Chiefs waive DT Jaye Howard with failed physical designation

Sports

April 25th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs waived Jaye Howard with a failed physical designation Monday after the veteran defensive tackle was limited to eight games by a hip injury last season. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said last week Howard was progressing with rehab work following hip surgery.

The 28-year-old Howard started 13 of the 16 games he played in two years ago, racking up 36 tackles and 5½ sacks. He parlayed that into a $12 million, two-year contract prior to last season.

The Chiefs allowed defensive tackle Dontari Poe to leave in free agency, but they still have plenty of depth in the interior of the line. Along with Allen Bailey and Chris Jones returning, they also signed former Eagles defensive tackle Bennie Logan to a one-year deal.

Barta says 3 rounds of complaints led to Griesbaum’s firing

Sports

April 24th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa athletic director Gary Barta has testified that three rounds of complaints from parents and field hockey players prompted an investigation into the program that led to the firing of coach Tracey Griesbaum in 2014.

Griesbaum’s termination is a central piece of a lawsuit filed by former administrator Jane Meyer against the university and was a focus Monday in testimony in Meyer’s discrimination trial. Meyer, who was Barta’s longtime top assistant, filed the suit after being moved to another department soon after the firing of Griesbaum, who was her partner. Meyer’s job was eliminated in 2016.

Meyer alleges she suffered workplace discrimination as a gay woman in a relationship with a coach, that the school retaliated against her and that she was paid less than a male counterpart.

Other Atlantic Scores: Nate Gifford 82, Matt Gearheart 85.

Atlantic head coach Ed DenBeste: “Chilly start but the sun was out and the weather ended up being pretty nice out today.  Tough thing today was not getting warmed up.  No range to get a swing or two in.  I think that didn’t help us on a few holes.  Most had a rough hole or two.  Jake hit two out on 2 but still finishes with a 74.  Had 5 birdies today.  Ben was disappointed but a nice score of 74.  Zac got a little aggressive on a few holes on the back and it cost him a few strokes.  Good to see Cyle shot a nice round and keep it in the 70s.  Matt had a tough start with two OBs and was 5 over after first couple of holes.  Better start and he would have been around his average.  Nate had a nice round and would have been happy to take his 82.  Great win for us today against some good competition.”
