Doyle named to U.S. Pan American Games Team

Sports

May 20th, 2019 by admin

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of Iowa senior Kathleen Doyle has earned a spot on the 2019 U.S. Pan American Games Women’s Basketball Team roster, USA Basketball announced today.

The 12-member team was selected by the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team Committee. Team members will return to Colorado Springs for training camp July 23-Aug. 5, before competing in the women’s basketball tournament at the 2019 Pan American Games from Aug. 6-10 in Lima, Peru.

Doyle is the first Hawkeye student-athlete to make the U.S. Pan American Team since 1999 (Amy Herrig). She is the fourth Hawkeye to ever make the team (Herrig, Michelle Edwards, Cindy Haugejorde). Lisa Bluder led team USA to a silver medal as the head coach in 2015.

A native of LaGrange Park, Illinois, Doyle was a first team All-Big Ten selection (coaches) this past season. She registered single-season career-highs in points, 3-pointers made, field goals made, and field goal percentage.

Doyle led the Hawkeyes in assists, averaging 5.9 per game – a mark that led the Big Ten and ranked 15th nationally. She also led the team in steals (2.3 per game) and was second in scoring, averaging 12.0 points per contest.

Iowa places volleyball coach on 30-day paid leave

Sports

May 20th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa put women’s volleyball coach Bond Shymansky on paid administrative leave Monday after reporting what its athletic director called serious rules violations to the NCAA. Athletic director Gary Barta said he took those steps after a two-week investigation by an outside law firm into allegations raised by a former athlete. Barta declined to elaborate on the nature of the allegations at a news conference, citing the pending NCAA investigation. But he said they were likely to be considered Level 1 or Level 2 violations, meaning they gave at least a minimal recruiting, competitive or other advantage to the Hawkeyes.

“I won’t talk specifically about what it was, but I am comfortable enough to say that everyone who works in college athletics is very familiar with this line that can’t be crossed,” he said, adding that the violations were not criminal in nature.

Iowa named assistant coach Vicki Brown as the interim head coach. Barta said the 30-day leave upon which Shymansky was placed is consistent with the coach’s contract, which requires a 30-day written notice if the university plans to terminate him for cause. Barta said he planned to decide on the coach’s future with the program soon. Barta hired Shymansky, who previously coached at Marquette, in 2014 to turn around a struggling program. Iowa went 15-16 under Shymansky in 2018, his fifth season in charge of the Hawkeyes. The team won 18 games in 2017, its most since 1994. Shymansky’s contract runs through the 2022 season and pays him a base salary of $215,000.

Barta said Iowa learned of the allegations on May 1 and hired the New York-based Bond, Schoeneck & King law firm to investigate. He said the investigation found that no other Iowa staff members or players were involved in or aware of the violations. Barta, who has long operated under the mantra of “Win, Graduate, Do it Right,” said staff and current and incoming players were informed of the situation Monday and reacted with anger and sadness. “Clearly in this case we have an employee who came up short on the ‘Do it Right’ part,” he said.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nomar Mazara hit a sacrifice fly off St. Louis reliever Carlos Martinez to cap a two-run rally in the 10th inning, lifting the Texas Rangers over the Cardinals 5-4. Both teams blew leads in the late innings before Texas won.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Danny Duffy won his third straight start and the Kansas City Royals stopped a four-game skid with a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Hunter Dozier hit a two-run double and Duffy allowed five hits in six effective innings.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Clint Bowyer and Ryan Newman fought after the NASCAR All-Star Race on Saturday night, Bowyer throwing punches through Newman’s window after the cool-down lap. The two cars had tangled on the track several times during NASCAR’s prime-time spectacle and tempers flared after the cool-down lap. Bowyer looked like a Rock’em-Sock’em Robot as he rotated punches at the sitting Newman. Bowyer said Newman’s actions warranted a response. Newman believes Bowyer should be “embarrassed” with himself.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout drove a long homer for the 250th of his career, Shohei Ohtani also went deep and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3. Trout’s solo shot to left-center off starter Jakob Junis made him the sixth AL player to reach 250 homers before his 28th birthday. The 473-footer was also his second longest since Statcast began measuring them in 2015 and the third longest in the majors this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Eagles defensive lineman Chris Long has announced his retirement from football. He ends an 11-year NFL playing career that included winning two Super Bowl titles and the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. Long posted his decision Twitter. The 33-year-old Long is the son of Hall of Famer Howie Long. He had 70 career sacks and 15 forced fumbles in stints with the Rams, Patriots and Eagles.
