Cardinals place Wainwright on 10-day Injured List

Sports

June 10th, 2019 by admin

MIAMI, Fla., June 10, 2019 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced that RHP Adam Wainwright has been placed on the 10-day Injured List with a left hamstring strain effective today.  Right-handed pitcher Ryan Helsley has been recalled from Memphis (AAA).

Wainwright, 37, was removed from last night’s game in Chicago during the 5th inning after injuring his left hamstring while reaching base on a double in the top half of the 5th inning.

The Cardinals veteran pitcher has made 13 starts this season, tied for the most on the club, while ranking second on the team in innings pitched (70.1) and strikeouts (61).  During last night’ game, Wainwright became the sixth pitcher in Cardinals franchise history to surpass 2,000 innings pitched.

The move to the Injured List is Wainwright’s first since last May 14-September 9, 2018, when he missed 104 games with right elbow inflammation.  This marks Wainwright’s ninth term on the Injured List over his 14-year Major League career.

Helsley, 24, has made six relief appearances for the Cardinals this season posting no record and a 2.70 ERA while holding his opposition to a .121 batting average (4-33).  The rookie right-hander is coming off back-to-back scoreless appearances this past weekend in Chicago, before being optioned back to Memphis on Sunday with the recall of RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon.  Today will mark Helsley’s fourth recall of the season to St. Louis.

Right-handed pitcher Merandy González has cleared waivers and will be out-righted off the St. Louis Cardinals 40-man roster.  He remains in Springfield (AA) on the Cardinals double-A active roster.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Pinch-hitter Victor Caratini hit a tiebreaking bases-loaded double in Chicago’s four-run sixth inning and the Cubs rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-4. The Cubs won for the fifth time in six games.

CHICAGO (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals placed infielder Jedd Gyorko on the 10-day injured list with a strained lower back before their game against the Chicago Cubs and purchased the contract of infielder Tommy Edman from Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals also designated right-handed reliever Merandy Gonzalez for assignment. Gyorko said he first felt his back spasm in the third inning of Friday’s 3-1 loss to the Cubs when he fielded Anthony Rizzo’s grounder at third base. Gyorko left the game in the fifth.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lucas Giolito worked into the eighth inning and had a career-high 11 strikeouts to win his seventh consecutive start, outdueling Brad Keller as the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0. Giolito allowed three hits and two walks in 7 2/3 innings and lowered his ERA to 2.28. He has allowed no more than one run in six of his seven straight wins. Rookie Eloy Jiménez hit a two-run homer in the second inning off Keller, who otherwise was nearly as good as Giolito.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins are so tight that Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final like so many before in the playoffs is absolutely in danger of hinging on officiating. Changes are very likely coming to video review and how the NHL handles these situations moving forward, but none of that will affect the Blues and Bruins tonight (Sunday night), when the Stanley Cup could get wheeled onto the ice for a celebration or put on a plane back to Boston for a potential deciding Game 7.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Due to suspensions and injuries, the St. Louis Blues will have their sixth different lineup combination in six games during the Stanley Cup Final. Instead of interrupting continuity, the Blues’ game of musical jerseys of players in and out of the lineup has given them a variety of looks for the Bruins to contend with and contributed to St. Louis being on the verge of winning the Stanley Cup.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Steve Torrence led Top Fuel and J.R. Todd was tops in Funny Car after qualifying at the NHRA Heartland Nationals. Torrence, the defending champion and Top Fuel points leader, had a second run of 3.760 seconds at 325.45 miles per hour. Todd, the defending champion in Funny Car, earned his first No. 1 qualifying spot of the season after his run of 3.924 at 318.99 mph in Toyota Camry on Friday night stood remained the best.
