Griswold travels to East Mills tonight on KJAN

Sports

September 7th, 2018 by admin

The Griswold Tigers (0-2) will travel to face the East Mills Wolverines (2-0) in 8-man football tonight and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. Griswold has been working to get a young team to improve while making the transition to 8-player football this year. East Mills is off to an undefeated start after a big opening win against East Union and a shootout victory in week two over Lamoni. Wolverines Co-Head Coach Kevin Schafer said it’s been two very different performances for his squad to start the season.

Coach Schafer’s son Michael is the quarterback for the Wolverines and he has been pretty efficient so far this season with 559 yards through the air with 9 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Schafer has a wealth of weapons to throw to with Nic Duysen, Anthony Rainey, and Riley Story all capable of having big games. Coach Schafer said the Wolverines like to throw the ball but know they have to be more balanced.

Griswold Head Coach Andy Everett said the transition from 11-player to 8-player from his team has been fun.

The Tigers like to run the ball and the have three backs with over 100 yards rushing on the season. Brendan Atkinson leads the team with 201 yards on the ground and one score. With so many young players getting up to speed the start of the season has been tough for Griswold but Coach Everett likes his team’s work ethic thus far.

We’ll have coverage of the Tigers and Wolverines tonight on KJAN. Our Dvorak Tire and Service pregame show starts at 6:30pm with kickoff set for 7:00pm in Malvern. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at kjan.com, on the web app, or you can watch the live video stream of the game on our KJAN facebook page. The night will start with our weekly pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm and stay tuned after the game for all the scores from the state on the Iowa High School Scoreboard Show from 10:00pm-11:30pm.

Atlantic looks to bounce back against Clarinda

Sports

September 7th, 2018 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans (1-1) will play host to the Clarinda Cardinals tonight in a football battle of Hawkeye Ten foes. The Trojans will be looking to bounce back from a week 2 loss to the Creston Panthers 43-20. Atlantic had a tough time keeping up at the line of scrimmage against the Panthers and Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott knows they will need to do a better job there this week against a Cardinals team that wants to run the ball in the middle.

The Trojans also turned the ball over three times last week and Coach McDermott said protecting the ball is number one on the team’s list of goals this week.

Clarinda has had a tough start to the season losing two running backs for the season in as many weeks. Kam Fulk was injured in the week one win over Shenandoah and Connor Brown was injured in the week two loss to Red Oak. Despite losing those two backs the Cardinals still have a powerful one to deal with in William Shull. He has racked up 215 yards on 32 carries and scored 3 touchdowns to lead the Cardinals this season.

On the other side of the ball the Trojans will try to spread the Cardinals out and keep them off balance. Quarterback Chase Mullenix has been a great dual threat for the Trojans racking up 216 rushing yards and two scores while throwing for 234 yards and 2 more touchdowns.

The Trojans and Cardinals will meet tonight at the Trojan Bowl with a 7:00pm kickoff. The freshman contest is going to be played at the High School field at 4:15pm due to the wet conditions. Attendees to the freshman game will be able to get into the varsity game at the Trojan Bowl without paying admission again.

Catch the full interview with Coach McDermott this afternoon at 4:45pm on Trojan Preview on KJAN.

New book looks at life of Nile Kinnick

Sports

September 7th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — A new book chronicles the short life and hundreds of quotes from the University of Iowa’s most famous football player whose 16-foot-tall statue stands in front of the stadium named in his honor. This summer marks the 100th anniversary of Nile Kinnick’s birth and author Mark Wilson of Iowa City spent a full decade compiling the quotes from Kinnick’s letters, diaries, journals, essays and speeches. “My whole goal was to preserve his legacy,” Wilson says. “There’s new generations coming on every single year, new freshmen. I’ve met little children coming in for the first time. Dad or Mom might say, ‘Well, we’re here at Kinnick Stadium,’ and they’re obviously going to ask, ‘Who was Kinnick?'”

Wilson’s book is called, “The Way of Nile C. Kinnick, Jr.: Insights, Images, and Stories of Iowa’s 1939 Heisman Trophy Winner.” There are a total of 366 Kinnick quotes in the book, one for every day of a leap year, along with dozens of photos and stories. Wilson says Kinnick has been a personal inspiration in his own life and he hopes the book inspires others — as he finds the quotes are still useful decades later. “They are covering about every topic you can think of: government, war, poverty, race, religion,” Wilson says, “some of the things he thought about, his faith, education, football.”

Kinnick was an honors student and a superior athlete, Wilson says. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound Adel native broke 14 Iowa records his senior year. The quotes draw both from Kinnick’s time as a student and while he was in the military. Navy Ensign Kinnick died at age 24 during World War Two when his fighter plane crashed during a training flight in 1943. Kinnick’s grandfather was George Washington Clarke, who served two terms as Iowa’s governor. Many of Kinnick’s family members were involved in politics and Wilson is convinced had Kinnick lived, he would have eventually run for president. Wilson, a first-time author, is a retired Iowa City teacher and is an ambassador for the U-I Athletics Hall of Fame.

“All of my royalties on every book sold will go back to the six Nile Kinnick scholarships,” Wilson says. “There’s one for leadership, four that are memorial scholarships, and one for women. It’s my giveback. I was an elementary teacher and didn’t have a lot of money to give but I can sure give back the royalties from this book.” The book is being printed by Ice Cube Press, based in North Liberty. It’s available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, the Hawkeye shops, and at icecubepress.com.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

CARSON, Calif. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs travel to Los Angeles to face the Chargers in a Week 1 matchup between AFC West favorites. The Chiefs have won the AFC West the past two seasons but now have unproven Patrick Mahomes taking over at quarterback. The Chargers closed out last season by winning nine of their final 12 games but missed the playoffs because of an 0-4 start.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes won’t be making his first career start when the Kansas City Chiefs visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. That came in Week 17 last season. But in many ways it will be the start of the Mahomes era, one that has been eagerly anticipated in Kansas City.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska faces former foe Colorado in its opener. The Cornhuskers were supposed to open against Akron last week but the game was called off because of bad weather. Colorado comes to Lincoln off a big win over Colorado State. The Buffaloes say they’re excited about renewing their rivalry with Nebraska. Former CU coach Bill McCartney showed up at the team’s weekly news conference and expressed his disdain for all things red. The two teams battled for years in the Big Eight and Big 12.

UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy considers starting quarterback Taylor Cornelius something a dinosaur. Cornelius is 22 and one of the older quarterbacks in the Big 12. He waited and is finally the starter as a fifth-year senior. Four of the starting quarterbacks in the Big 12 in Week One started their college careers at other Power Five schools: West Virginia’s Will Grier, Iowa State’s Kyle Kempt, Kansas senior Peyton Bender and Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State sophomore basketball player Cameron Lard is opening up about some of his offseason trouble. Lard left the program for a stint in a wellness center over the summer. He says he was living a “double life” last season and has grown close with Chris Herren, a former basketball player who struggled with substance abuse issues. Lard says he has found a strong support group and he can’t “mess up” again.
