Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Derek Lilliquist and bullpen coach Blaise Ilsley will not return to the team’s coaching staff next season. John Mozeliak, the Cardinals president of baseball operations, says both coaches will not have their contracts renewed following a second straight year of missing the playoffs. It is the first time St. Louis has missed the postseason in back-to-back seasons since 2007-08.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals pitcher Danny Duffy underwent surgery to remove loose debris in his pitching elbow, and the left-hander is expected to resume his normal offseason training in about six weeks. The Royals said that Duffy should be ready for spring training in February.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs are the last unbeaten team in the NFL through the first four weeks of the season. A big reason has been their ability to dominate the second half. They did it again in a 29-20 victory over Washington, and have outscored their first four opponents 54-13 in the fourth quarter.

NEW YORK (AP) — The unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs are the unanimous No. 1 in the latest AP Pro32 poll. Kansas City received all 12 first-place votes for 384 points in balloting by media members who regularly cover the NFL. The Packers moved up two spots to No. 2. The Steelers jumped to No. 3.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — College basketball referee John Higgins has filed a civil lawsuit in federal court against a Kentucky media company after he and family members were harassed following an NCAA Tournament game he worked in March. The suit blames Kentucky Sports Radio for helping incite death threats and defamatory messages posted on social media that disrupted Higgins’ roofing business in Nebraska. The harassment came after Higgins worked Kentucky’s loss to North Carolina in a regional final.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa seems to have forgotten how to run the ball and it’s threatening a once-promising season. Iowa, which has been known for its physical, run-based attack under 19-year coach Kirk Ferentz, has seen its ground game bottom out over the last two weeks. The Hawkeyes have run for just 101 yards on 48 carries against Penn State and Michigan State, losing both ahead of a must-win on Saturday against Illinois.

Cardinals overhaul coaching staff after missing postseason

ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Derek Lilliquist and bullpen coach Blaise Ilsley will not return to the team’s coaching staff next season. John Mozeliak, the Cardinals president of baseball operations, says both coaches will not have their contracts renewed following a second straight year of missing the playoffs – the first time St. Louis has missed the postseason in back-to-back seasons since 2007-08.

Lilliquist had worked as the pitching coach since August of 2012, helping the Cardinals to four straight playoff berths and a National League-best team ERA of 2.94 in 2015. That rose to 4.08 in 2016 and was 4.01 this season as St. Louis’ pitching staff battled numerous injuries, including a season-ending elbow injury to top prospect Alex Reyes during spring training. Ilsley just finished his fifth season with St. Louis after 12 seasons coaching in the team’s minor league system.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker drilled a 43-yard field goal with 8 seconds left in his first career game, atoning for an earlier miss and helping Kansas City to a 29-20 victory over the Washington Redskins. The Chiefs are the only unbeaten team left in the NFL through Week 4, the first time there’s been only one left standing since 2010.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Redskins and Chiefs stood for a moment of silence before the national anthem, and flags flew at half-staff over Arrowhead Stadium, to honor victims of the Las Vegas shooting before Monday night’s game. The deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history Sunday night left at least 59 concertgoers dead and more than 500 injured.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The banged-up Chiefs offensive line lost right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif to a right knee injury on their second offensive play against Washington. Kansas City was already without starting center Mitch Morse and backup guard Parker Ehinger.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs left tackle Eric Fisher was active against the Redskins after he was questionable with a back injury that caused him to miss a pair of practices. The Redskins had listed six players as questionable and all were active, including running back Rob Kelley and tight end Jordan Reed.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals finished the season with a record of 83-79, three games worse than last year. They failed to make the postseason in back-to-back years for the first time since 2007-2008. Team officials say the cupboard isn’t bare and an overhaul is not needed. Rookie Luke Weaver went 7-2 and looks to be a prime candidate for the rotation in 2018. Carlos Martinez, Michael Wacha and Adam Wainwright are in the mix, while free agent Lance Lynn could be done.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals’ core of Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain are about to hit free agency now that their season is over. One or two of them could be brought back next season, but the finances of baseball means Kansas City is likely to begin a long rebuilding process with an influx of young players.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska faces back-to-back games against top-10 opponents in Wisconsin and Ohio State and then a tricky road game at Purdue. The three games could go a long way in determining how the season and coach Mike Riley are judged. Riley is 18-13 in three seasons at Nebraska. The Huskers have won two games after a stunning home loss to Northern Illinois and athletic director Shawn Eichorst was fired.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — No. 9 Wisconsin is turning up the pressure, and after swarming Northwestern for eight sacks, the Badgers have their sights set on Nebraska this weekend. The Badgers are averaging 4 sacks per game, tied for fourth nationally and second in the conference. Defensive end Alec James said more speed in the secondary has helped the defense across the aboard. Outside linebacker Garret Dooley led the way last week with three sacks.
