildfires and a mass shooting in Thousand Oaks.

Those fans got an incredible treat for their reward — and if the video-game-like spectacle they saw turns out to be a Super Bowl preview, Atlanta will get an All-Madden-level show as well.

“It was just cool,” said Todd Gurley, whose 13-game touchdown streak somehow ended in this offensive showcase. “It was a last-minute game and everybody (came) out in support. Had the families here, had the responders, so it was just a great overall crowd and it was good for the city.”

This game has loomed in capital letters on the NFL’s regular-season schedule ever since these teams confirmed their status as offensive powerhouses in September. The Rams and Chiefs are the league’s biggest favorites along with New Orleans and New England — the teams responsible for the only other losses by Los Angeles and Kansas City this season.

Mahomes had the most prolific passing game in the NFL this year, but he and Goff both made key mistakes.

Rams linebacker Samson Ebukam returned Mahomes’ fumble and a one-armed interception for the first two TDs of his NFL career, while Kansas City’s Allen Bailey returned Goff’s fumble for a go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

“It was electric,” Ebukam said. “It’s hard to describe, because I’m still like in a game mode right now. I haven’t calmed down yet, so it hasn’t really all sunk in yet.”

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jared Goff threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Gerald Everett for the go-ahead score with 1:49 to play, and the Los Angeles Rams outlasted the Kansas City Chiefs for a 54-51 victory in a high-octane NFL offensive showdown that somehow surpassed the hype. Patrick Mahomes threw six touchdown passes for the Chiefs, but he also threw two interceptions in the final 1:18 as the Rams won the highest-scoring Monday night game ever played and the first NFL game with two 50-point performances.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for the most yards in the NFL this season and had his second six-touchdown game. But it’s the five turnovers he committed that ended up leading the Chiefs to their second loss of the season. Mahomes threw three interceptions and had two fumbles in Monday night’s 54-51 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at the LA Memorial Coliseum.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — It has been more than a decade since anybody paid much attention to the Kansas football program this time of year. Les Miles has changed all that after his hiring Sunday. The national championship-winning coach has energized the Jayhawks’ fan base. His task now will be to build a program worthy of the enthusiasm. Kansas has just six wins the past three seasons.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Scott Frost’s first Nebraska team is in position to finish with one more win than the Mike Riley-led Cornhuskers had a year ago. That would be no small accomplishment for the Huskers. They were the last Power-Five conference team to win this season following a program-worst 0-6 start. To close on a 5-1 run, they must win Friday at Iowa. The Hawkeyes have outscored Nebraska 104-44 while winning the last three meetings.

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) — Ty-Shon Alexander hit four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points and Damien Jefferson scored 16 on 7-of-10 shooting to help Creighton beat Boise State 94-82 in the Cayman Islands Classic. The Bluejays will play Georgia State in the semifinals.

Plans approved for ISU sports performance center

News, Sports

November 19th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The Board of Regents gave approval Friday for Iowa State University to proceed with a 90-million dollar project that will dramatically change the north end of Jack Trick Stadium. Associate Athletic Director for Operations, Chris Jorgensen, says the Sports Performance Center will mean some big changes to the buildings that sit there now. But, he says one key feature he gets the most questions about is not going away.

)”Hillside seating that will remain…the plan would be to add a concourse similar to what we did on the south end of the stadium. A game day plaza would go in north of the Jacobsen Building replacing what currently resides there as the Olson building,” Jorgensen says. The plan also includes updates to the Bergstrom Football Complex to replace space lost in the Olsen building.

“The soccer, softball, tennis and golf programs all train out of that building when they are not in season at their other facilities. We also have some other sports that use the weight rooms and training facilities in that building, so that building would be removed,” Jorgensen says. The Sports Performance Center will be a four-story building attached to the football complex.

“The northeast corning of this building would be a shared nutrition center,” Jorgensen says. “One big change in college athletics in the last several years has been additional opportunities to feed student athletes. And it is actually one of the highest demands on out student athletes — is on the nutritional side.”

Other components of the building include conference rooms, the Life Skills Suite, offices and mechanical space. Level three would house a classroom, computer lab, 24 Tutor Rooms, and offices. And level four would have dining, the kitchen and two athletic suites. Levels three and four would provide views south to Jack Trice Stadium, east to the new North Entry Plaza and north to the Iowa State Center. Jorgensen says they are well on their way to raising the funds for the building.

“We have a 45-million-dollar fundraising goal, and as of today I think they are at 41 of that 45 million. And we plan at a later day,” according to Construction would start in June of next year and the project would take two years to complete.

UNI holds off Old Dominion at Paradise Jam

A.J. Green scored 15 points, including a key basket down the stretch, and Northern Iowa held off Old Dominion for a 54-53 victory Monday in a consolation game at the Paradise Jam tournament.

With the Panthers (3-2) ahead 29-21 with 19:33 left, the Monarchs (2-3) rallied to tie the game four times, the last at 50-all on Kalu Ezikpe’s layup with 2:15 left. But Green hit a jumper 22 seconds later to put Northern Iowa back in the lead for good

After Old Dominion turned the ball over on its next possession, Isaiah Brown made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining to give the Panthers some breathing room.

Ahmad Caver, who finished with a game-high 24 points for the Monarchs, hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.
