The Atlantic softball team came out of a whirlwind week on top of the Hawkeye Ten Conference. The Trojans are Conference Champions for the first time since 1999.

The Trojans began the week with an 8-2 win over Harlan in a game that was moved to an 11:00am start to avoid incoming rain. They followed that with a 4-2 win over Lewis Central on Tuesday night. They then took two from Creston on Thursday night 4-0 and 10-0. That was followed by a busy Friday, traveling to Carroll to beat Kuemper 7-0 in the morning. They then hustled back home to take two games from St. Albert 12-0 and 11-1 to secure the Conference Title.

The Trojans finished the regular season with a 19-1 conference record. The next two teams in the standings were Denison-Schleswig at 17-3 and Lewis Central at 15-3.

Atlantic showed no signs of slowing down by picking up a 16-2 win over CB Thomas Jefferson on Saturday at the Tiger-Knight Tournament in Carroll before the rest of the tourney was rained out. The Trojans finish the regular season with a 27-5 record.

Their opening round playoff game will be on Tuesday night at home against Shenandoah. We’ll have coverage of that game on KJAN with a pregame at 6:45pm and first pitch set for 7:00pm.

Police charge Iowa wrestler with lying about shooting

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa wrestler Sam Stoll has been charged with making a false police report for lying to them after being shot in the knee. Stoll first told Iowa City police he shot himself while in his garage on June 19. After police ruled out that possibility, Stoll admitted he was shot while playing a prank on a friend at the friend’s home. Stoll told officers that he lied in hopes of keeping his friend out of trouble.

Stoll, who had surgery and was released from the hospital the following day, placed fifth as a heavyweight at the NCAA Championships in March. He has one remaining season of eligibility. “As I shared previously, Sam Stoll’s health was our number one concern and he is doing well,” coach Tom Brands said Friday. “I am disappointed in his actions related to this incident, as they do not reflect our values.”

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (AP) — A Minnesota-based company says it’s considering moving production of some motorcycles out of the country because of European tariffs, just days after Harley-Davidson announced a similar move. A spokeswoman for Polaris Industries acknowledged Friday the company could move some production of its Indian brand of motorcycles from northwest Iowa to Poland.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Federal prosecutors in Iowa have charged a Brazilian man accused of causing a flight from Calgary, Canada, to Chicago to be diverted to Cedar Rapids. Prosecutors said Friday that 33-year-old Guilherme Alves De Melo was charged Tuesday with one count of intimidating a flight crew member. A complaint says that on June 23, Alves became disruptive and “lost it” about an hour before the plane was scheduled to land, causing the plane to land at the eastern Iowa airport.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A national abortion-rights organization says the Iowa Supreme Court acted “absolutely appropriately” in striking down a 72-hour waiting period for women seeking abortions. Ilyse Hogue is president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. She says Friday’s ruling upholds precedent, the rights of Iowa women and their “dignity and respect.” She also says Sen. Charles Grassley should consider those issues when advancing any U.S. Supreme Court nominees. The Iowa senator leads the Senate Judiciary Committee.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Despite acknowledging a county prosecutor’s behavior was “egregious,” the Iowa Supreme Court ordered the reinstatement of the attorney, saying his actions didn’t reach the threshold to remove an elected official. The court ruled Friday that Abraham Watkins was wrongly removed as Van Buren County attorney in 2017 following allegations of sexual harassment. He was accused of commenting on an employee’s breasts, appearing in underwear in his home office and displaying nude photos of his wife.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Julio Teheran pitched six scoreless innings and Johan Camargo had a two-run double among his three hits to help the Atlanta Braves beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1. Teheran allowed two hits, struck out four and walked two. He walked the first two batters of the game and then retired 15 of the next 16. Dan Winkler picked up his first major league save by retiring the only two batters he faced as Atlanta won for only the fourth time in 13 games in St. Louis since the start of the 2016 season.

SEATTLE (AP) — Marco Gonzales pitched a six-hitter for his first career complete game, Mitch Haniger and Mike Zunino homered, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1. Gonzales struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk while throwing just 96 pitches.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa City police have charged Hawkeyes wrestler Sam Stoll with making a false report to police after they say he lied to them after being shot in the knee. Authorities say Stoll first told them he shot himself while he was in his garage on June 19 but admitted it happened while playing a prank on a friend. Stoll has had surgery and been released from a hospital. He has one more season of eligibility.

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Brett Moffitt won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Chicagoland Speedway after leader John Hunter Nemechek ran out of gas on the final lap. Moffitt won for the third time this season and fourth time overall.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Atlanta Braves catcher Tyler Flowers was removed from the game at St. Louis after flying out to end the sixth inning. Flowers, who came in hitting .248, appeared to hurt his right knee on a swing earlier in the at-bat. He walked off the field on his own, but with a noticeable limp.
