(Radio Iowa) — Most high school football and cross country teams started practices this week and coaches are being reminded to make sure their athletes are drinking plenty of water. James Lang, an Iowa State University assistant professor of kinesiology, says having a “hydration strategy” is critical to keeping kids safe. He says that strategy should include liquids 2 to 3 hours BEFORE practice. “That could be a 16-ounce glass of water and then, during a practice session, having a strategy to be drinking maybe every 15 to 20 minutes during the practice,” Lang says.

Lang advises coaches to be proactive about hydration, rather than reactive. “The best index for them is going to be body weight. That’s something a coach can easily incorporate with an athlete,” Lang says. “Weigh yourself before practice and weigh yourself after – and essentially, try and drink back that weight lost. So, for every pound lost, that would be about 16 ounces of fluid.” In addition to plenty of water, Lang suggests coaches give athletes time to acclimate to the heat by scheduling practices in the early morning or evening and – for football players – limiting pad use in the first week. Lang says the warning signs of dehydration can be subtle, but generally include a dull headache, dizziness or nausea. “That can progress to vomiting, more severe headaches, and at that point you’re starting to get into heat exhaustion, but also borderline heat stroke,” Lang says.

According to Lang, coaches should REQUIRE athletes to take water breaks, rather than simply making water available.

Montgomery (4-4), who the Royals drafted in the first round in 2008, picked up his first win since June 29. Montgomery is 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA in four appearances against the Royals.

MIAMI (AP) — Streaking Matt Carpenter hit his 30th home run, a tiebreaking drive in the eighth inning that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals over the Miami Marlins 3-2. Carpenter connected for the fourth time in five games and increased his career high for home runs. He also extended his streak of reaching base safely to 26 games, the longest active string in the majors.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Tiger Woods at times looks similar to the guy who won the PGA Championship four times among his 14 major titles, except for the results. And except for the way he began the week of the final major of the year. He took an ice bath. Woods says at 42 and having gone through four back surgeries, he has to manage his game. His results in the majors have been inconsistent

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Heavy storms that rolled through Missouri helped with the oppressive heat, but the rain also sent the humidity soaring at the PGA Championship. That was bad news for Dustin Johnson, who forgot to pack shorts for one of the few events at which PGA Tour players are allowed to wear them for practice rounds. That shouldn’t be as much trouble next year, when the PGA moves to May and will be played at Bethpage on New York’s Long Island.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Davis Love III will join a select club when he plays in his 100th major championship this weekend. There are only 14 others who have played in that many majors, a list that is topped by Jack Nicklaus with 164 starts. The 54-year-old Love’s first was the 1986 PGA Championship at Inverness, so it’s a nice coincidence he’s reaching triple digits at the PGA Championship this weekend at Bellerive.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jordan Spieth will take a second stab at winning the career Grand Slam when the PGA Championship begins Thursday at Bellerive in St. Louis. Spieth has struggled much of the season. But he was in contention at the British Open last month and thinks he has a chance to win the only major championship missing from his resume.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Francesco Molinari made his major championship debut 12 years ago at the Masters alongside Tiger Woods and didn’t make it to the weekend. That wasn’t devastating. All he was doing was caddying for brother Edoardo. A dozen years later, Molinari was again with Woods at a major, this time beating him to win the British Open. He now looks to build on his remarkable summer at the PGA Championship, the final major of the year.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Big 12 coaches and football junkies know all about Iowa State junior running back David Montgomery. Montgomery is poised to make his presence felt throughout the rest of the country this fall.

Montgomery racked up 1,146 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns in 2017. But those numbers fail to fully show how impressive he was in just his second season at the position. Montgomery also forced a national-best 109 missed tackles — a stat compiled by website Pro Football Focus — while running behind a line that was average on its best days.

Montgomery will be the focal point of both Iowa State’s offense and opposing defenses this season, which starts on Sept. 1 against South Dakota State of the FCS.
But Montgomery instead deferred to a talented supporting cast during Tuesday’s media day, cracking a few jokes in an effort to deflect attention.

Montgomery converted from quarterback to running back when he arrived on campus in 2016. After earning first-team All-Big 12 honors at his new position, it’s safe to say that Montgomery won’t be called upon as a placeholder. Montgomery scored twice in last year’s opening-night win over Northern Iowa and added 112 yards in a loss to rival Iowa. Montgomery bowled over Hawkeyes All-American linebacker Josey Jewell for a touchdown in that one, essentially sealing his status as the team’s starter.

Iowa State, which went 8-5 in 2017, then rallied to stun then-No. 3 Oklahoma 38-31, and Montgomery flashed his versatility in that early October upset by catching seven passes for 89 yards. Montgomery later ran for at least 100 yards in three straight games, highlighted by a three-TD performance against Oklahoma State. Montgomery finished the year with 36 receptions, and those missed tackles were the most since Pro Football Focus started tracking that stat in 2014.

