Iowa men win B1G track crown

(Radio Iowa) — The Iowa men used the home track advantage to win the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championship, Sunday. It was the Hawkeyes first title since 2011 and just the fourth in program history, Iowa coach Joey Woody.

The Hawkeye women equaled their best effort with a third place finish.

No. 24 Iowa stumbles against Michigan State

(Radio Iowa) — After six straight series wins the 24th ranked Iowa baseball team stumbled against Michigan State, Sunday. The Spartans scored five runs in the seventh inning to rally for a 7-5 win to claim the rubber game of their three game set. The loss drops the Hawkeyes to 12-9 and into sixth place in the Big Ten.

(Iowa coach Rick Heller). All five runs in the seventh for the Spartans were scored with two outs.

The Hawkeyes are 30-19 overall and next up visit Western Illinois on Tuesday in nonconference play,

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Josh Bell homered and drove in a career-high five runs and Adam Frazier hit a tiebreaking, pinch-hit double to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 10-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates scored five times in the seventh inning and twice in the eighth to rally from a 6-3 deficit. Pittsburgh has won six of eight, including the final three of its four-game series at St. Louis. Paul Goldschmidt and José Martínez homered for the Cardinals, who have lost five of six and nine of 11.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cole Irvin was outstanding in his major league debut and the Philadelphia Phillies scored six times in the fifth inning to beat the Kansas City Royals 6-1 in the rubber match of their three-game series. J.T. Realmuto hit a two-run double and Odubel Herrera followed with a two-run single for Philadelphia.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Alex Bowman quite literally had his first NASCAR Cup Series victory in his sights, ticking off the laps in his No. 88 Chevrolet at the front of the pack at Kansas Speedway. Too bad Brad Keselowski was in his rearview mirror. The result was a third consecutive second-place run for a driver still in search of his first win.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Paul Arriola scored in his second consecutive game and D.C. United beat Sporting Kansas City 1-0. Bill Hamid had four saves for D.C. United (7-3-2) for his sixth shutout of the season.

UNDATED (AP) — Triple-A baseball is seeing a dramatic increase in home runs with the major league ball being used for the first time at the highest level of the minor leagues. Home runs among the 30 Triple-A teams were up 65% over a comparable period in 2018. The Triple-A per-game average of 1.29 homers is even with the major league average and is a 48% increase from the 2018 Triple-A full-season average of 0.87.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Josh Bell put on a show for his mom on Mother’s Day. With his mother Myrtle in the stands at Busch Stadium, Bell homered and drove in a career-high five runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 10-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

Adam Frazier added a two-run, tiebreaking pinch-hit double as the Pirates scored five times in the seventh inning and twice in the eighth to rally from a 6-3 deficit.
Pittsburgh has won six of eight, including the final three of its four-game series at St. Louis.

St. Louis starter Dakota Hudson gave up three runs on nine hits over six innings.
Brault, making his second start of the season, lasted 3 2/3 innings. He gave up six runs on nine hits.

The crowd was announced at 48,555, the largest in the history of the new Busch Stadium, which opened in 2006. It was St. Louis’ fourth sellout of the season. INF Matt Carpenter was held out of the starting lineup for a day of rest. He walked as pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Cardinals: RHP Jack Flaherty (3-3, 4.32) will face Atlanta RHP Mike Foltynewicz (0-2, 5.94) as the teams begin a three-game series Tuesday. The Cardinals were shut out in each of Flaherty’s last two starts.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The Latest on the NASCAR Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway: Brad Keselowski raced to his third NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season, holding off a charging pack in overtime to take the checkered flag at Kansas Speedway. Alex Bowman was second and Erik Jones third.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jordan Lyles overcame a 30-pitch first inning to combine with four relievers on a two-hitter, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 for their seventh win in 10 games following an eight-game losing streak. Lyles allowed one hit through six innings and lowered his ERA to 2.09, fifth-best in the NL. Lyles was removed after 101 pitches. He had been 0-1 with a pair of no-decisions since beating San Francisco on April 19.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Zach Eflin became the majors’ first pitcher with two complete games this season, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies over the Kansas City Royals 7-0. Eflin finished his second career shutout, the other coming July 22, 2016 in his eighth major league start. He allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked none while throwing 110 pitches.

Class 1A Region 2

Atlantic hosted a portion of the Class 1A Region 2 Girls Tennis Bracket on Saturday. Red Oak came out the winner of the four teams at the site.

In first round play Red Oak defeated Atlantic 5-0 and Creston beat Southwest Valley 5-0. Red Oak then defeated Creston in the Regional Semifinal 5-0.

The Tigers Advance to the Regional Final next Saturday, May 18th against Kuemper Catholic at 1:00pm and will once again be played in Atlantic.

Kuemper advanced out of another quadrant of the bracket played in Denison. The Knights beat Harlan 5-0 in the first round and Denison beat Audubon 5-2. Kuemper Catholic then defeated Denison-Schleswig 5-0 in the Semis.

Class 1A Region 3

In Region 3 play at Shenandoah the Fillies advanced to the Regional Final. Shenandoah beat St. Albert 5-0 and Glenwood topped Clarinda 5-1. Shenandoah then beat Glenwood 5-2. The Fillies will have to wait until Monday to find out their opponent. Play in Pella was postponed to Monday.

Norwalk tops Atlantic in Preliminary Sub-State Boys Tennis

The Atlantic boys tennis team fell to Norwalk on Saturday in a Preliminary Sub-State Team match in Atlantic. Norwalk came out on top 5-1.

Atlantic got their lone win on the day from Nile Petersen at #1 Singles.

With the win Norwalk advances to Sub-State play on Saturday, May 18th at Norwalk.
