Cook scores 18, No. 23 Iowa beats Western Carolina 78-60

Sports

December 19th, 2018 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa opened its final nonconference homestand by slogging its way to victory over a team that didn’t play like it came in with nine losses.

Tyler Cook scored 18 points, Luka Garza added 15 and No. 23 Iowa beat Western Carolina 78-60 on Tuesday for its third consecutive win.

Freshman Joe Wieskamp scored 10 points for the Hawkeyes (9-2), who forced 26 turnovers and led by as many as 27 points.

“I thought we fought,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. “We had to fight.”

Iowa knew that Western Carolina could give it a game after the Catamounts took Furman — the team a spot below the Hawkeyes in this week’s AP Top 25 — to double overtime.

Iowa mostly dashed Western Carolina’s hopes early, using a 28-10 first-half run to go ahead 48-29 — even though the Catamounts shot 65 percent from the field. The Hawkeyes slowly pulled further ahead in the second half, as Maishe Dailey’s layup helped push the lead to 65-38. But the undersized Catamounts kept fighting to make the final score look closer than the game really was.

“They didn’t have enough size to guard all of us,” Cook said.

Marc Gosselin had 17 points for the Catamounts (3-10), the first team in the Southern conference to hit the 10-loss mark.

Licenses on sale for Missouri and Big Sioux rivers paddlefish season

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

December 19th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Licenses are now on sale for the paddlefish season on the Missouri and Big Sioux rivers. The D-N-R fisheries expert for the area, Chris Larson says there are a couple of options for getting a license. You can purchase one tag now through December 31st. There are 950 resident or 50 non-resident licenses and if there are any left over you can purchase a second tag from January 1st through January 7th. A resident license sells for 25 dollars and 50 cents and a nonresident license is 49 dollars. You must also have a valid Iowa fishing license. Larson says there usually are enough licenses for everyone who wants one. “The first year we sold almost 800 of the thousand that are available — but the last couple of years we’ve sold right around 400. You should be able to get one — obviously there’s no guarantee — but we have not sold out since we started the season in 2015,” according to Larson.

Paddlefish are caught by snagging them as they swim on the bottom of the river. He says they’ve made some changes to try and get more people interested. One change involves the rules that required you to throw back any rough fish you snagged while trying to get a paddlefish. “Anglers were upset about that and they also wanted a longer season,” Larson says. “So, we open the season earlier, its going to open February second through the 30th of April, which is an earlier start than when we started the season five years ago. You can also snag rough fish and keep those as well. So if you want some common carp or Asian carp for table fare,” he explains.  It’s the second year for the adjustments that are aimed at bringing back those who tried paddlefishing and didn’t stay with it. He says hopefully the people who were upset about not keeping the rough fish will come back out.

Larson says you have to be specific in where you are looking for the paddlefish. He says the fish in the winter will be found in the slow-moving deep water and the only place you can find that is the holes behind the wing dikes where the fish overwinter. You a limited to catching one fish when you purchase a paddlefish tag. “You have to put the tag on the jaw — and as soon as you are out of tags you have to stop snagging. If you only have one tag and you snag a paddlefish and you are going to harvest it, you are done. You can also continue to snag the paddlefish and release them as well,” Larson says.

You can find out more about the paddlefish season by going to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources website at: www.iowadnr.gov.

Freshman forward David McCormack added a career-best 12 points off the bench for the Jayhawks, helping to soak up minutes while Udoka Azubuike is sidelined with a sprained ankle.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have signed outfielder Terrance Gore to a split contract for next season, giving them yet another speedster to join what could be baseball’s fastest roster next season. Gore, traded by the Royals to the Cubs for cash in August, will make $650,000 in the majors and $350,000 in the minors, and he could make a $100,000 in performance bonuses.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have placed guard Jordan Simmons on injured reserve after he suffered a knee injury last week against San Francisco. Simmons had played well in his three starts this season while filling in when D.J. Fluker was injured. Fluker’s status for Sunday’s game against Kansas City is in question due to a hamstring injury.

Reigning national champion Villanova fell out for the second time this season after two straight losses.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska and Akron announced an agreement Monday addressing the Sept. 1 season-opening game between the two that was canceled because of bad weather. Second quarter slump dooms Atlantic against Kuemper Catholic

Sports

December 17th, 2018 by admin

The Atlantic boys basketball team struggled to take care of the ball and make shots in the second quarter, allowing the Kuemper Catholic Knights to seize control of the game and grab a 60-48 victory on Monday night. The Knights turned a three point first quarter lead into a 14 point advantage by halftime. Blake Baumhover scored 11 of his 13 first half points in that second quarter. A number of those points came on transition layups off of steals. Atlantic Head Coach Jeff Ebling said the team wasn’t executing the press break in that second quarter.

The Knights were helped out by some strong outside shooting from Ben Brincks. He hit 5 threes on the night on his way to a team high 17 points. Baumhover finished with 16 and Kyle Berg chipped in 12 points for the Knights. Kuemper Catholic improves to 3-3 on the season and will finish the pre-holiday portion of their schedule with a trip to Harlan on Friday night.

Skyler Handlos dropped in 22 points to lead the Trojans, who played without leading scorer Chase Mullenix for the second game in a row. Logan Reilly finished with 13 points and Tyler Moen had a rough shooting night and came away with 6 points. Atlantic falls to 4-3 and will travel to Gilbert on Friday night for their last game before the holiday break.
