Carleton’s 33 leads No. 25 Iowa State women by Kansas 82-73

Sports

January 5th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Bridget Carleton scored 33 points on 11-of-17 shooting, moving up two spots in Iowa State’s all-time top 10 scoring last, and the No. 25 Cyclones defeated Kansas State 82-73 on Saturday. Kristin Scott had a perfect day shooting going 7 for 7 with three 3-pointers for 17 points for the Cyclones (12-2, 2-0 Big 12). Carleton moved up to seventh on the career list with her 29th 20-point game.

Iowa State, which has won six straight, outscored the Jayhawks 22-12 in the second quarter to lead 39-29 at the half. The Cyclones were 5 of 10 from 3-point range and shot 57 percent overall in the first half. They stretched the lead to 17 after three quarters and 21 early in the fourth quarter before Kansas raced back. An 8-0 run, followed by a 10-0, had the Jayhawks within 63-71 when Kylee Kopatich hit a 3-pointer with 3:14 to play. Kopatich had a 3 on the next possession to make it a seven-point deficit but the Jayhawks couldn’t stay hot and Iowa State made 9 of 10 from the foul line in the final 2½ minutes.

Christalah Lyons led Kansas (10-2, 0-1) with a career-high 24 points. The Jayhawks were off to their best start since opening 13-1 eight seasons back and had won seven straight at home before losing their seventh-straight to Iowa State.

Balanced effort gives AHSTW big home win over Audubon in boys hoops

Sports

January 4th, 2019 by admin

The AHSTW Vikings picked up a huge Western Iowa Conference home win on Friday night over Audubon 71-65. The Vikings put out a very balanced effort with 5 guys dropping in 8 or more points. Freshman Raydden Grobe came off the bench to lead the team with 22 points, including 4 three pointers. Sam Porter was huge down the stretch dropping in 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter.

The Wheelers led 16-15 at the end of the first quarter and a late second quarter spurt gave AHSTW a 7-point halftime lead at 36-29. The Wheelers would erase that lead early in the third quarter and eventually lead by the end of the third 51-49. The Vikings were then able to make some big plays down the stretch. Grobe hit two fourth quarter threes and after the second one Sam Porter followed it with a wide open corner three to swing the game from a three point deficit to a three point lead at 62-59 for the Vikings. The game would get tied back up at 62 but the Vikings would never trail again. Sam Porter connected on two straight one-and-one free throw opportunities to increase a one point Viking lead to 5 and help secure the win.

AHSTW Head Coach GG Harris said their help defense was really good and helped them slow down the Wheelers’ stars.

Harris was impressed with the way his young team responded to Audubon’s good start to the second half.

The Vikings also got 11 points from Blake Osbahr and 8 apiece from Clayton Akers and Joey Cunningham. AHSTW improves to 6-4 and will next travel to Treynor on Tuesday.

The Wheelers were led by 27 points from Kaiden Smith and 19 from Lane Lawson. The Wheelers fall to 7-3 and will host Orient-Macksburg next on Monday.

The AHSTW Lady Vikes used a 25-0 run spanning halftime to push away to a win over the Audubon Wheelers 58-44 on Friday night in Avoca. The Lady Vikes got out to a 7 point lead by the end of the first quarter and Audubon would get back to within 3 early in the second quarter. That’s when AHSTW started their run. They pushed ahead by 19 at halftime and would pour on the first 11 points of the third quarter to blow the game open.

AHSTW was led by 16 points from Claire Harris, 14 from Claire Denning, and 10 from Kinsey Scheffler. The Lady Vikes improved to 7-3 with the win and will next host Essex on Saturday.

The Wheelers got 13 points from Rylie Hartl off the bench. The Wheelers fall to 5-6 on the year and will travel to IKM-Manning next Tuesday.

AP All-Pro team has Kansas City accent: Mahomes, 3 teammates

Sports

January 4th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and three other Kansas City Chiefs players made The Associated Press 2018 NFL All-Pro Team on Friday. They were joined by the first rookie teammates since 1965 — Colts guard left Quenton Nelson and linebacker Darius Leonard. Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald was the only unanimous choice in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league.

Mahomes, Kansas City’s second-year sensation, drew 45 votes at quarterback and was joined by teammates Travis Kelce at tight end, Tyreek Hill as the flex player and Mitchell Schwartz at right tackle. Nelson and Leonard are among four rookies on the squad, a first for the AP team. Seahawks punter Michael Dickson and Chargers safety Derwin James also made it. The last time rookies from the same team were All-Pros was 1965. And that was not a bad combo: Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers, both Hall of Famers. Chicago also had four All-Pros: edge rusher Khalil Mack, cornerback Kyle Fuller, safety Eddie Jackson and punt returner Tarik Cohen. Two players made All-Pro for the fifth time: Houston edge rusher J.J. Watt and Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly. Brothers also were voted to the squad: Travis Kelce of the Chiefs and Eagles center Jason Kelce.

The All-Pro team had a split of 14 AFC and 14 NFC members. There were 16 newcomers: Mahomes; Schwartz; Fuller; Jackson; Cohen; Saints receiver Michael Thomas; Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari; Eagles interior defensive lineman Fletcher Cox; Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore; Chargers defensive back Desmond King and special teamer Adrian Phillips; Jets kick returner Andre Roberts; and the four rookies.
Players with previous All-Pro honors who made the 2018 team included Donald and Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner, each for the fourth time; Mack, Dallas right guard Zack Martin and Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, each for the third time; Hill; Rams running back Todd Gurley; and Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins got the most votes on offense with 46.

Drake’s Nick Norton out for season with left knee injury

Sports

January 4th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake senior guard Nick Norton will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury. The Bulldogs said Friday that Norton, who is averaging 14 points and 5.9 points per game, tore the ACL in his left knee in the first half of Wednesday’s double-overtime loss at Evansville. Losing Norton, a graduate transfer from UAB, could be a big blow to Drake’s Missouri Valley title hopes. The Bulldogs got off to an 11-2 start before falling at Evansville in the league opener.
