Cards’ Wainwright has HR, 4 RBIs in first win of season

Sports

April 22nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Adam Wainwright homered and drove in four runs while getting his first victory of the season, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 Friday night.

Wainwright ripped a two-run homer into the second deck in left field off Wily Peralta (3-1) to put the Cardinals up 2-1 in the third. He drove in two more runs with a single in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-1.

Wainwright (1-3) had struggled on the mound this season but showed better command against the Brewers. He gave up two runs and six hits in five innings, recording a season-high nine strikeouts without walking a batter.

Peralta has struggled against the Cardinals. He gave up nine hits and six runs in four innings, failing to strike out a batter for the first time in 20 starts dating to May 2016. Peralta is 0-8 in his last 10 starts against the Cardinals.

Iowa A.D. Gary Barta details damaged relationship with Meyer

News, Sports

April 21st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa athletic director Gary Barta says his relationship with a former top administrator deteriorated after he informed her that after a reorganization of the athletic department, she no longer would be his second-in-command.

Testifying Friday in a discrimination lawsuit filed by former administrator Jane Meyer, Barta said the two initially had a strong working relationship but that she became antagonistic after he told her in 2013 that he’d look for a new deputy director. Barta said he based his decision, in part, because he believed the head football and wrestling coaches wouldn’t support Meyer.

Meyer’s lawsuit alleges she suffered workplace discrimination as a gay woman in a relationship with a coach, that the school retaliated against her and that she was paid less than a male counterpart.

Iowa State adds Virginia transfer Shayok to men’s hoops team

Sports

April 21st, 2017 by admin

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s basketball team has added Virginia transfer Marial Shayok (mare-E-all SHAY-ock), head coach Steve Prohm announced today. Shayok, a 6-5 guard out of Ottawa, Ontario, will have one season of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2017-18 season per NCAA transfer rules.

Shayok made 14 starts and was Virginia’s second-leading scorer as a junior, averaging 8.9 points in 20.6 minutes. Defensively, he was also second on the team with 30 steals.

A 44.5 percent shooter from the field, Shayok tallied double figures in 14 games in 2016-17 as Virginia advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in his career. He scored a career-high 23 points on 8-for-14 shooting in a win against UNC Wilmington in the NCAA Tournament. Shayok shot 79.6 percent from the free-throw line last season

In his career, Shayok played in 103 games and made 23 starts for the Cavaliers, averaging 5.7 points and 2.0 rebounds.

Shayok played his high school ball at Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.). He represented Canada at the 2012 U17 World Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania.

Iowa State has three scholarships remaining for the 2017-18 season.

  • Atlantic 167, Clarinda 213. Medalist: Brooke Newell, Atlantic, 33. Runner-Up: Baylee Newell, Atlantic 41. Other Atlantic Scores: Alyssa Ginther 43, McKenna DenBeste 50, Sarah Fixmer 54, Mary Hayes 59.
Atlantic Head Coach Kathy Hobson: “Was good to see Brooke Newell play the type of golf we know she can play.  She has struggled a bit lately even though she was still playing good golf, just scoring a little higher than what she is capable of.

Baylee continues play well.  Really pleased with how she has improved on her scores lately.  Alyssa has been staying right at her average.

Our scoring came from a divided team tonight.  The top 3 playing positions played at their averages or 4-5 strokes below their averages.  The bottom 3 playing positions played 4, 6 and 9 strokes over their averages.  We need more consistency from that play to compensate for those times when the other golfers aren’t below averages.

Short putts continue to be our downfall for many of our golfers.  We will continue to work on them in practice but we have to practice well if you are going to play well.”

Atlantic Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “Another nice day to golf.  Cooler weather and a little breezy but the sun was out and the course was in good shape.  There were several tough pins today that were tucked to one side of green or the other.  Greens were fast too.  Much faster than we have seen.  Good test for us.  Great to see Jake shoot a one under on an away course.  He had one bogie and 2 birdies.  Ben had a nice round of two over.  He also had two birdies.  Good to see both Zac and Matt shoot well.  Good to see Cyle shoot below 40 and Nate be below 41.  This was a good win on an away course.”
