Iowa State hopes to build off upset win at Kansas

Sports

February 6th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State looks to build off a stunning victory at Kansas when the Cyclones return to Big-12 play Tuesday night, at Texas. At 6-4, the Cyclones are tied for third in the league race with West Virginia. Iowa State coach Steve Prohm credits experience for his team’s play on the road. The Cyclones are 3-2 away from home in conference play.

Prohm says while the win at Kansas helped their post season profile there are still plenty of challenges remaining. He says the Cyclones need to focus on building off that win. Texas is 3-7 in the Big-12. Tip-time at Frank Erwin Special Events Center in Austin, Texas, is at 8-p.m. The game will be televised on ESP2.

Frederickson Memorial Fund donates to Wrestling Program

News, Sports

February 6th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund has presented a check in the amount of $1,000 to Atlantic High School Athletics Director, Matt Alexander. The donation was to help pay for a spotlight to be used by the Atlantic/CAM wrestling program. The Trojans host district team duals tomorrow (Tuesday) night and will be using the spotlight during the event.

Fund spokesperson Melanie Petty says “We hope that the community will go out and support these wrestlers tomorrow night. This is quite an accomplishment and the boys have worked very hard to get to this point.”

The Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund raises all of it’s funds during their annual golf tournament. This years golf tournament will be held on Saturday, August 12th. Plans for the event have already started. The group is always looking for donations to their silent auction and volunteers to work throughout the day. If you’d like to help in any way, please contact Melanie Petty at 249-3696 for further information.

Bohannon’s 15, Cook’s 13 help Iowa top Nebraska 81-70

Sports

February 5th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jordan Bohannon scored 15 points, Tyler Cook added 13 and Iowa held on for an 81-70 win over Nebraska on Sunday. Brady Ellingson scored 11 points and hit a late 3-pointer to help the Hawkeyes (14-10, 6-5 Big Ten) secure their third straight win and avenge a double-overtime loss at Nebraska last month. Bohannon hit four 3-pointers and has a freshman school-record 54 on the season.

Peter Jok, the Big Ten’s leading scorer, scored 12 points in his return to the lineup after missing Iowa’s last two games with back issues. Jok played 30 minutes and shot 2 of 7 from the field. Jack McVeigh scored 16 points to lead Nebraska (10-13, 4-7), which outrebounded Iowa but made only 3 of 19 3-pointers. Tai Webster had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. The senior became the 28th player in Nebraska history to reach the 1,000-point mark.

Referee Tom Eades suffered an undisclosed injury with 12 minutes left in the second half and did not return. The rest of the game was officiated by two referees.
