Garrett dazzles in debut, Reds beat Cardinals 2-0

Sports

April 8th, 2017 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Amir Garrett pitched two-hit ball for six innings to win his major league debut, a sharp start for the former St. John’s basketball player as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 Friday.

Garrett struck out four, walked two and needed only 78 pitches to record 18 outs. The 6-foot-5 lefty played two seasons of hoops for St. John’s while already a Reds minor leaguer.

Michael Lorenzen and Raisel Iglesias combined for three innings of hitless relief. Iglesias went two innings to earn his second save.

Joey Votto hit an RBI double off Mike Leake (0-1), who went eight innings. Scott Schebler homered in the ninth.

There were no strange plays at Busch Stadium, a day after a pitch that bounced got stuck to Cardinal catcher Yadier Molina’s chest protector.

Wichita State leaving MVC for AAC on July 1

Sports

April 7th, 2017 by admin

Wichita State has accepted an invitation to join the American Athletic Conference.

Conference spokesman Bill Potter says the presidents of the conference’s 12 member schools voted unanimously Friday to admit the school in all sports but football and the school accepted the invitation.

The school, which is currently a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, does not have a football program but it is a powerhouse in men’s basketball.

It will officially join the league on July 1.

The AAC currently has 12 members for football: UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, Navy, SMU, South Florida, Temple, Tulane and Tulsa. Navy is a football-only school, so the Shockers would give the conference 12 members in both football and basketball.

The school did not have an immediate comment. Messages also were left seeking comment from the Missouri Valley Conference.

Boys Golf

  • Atlantic 146, Creston 171 @ AGCC. Medalist: Ben Renaud, Atlantic, 33. Runner-Up: Jake Olsen, Atlantic, 36.

Notes from Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “It was our first sunny day but the wind was cold.  Nice to see our guys shoot well on the home course.  There were a few tough pin placements and a couple of holes that played pretty long.  Ben played really well.  He had 3 birdies on the day.  Jake Olsen had a tough hole 2 but finished with a birdie to help the score. Zac and Matt played well.  Good to see both of them finish in the 30s.  Nate and Cyle had some struggles but good to see them keep it in the mid to low 40s.  We have things to work on but they are playing pretty well now.”
