Stout defense highlights AHSTW and Edgewood-Colesburg Semifinal contest

Sports

November 8th, 2018 by admin

The AHSTW Vikings(11-0) will meet up with the Edgewood-Colesburg Vikings (10-1) on Friday afternoon in the Class A Football Semifinals and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. The game will feature two stout defenses. AHSTW has held their opponents to an average of 11.6 points per game. Edgewood-Colesburg has allowed an equally impressive 10.7 points per game to their opponents.

Edgewood-Colesburg is coming off a defensive battle in the quarterfinal round in which they knocked off Bishop Garrigan 6-0. Ed-Co Head Coach James Rochford said his team has been able to achieve some offensive balance when needed, but the defense has been the bell-cow for his team.

Coach Rochford’s two sons are major leaders for the team. Preston Rochford has rushed for 1,872 yards and 26 touchdowns to lead the offense and  is the leading tackler on the team with 86.5 tackles including 9 for loss and 3 sacks. Parker Rochford is the top receiver on the squad with 24 catches for 452 yards and 8 scores. Coach Rochford said it has been fun having the opportunity to coach his sons who really love the game, as does the rest of the team.

Edgewood-Colesburg forced 5 critical turnovers in that quarterfinal win over Bishop-Garrigan. AHSTW Head Coach Davis Pattee talked about what impresses him about the opponent’s defense.

AHSTW is led by a hard-nosed player in Gabe Pauley who has rushed for 1,595 yards and 24 touchdowns, to go along with his team leading 75 tackles. Blake Osbahr has been efficient at quarterback with 1,941 passing yards and 28 touchdowns with just 5 interceptions thrown.  Drake Partridge, Brayton Tuma, Korbin Martin and others have contributed strongly to the offensive attack. Coach Pattee said the Vikings will need to be good up front and move the ball around to be successful this round.

The battle of the Vikings is set for a 1:00pm kickoff on Friday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Chris Parks will have the call on KJAN AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at kjan.com, on the web app, and audio through our facebook page as well. Pregame will begin at 12:00pm. You can also catch the game on our sister-station KNOD 105.3FM in Harlan.

ISU’s Tyson Veidt is a Broyles Award Nominee

Sports

November 8th, 2018 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State assistant head coach/linebackers coach Tyson Veidt is a nominee for the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation’s best assistant coach.

Veidt’s work with Iowa State’s linebackers has been vital to Iowa State’s overall team success and a major reason the Cyclone defense is one of the best in the nation.

Iowa State leads the Big 12 in total defense (324.4; 20th nationally) and scoring defense (21.3; 27th nationally), utilizing a three-man front with heavy emphasis on the play of the linebackers. The Cyclones are one of just six teams nationally to hold six or more opponents to below 3.0 yards per rush.

The Cyclones, which rank 14th nationally in rushing defense at 104.9, have held every opponent to below their season total offensive average.

Behind Veidt’s leadership, the Cyclone linebackers have been phenomenal in stopping the run and in coverage situations.

The Cyclones have used a six-man rotation at linebacker with all six players posting outstanding numbers.

The leader of the group is junior Marcel Spears (WLB), who is averaging 5.0 tackles per game with 4.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks. Spears is also second on the team in interceptions, picking off a pair of passes vs. Texas Tech, including a pick-six, to earn Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Senior Willie Harvey (SLB) is third on the team in tackles (5.6) and fourth in TFL (4.5). His career 26.5 TFL ranks in Iowa State’s top-10.

The Cyclones had to replace an All-American linebacker in Joel Lanning at the MLB spot, and true freshman Mike Rose has filled in without missing a beat. Rose is among the nation’s best rookie tacklers at 5.0, earning ESPN Midseason Freshman All-America honors. Rose also has 5.5 TFL and a sack.

Coming off the bench is sophomore Jake Hummel and freshman O’Rien Vance, who have shown no drop-off when entering the game. Hummel has 17 tackles and 3.5 TFL and Vance has 12 tackles and 3.0 TFL.

In all, ISU’s linebackers have a combined 20.5 TFL, 6.5 sacks, seven PBU and 164 tackles.

As a team, the Cyclones (5-3, 4-2 Big 12) have won four-straight games in conference play for just the eighth time in school history. ISU is currently rated in all three national rankings: CFP (#22), AP (#23), Coaches (#25).

(Learfield Sports) — Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery says junior point guard Jordan Bohannon may play in tonight’s (Thursday night’s) season opener against Missouri-Kansas City. Bohannon missed Sunday’s exhibition game for what McCaffery called a “bad bruise”.

McCaffery says the Hawkeyes want to establish a style of play early.

McCaffery believes this team can become more consistent from the perimeter.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes are becoming appointment viewing as they shatter records and roll up wins. Need evidence? Even coaches pressed for time are tuning in to watch Kansas City’s high-flying offense just for fun. And with several primetime games coming up, there will be plenty of more chances to watch.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State cornerback Duke Shelley was arrested Tuesday for failure to appear and released after paying a $500 bond, though his status for this weekend’s game against Kansas remains in question. A school spokesman said any punishment will be handled internally.

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Triston Simpson scored a career-high 23 points and buried a pair of 3-pointers as South Dakota broke the game open after halftime, defeating York 83-58 in a season opener. The win started off Todd Lee’s tenure as coach with a win. With South Dakota leading 45-32 at the break, Simpson opened the second half with a 3, sparking a 16-5 run that he closed with another 3 four minutes later to put the NAIA Panthers away

UNDATED (AP) — The calendar has barely hit November and the Southeastern Conference championship game matchup is already decided: Alabama will meet Georgia for the league title in Atlanta on December 1. And though the remaining 12 teams can’t win the SEC, there are still plenty of intriguing story lines to follow over the final three weeks of the season.
