SAN DIEGO (AP) — Miles Mikolas won his fifth straight decision to begin the season and Tommy Pham homered, sending the St. Louis Cardinals past the San Diego Padres 2-1. Mikolas allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings against his former team, lowering his ERA to 2.51.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Adam Jones homered, scored three runs and had three RBIs, and the Baltimore Orioles outslugged the Kansas City Royals 11-6 to emerge with their second winning streak of the season. Manny Machado and Trey Mancini also went deep for the Orioles, who trailed 4-0 in the first inning and 6-3 in the second before rallying to beat the Royals for the second night in a row.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have put ace Carlos Martinez on the 10-day disabled list because of a strained lat. Martinez leads the National League with a 1.62 ERA. Right-handed reliever Mike Mayers was recalled from Triple-A Memphis.

High School Soccer Rankings 05/10/2018

The latest high school soccer rankings are out for the girls from the IGHSAU and for the boys from the IHSSCA.

In the girls rankings in Class 1A St. Albert checks in a number 10 again this week. Treynor jumped into the rankings at #11.  In Class 2A Lewis Central remains #1, Thomas Jefferson is up a spot to #8, Glenwood stays at #13.

In the boys rankings Abraham Lincoln is #16 in Class 3A. In Class 2A Harlan is #5. In Class 1A St. Albert is #10 and AHSTW is #16.

Atlantic girls golf comes in 3rd at Southeast Polk Tournament

The Atlantic girls golf team came in 3rd at the Southeast Polk Tournament on Thursday at Copper Creek Golf Course. The Trojans shot 368 and finished behind West Des Moines Valley (317) and Southeast Polk (362).

Alyssa Ginther finished in 3rd place with a 77 on the par 71 course. Baylee Newell was 4th with an 81. Hannah Alff and Anna Wieser both shot 105 for the Trojans. West Des Moines Valley’s Jenna Krogulski was Medalist with a 73 and her teammate Paige Hoffman was Runner-Up with a 74.

Boys Soccer Substate pairing released

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has released boys substate soccer pairings for 2018. First round games are set to be played on Monday, May 21st with Semifinals on May23rd and Finals on May 26th. The State Soccer Tournament is scheduled for May 31st, June 1st, June 2nd at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.

In Class 1A Atlantic will play in Substate 7 in the late game of a doubleheader at West Central Valley at 7:00pm on May 21st. AHSTW plays Panorama in the first game at 5:00pm. At Des Moines Christian there will be a doubleheader as well with Creston playing Clarke at 5:00pm, followed by Nodaway Valley vs. Des Moines Christian at 7:00pm.

In Substate 8 first round games are: Clarinda Academy at St. Albert 5:00pm, Tri-Center vs. Logan-Magnolia @ Treynor 5:00pm, Missouri Valley at Treynor 7:00pm, Underwood at Riverside 5:00pm.

State qualifying track meets are on tap tonight around the state. One of the host sites in Class 3A is in Atlantic. Follow the links below to check out all of the host sites and team assignments in each class.

All meets are set to start at 4:30pm with the following schedule of events:

In class 4A, top two place winners in each event, plus the next twelve (12) best performances statewide from qualifying meet place winners (1st-8th place) will advance to the state meet.

Class 3A and 2A, the top two place winners in each event, plus the nest eight (8) performances statewide from qualifying meet place winners (1st-8th place) will advance to the state meet.

In Class 1A, the top place winner in each event, plus the next fourteen (14) best performances statewide from qualifying meet place winners (1st-8th place) will advance to the state meet.

If there are ties, the highest qualifying meet place winner will be the qualifier. If the tie still remains, the school name, as printed in the IHSAA Directory, will be used as the tie breaker. The last school name alphabetically will become the qualifier. There will be no more than 24 qualifiers in any event.
