ST. LOUIS, Mo., December 5, 2018 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon that they have completed a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, acquiring six-time National League All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in exchange for catcher Carson Kelly, right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver, minor league infielder Andy Young and the Cardinals Compensation Round B selection in the 2019 Major League Baseball amateur draft.

“We’ve been busy this off-season working to upgrade our lineup, and today we are excited to announce the acquisition of one of the game’s premier players in first baseman Paul Goldschmidt,” stated Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak.

Goldschmidt, 31, has been a National League All-Star each of the past six seasons (2013-18), and he is a four-time (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018) N.L. Silver Slugger award winner and three-time (2013, 2015, 2017) Rawlings Gold Glove award recipient.  Goldschmidt is the lone N.L. player to be named an All-Star each of the past six seasons, and he’s one of just three players (Mike Trout and Salvador Pérez) in all of the majors to have done so.

The right-handed hitting Goldschmidt batted .290 in 2018 with 33 home runs and 83 RBI, finishing 6th in National League MVP voting.  The 6-3, 225-pound Delaware native has compiled a career .297 batting mark with 209 HR’s and 710 RBI in 1,092 games and has hit 30 or more homers in four of the last six seasons, including a league-leading 36 in 2013 when he finished 2nd in MVP voting.

“Goldy” owns a career .398 on-base pct. and .532 slugging mark, and since 2013, ranks 2nd among National League leaders in home runs (181), RBI (602), hits (996), runs (599), walks (575), extra base hits (413).  Goldschmidt is the current leader among active MLB first basemen with a .996 fielding percentage and he ranks 5th all-time in MLB history.

The Cardinals are planning to hold a press conference to introduce Goldschmidt on Friday, December 7 in St. Louis, and will have further details once they become available.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson is the recipient of the 2018 John Mackey Award. The award is presented annually to the top tight end in the nation by the John Mackey Award committee.

The John Mackey Award will be presented Dec. 6, in Atlanta, at the Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU (5 p.m. CT). That event precedes the College Football Award Show on ESPN (6 p.m. CT).

Under head coach Kirk Ferentz, nine Hawkeye players have earned 10 individual national Player of the Year awards.

Hockenson (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) is a redshirt sophomore from Chariton (Iowa) High School. He is the second Iowa tight end to earn the award, as Dallas Clark was honored in 2002. Tony Moeaki (2009), Allen Reisner (2010), and Noah Fant (2018) have all been semifinalists for the award.

Hockenson is the first sophomore to win the award, and Iowa is one of two schools (Arkansas) to have multiple winners of the award. Hockenson is the fifth Big Ten player to be recognized.

Hockenson was previously named the Kwalick-Clark Big Ten Tight End of the Year. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors from league media and second-team honors (behind teammate Fant) from Big Ten coaches. Hockenson is also the recipient of the Ozzie Newsome Award, presented by the Touchdown Club of Columbus.

Hockenson leads Iowa with 46 receptions for 717 yards and six receiving touchdowns. He also has one rushing touchdown. Hockenson averages 15.6 yards per catch. His career totals include 70 receptions for 1,037 yards. He is seventh among Iowa tight ends all-time with nine touchdown receptions and he has one career rushing touchdown. Hockenson has surpassed 100 receiving yards twice in 2018, with 125 yards on three receptions versus Wisconsin and four catches for 107 yards at Indiana.

(Radio Iowa) — Florida voters chose last month to close all of that state’s dog tracks in 2020 — but the head of Iowa’s only greyhound racing track says he expects to be in business for at least a few more years. Iowa saw the number of dog tracks cut in half after the Iowa Legislature passed a bill in 2014 that shut down the Council Bluffs Greyhound track and turned over management of the Iowa Greyhound Park in Dubuque to the Iowa Greyhound Association. Track general manager, Brian Carpenter, says the closing of Florida’s 11 tracks by the end of 2020 could mean fewer dogs being bred to run at other tracks, including Iowa’s. “You know, I’ve heard over the years for many years how we were coming to an end, and we’re still hanging in there 34 years later. Hopefully we’ll have many more, but we’ll see what happens,” Carpenter says.

Iowa’s greyhound season runs from May through October, and many of the dogs at the Dubuque track have run in Florida during the winter. Jason Hess owns Xtrem Hess Racing kennel in Dubuque, one of nine that breed dogs that race at the Iowa facility. He says he’ll breed fewer greyhounds right away. “Because with less tracks coming — it takes about 18 months when puppies start racing, so almost two years after breeding them — and that’s when Florida is going to be ending. But we do have some tracks left, so we’re still going to be operational,” Hess says.

He says says it could become difficult to get enough dogs to race a full season. The Dubuque track will be one of just six greyhound tracks left in the U-S once Florida shuts down its track.

The league and Kansas City Chiefs quickly changed their approach toward the star running back after video was released showing Hunt pushing and kicking a woman at a Cleveland hotel. The league has tried to change following its mishandling of the Ray Rice domestic violence case in 2014.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey is leaving Auburn to take the same job at Kansas. New Kansas coach Les Miles has named Lindsey to his staff. Lindsey has been Auburn’s offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. In 2017, Auburn’s offense was just the eighth in SEC history to rush and pass for 3,000 yards. Lindsey also has been offensive coordinator at Southern Miss and Arizona State.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Becca Hittner scored 23 points to lead No. 21 Drake past Clarke College 91-43. Sara Rhine added 22 points, making all 10 of her shots. Tina Ubl led Clarke with 14 points and Makenna Haase added 12 points and 13 rebounds. A record crowd at the Knapp Center of more than 6,000 was on hand for the annual game for elementary and middle school students.

The Atlantic/CAM wrestling team picked up two big Hawkeye Ten dual wins on Tuesday night in Creston. The Trojans beat Red Oak 48-23 and then defeated Creston O-M 40-27. Red Oak edged Creston 37-36 in the other dual of the night.

The Atlantic Trojans boys basketball team picked up a road win over Red Oak on Tuesday night. Atlantic built an early lead but a slight lull in the second quarter let the Tigers hang around until halftime. The Trojans then outscored the Tigers by 9 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach and won it 61-34.

Atlantic led 15-6 at the end of the first and 25-18 at halftime. The third quarter outburst put Atlantic up 41-25 at the end of three.

Chase Mullenix led the scoring for the Trojans with 28 points. Tyler Moen dropped in 9 and Logan Reilly has 8 in the win. The Trojans improved to 2-1 on the season and will travel to Creston on Friday night as part of a girl/boy varsity doubleheader.

Red Oak falls to 0-2 on the season. Isaac Birt was the Tigers’ leading scorer on the night with 15 points. Red Oak will next travel to St. Albert on Friday night.

Tina Ubl led Clarke (7-3) with 14 points and Makenna Haase added 12 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks. The Bulldogs led 52-22 at halftime and held Clarke to just nine points in the third quarter.
Drake shot 59 percent from the field and made 9 of 18 from 3-point range.

The Bulldogs, who led the country in assists coming into the game, had 29. Maddie Monahan had seven of them.