Montgomery said he doesn’t have any statistical goals in mind for 2018. But he should be in position to surpass last year’s numbers with four starters back along the offensive line, a unit led by juniors Julian Good-Jones and Bryce Meeker. Though Campbell isn’t convinced that the line has arrived, so to speak, Iowa State is hoping that all that returning experience should mean that Montgomery won’t have to work so hard to avoid oncoming defenders.

The 2018 Atlantic Open Golf Tournament was held on Saturday, August 4th and Sunday, August 5th. 65 players participated in the tournament with the championship group playing 18 holes Saturday at Nishna Hills Golf Club and 27 holes on Sunday at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club. Other flights played 18 holes both days.

The Championship Flight was won by Andrew Martin who shot a total 1-under 172 for the tournament. This is the 6th time Martin has won the Atlantic Open. The rest of the top 5 was: 2nd-Brad Huyck, 174. 3rd-Zach Christianson, 175. 4th-Evan Schuler, 178. 5th-Jason Reynolds, 178.

(IHSAA) The Iowa High School Athletic Association and its title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau, are proud to have secured the HeadStrong Concussion Insurance program for the 2018-19 school year.

HeadStrong provides “first-dollar” insurance coverage for all students (males and females) in grades 9-12 participating in the practice or play of interscholastic sports sanctioned by the IHSAA. These include: baseball, basketball, bowling, cheerleading (non-competition), cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, and wrestling.

The Iowa Farm Bureau is sponsoring the premium expense for every IHSAA participant in the program. Coverage will run from August 1, 2018 to August 1, 2019. The insurance carrier for this policy is Nationwide Life Insurance Company, with K&K Insurance serving as a third-party administrator.

“The IHSAA and the Iowa Farm Bureau believe providing this insurance puts Iowa at the forefront of providing quality care for student-athletes who sustain a concussion in one of our sanctioned sports,” said Alan Beste, executive director of the IHSAA.

“We hope this insurance removes the financial barrier students and their parents or guardians may have when it comes to seeking care for a concussion.”

HeadStrong was developed to insure student-athletes from the high cost of concussion treatment and potential neurological follow-up. It provides student-athletes with $0 deductible and $0 co-pay coverage for concussion assessment and treatment and serves as a secondary or excess policy to other primary and collectable insurance. It will become the primary payor if no other insurance is available.

The IHSAA is now one of seven state high school athletic associations providing coverage for 100 percent of participants, joining Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. More information and guides to the program are available through the links below.

After Wei-Yin Chen pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-hit ball, Miami led 2-0 going into the ninth and handed the game off to Barraclough. Barraclough loaded the bases and walked in a run before Guerra got Molina to end it.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Javier Baez went deep, Cole Hamels pitched six strong innings and the Chicago Cubs beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1. Baez hit the first pitch from reliever Kevin McCarthy in the sixth inning to center for his 25th home run, putting the Cubs ahead 2-1. Baez doubled in the eighth to score Jason Heyward, upping his RBI total to an NL-leading 88. Hamels is 2-0 since the Cubs acquired him in a July 27 trade with the Texas Rangers. He allowed one run and seven hits.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Erik Chinander turned around a bad defense his first year at Central Florida. He’s confident he can do the same as Nebraska’s new defensive coordinator. The Cornhuskers allowed 54 or more points in four of their last six games and ranked in the 100s nationally in three of the four major defensive categories. Chinander is heartened by the Huskers’ desire to make amends for their shoddy performances in 2017.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The PGA Championship finally found its identity. It’s the one major where players are allowed to practice in shorts. They might not need to next year. The suffocating heat Monday at Bellerive was a welcome reminder that the PGA Championship is moving to May.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs made out pretty well when they drafted Tyreek Hill out of West Alabama in the later rounds of the NFL draft. The speedster has become one of the NFL’s most dynamic players. Now, they’re hopeful another late-round gamble, this time on swift cornerback Tremon Smith out of Central Arkansas, will pay off in a similarly splendid way.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Golf fans are not seeing double this week at the PGA Championship. Indeed, there are two Zach Johnsons roaming Bellerive. One is the two-time major winner from Iowa, the other is a PGA pro from Utah who played his way into the year’s final major.

The Alliance of American Football has signed its first 100 players for the new spring league.

The AAF begins a 10-game regular season with eight teams in February. The first batch of players to sign the league’s standard three-year deal worth $250,000 was announced Monday . The players are allocated based on where they played in college or professionally. Players without geographic ties to an AAF team are allowed to sign with any team.

Players who receive NFL contracts will be allowed to break deals with the AAF, which was founded by TV and film producer Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian.

Three former Iowa State players signed with Alliance teams. Center Oni Omoile signed with Memphis, Wide Receiver Dondre Daley signed with Orlando, and Safety Kamari Cotton-Moya signed with Phoenix. Former Nebraska Defensive Back Kieron Williams also signed with Phoenix.
