Dunne’s 5 TDs lead Northern Iowa past South Dakota, 42-28

Sports

October 13th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Eli Dunne threw for 257 yards and four touchdowns, ran for a fifth and piloted Northern Iowa to a 42-28 Missouri Valley Conference victory over South Dakota on Saturday night.

The Coyotes took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and held a 13-7 advantage after Austin Simmons hit Kai Henry with a touchdown pass from 3 yards out. Dunne answered with two touchdowns in the final minute of the first half, hitting Marcus Weymiller with a 9-yard strike to take the lead, 14-13, and after South Dakota (3-3, 2-1) fumbled the ensuing kickoff Dunne scored from the 1 with :18 left.

Brandon Thull scored from the 2 and Simmons connected for a two-point conversion to tie the game at 21-21, but the Panthers (3-3, 2-1) scored three touchdowns in under five minutes to put the game out of reach.

Dunne fired 21 yards to Briley Moore, then hit Nick Fossey from the 25 for a score, and when South Dakota fumbled the ensuing kickoff Brawntae Wells pounced on it in the end zone for a touchdown that made it 42-21.

Iowa State throttles No. 6 West Virginia 30-14

Sports

October 13th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Brock Purdy threw for 254 yards and three TDs and Iowa State throttled sixth-ranked West Virginia 30-14 on Saturday night, handing the Mountaineers their first loss in emphatic fashion. David Montgomery had a career-high 189 yards rushing for the Cyclones (3-3, 2-2 Big 12), who capped a wild day by beating a Top 25 team for the fifth time in seven tries.
West Virginia (5-1, 3-1) was the fourth Top 10 team to fall Saturday. LSU pounded No. 2 Georgia 36-16, No. 7 Washington fell 30-27 in overtime at No. 17 Oregon, and No. 8 Penn State lost to Michigan State 21-17.

Iowa State scored 20 straight points after spotting West Virginia an early touchdown off a turnover. Purdy then found Deshaunte Jones through a pair of defenders on a sprawling 32-yard TD grab that, after a two-point conversion, put Iowa State ahead 28-14 with 12:17 to go.

The story of the game was Iowa State’s defense, which dominated the high-flying Mountaineers on a windy and chilly night. West Virginia gained just 152 yards, 420 below its season average. Fittingly, the Cyclones sealed the win by forcing a hold in the end zone for a team safety and a 30-14 edge with 5:14 left. Will Grier had arguably his worst game as a Mountaineer, throwing for just 100 yards. West Virginia was outgained by 346 yards, a stunning figure for a team that hadn’t even trailed in rolling up five straight wins.

The Cyclones have held all six of their opponents below their season average, which has been instrumental the team’s bounce back from a 1-3 start. Can Iowa State grab the second spot in the Big 12 title game? Probably not — but the schedule will ease up considerably and these Cyclones seem capable of going on a run.
UP NEXT: Iowa State is off next week.

Stetson shocks Drake 23-21 with last-play touchdown

Sports

October 13th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Steven Burdette scooped up teammate Jack Bowen’s lateral and scooted eight yards into the end zone as time ran out to lift Stetson to a stunning 23-21 win over Drake on Saturday.

The Hatters (4-1, 2-1 Pioneer League) had a first-and-10 at the Drake 15 with nine seconds to play. Colin McGovern was forced to scramble before he found Bowen at the 10. Bowen was gang-tackled at the eight as time ran out but the ball squirted out and Burdette snapped it up, racing untouched into the end zone while the Bulldogs celebrated.

The Bulldogs (3-2, 2-1) pulled off a stunner of their own less than a minute earlier. Getting the ball back on their 24 with 57 seconds left, Grant Kraemer found Devin Cates wide open over the middle and he raced untouched for a 76-yard touchdown on the next play.

That left too much time for McGovern, who had the ball on his 35 with 39 seconds to go. He had three straight completions, with Bowen covering 13 and Burdette 17. McGovern finished 29 of 44 for 271 yards. Burdette had an earlier touchdown and Donald Parham had 12 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. Kraemer went 19 of 36 for 277 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

Stanley propels Iowa to 42-16 victory over Indiana

Sports

October 13th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Nate Stanley threw for 320 yards and a season-high six touchdowns, and the Iowa Hawkeyes beat the Indiana Hoosiers 42-16 in Big Ten action on Saturday. Stanley connected with nine different wide receivers, completing 21 of 33 throws in a game where he was only sacked once.

Indiana’s opening drive looked promising, as the Hoosiers took the ball deep into Hawkeye territory, but the Iowa defense doubled down in the red zone and held the Hoosiers to a field goal, setting the tone for what would become an abysmal day on offense for Indiana. On the ensuing drive, Stanley threw an interception, but a pass interference call negated the turnover, setting up a 9-yard touchdown pass to TJ Hockenson.

Stanley relied on his tight ends heavily, connecting with Noah Fant and Hockenson for eight of his 21 completions. The two tight ends accounted for 208 of Stanley’s 320 passing yards, with Fant finishing the game with 101 yards and Hockenson totaling 107 yards.

Indiana was trailing 14-3 when Stanley made his only mistake of the day, an errant pass right in the direction of Hoosiers defender Thomas Allen, who set Indiana up in Iowa territory following his interception. On the next play of the game, Indiana quarterback Peyton Ramsey found Ty Fryfogle in the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown that made it a 14-10 Iowa lead. Ramsey finished with one touchdown and two interceptions, completing 31 of 42 pass attempts for 263 yards.

But Iowa’s offense was too much for the Hoosiers thanks to the Hawkeyes’ passing attack. The Hawkeyes went into the half with a 21-10 lead and never looked back, spoiling Indiana’s homecoming weekend.

The Hawkeyes will become bowl eligible with a win next Saturday, when they host Maryland.

Ground game and stout defense leads Atlantic to victory at Shenandoah

Sports

October 12th, 2018 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans football team grinded out their third win of the season with a 28-7 victory at Shenandoah Friday night. The Trojans used a strong ground game and stout defense to grab their first district win.

Atlantic rolled up 282 rushing yards against the Mustangs and all four of Atlantic’s scores came in the run game. Tyler Moen led the team with 98 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns.

The Trojan defense was able to limit the Mustangs to just 163 yards of total offense and forced 4 turnovers.

The Trojans turned the ball over themselves 4 times on 4 fumbles, including on their first offensive play of the game. They quickly bounced back from that mistake with a 10-play touchdown drive on their second possession of the game. Tyler Moen capped that one off with a 16 yard touchdown run.

Atlantic would add two more scores in the second quarter on a 5 yard run by Moen and a 3 yard score by Zade Niklasen. The Trojans led 21-0 at half.

Chase Mullenix added a 15 yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter in which he drove a defender backward near the 5 and pushed his way in for the score.

Conner Birt got Shenandoah on the board with a 3 yard touchdown run with 7:14 left to cap off the scoring.

The Trojans improved to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in Class 2A District 9. They return home to finish the season against Red Oak next Friday night.

Shenandoah falls to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the district. They will host Kuemper Catholic in week 9.
