Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Indians star Francisco Lindor hit a foul ball that injured a child in a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals. Lindor says he was told a 3-year-old boy was struck by his line drive and taken to the hospital. It was the latest instance this season around the majors of a fan being injured by a foul, a situation that has raised calls for big league teams to extend the protective netting at their ballparks.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Yairo Munoz celebrated a rare start with a home run and a triple to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-1. Munoz, making his 16th start among 55 games, also singled to finish with three of the six hits for the Cardinals, who improved to 7-3 since the All-Star break.

UNDATED (AP) — Mike Montgomery was traded from the Cubs to Kansas City, but the left-hander’s place in Chicago history is secure. Montgomery was on the mound for the final out of the 2016 World Series, when the Cubs beat Cleveland in Game 7 to end their 108-year title drought.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Yairo Munoz celebrated a rare start with a home run and a triple to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-1 on Sunday. Munoz, making his 16th start among 55 games, also singled to finish with three of the six hits for the Cardinals, who improved to 7-3 since the All-Star break. His second homer of the season in the ninth, off Raisel Iglesias, gave St. Louis an insurance run. The Reds avoided their ninth shutout loss of the season on Phillip Ervin’s eighth-inning pinch-hit home run off Andrew Miller.

Just two Reds baserunners got as far as second base in the first four innings against Jack Flaherty, who was 0-3 over his last 10 starts since winning at Atlanta on May 14, before they loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth. Flaherty got Yasiel Puig to pop out, and Giovanny Gallegos (2-1) came on to fan Josh VanMeter and Scooter Gennett, the first two of four straight strikeouts. Carlos Martinez pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

Anthony DeSclafani (5-5) struck out a career-high 11 and allowed just one earned run in six innings, but a shaky second was all the Cardinals needed. Four different Cardinals stole bases while St. Louis was scoring two runs in the inning. Tyler O’Neill scored from third on Munoz’s one-out bloop single to right over a drawn-in Cincinnati infield. Andrew Knizer walked and, after a double steal, Munoz scored an unearned run on Suarez’s error of Harrison Bader’s sharp one-hopper. DeSclafani allowed four hits and no walks.

RAGBRAI riders descend upon Atlantic for “Sunday Funday”

News, Sports

July 21st, 2019 by Ric Hanson

Thousands of bicyclists and their support vehicles and/or entourages are set to enter Atlantic today (Sunday), as they dip their rear wheels in the Missouri River and take on the first leg of pedaling from Council Bluffs to their first overnight stay here in town. When they arrive, they can expect to find a lot of food and entertainment downtown.

Vendors will be ready to serve them in the City Park, and many church groups or organizations will be available as well to serve a variety of tasty treats to help replenish some of those burned-off calories from the first ride, which is 60-miles, or about 80-miles if riders chose to take memorial loop in McClelland.

A reminder, several streets have been blocked-off to vehicle traffic through 2-a.m. Sunday. Information about street closures and parking restrictions have been mentioned numerous times on KJAN, and the information is still available in stories on our News page, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

There’s a beer garden that will be set-up in the City Park, and the Atlantic Chamber has teamed-up with First Whitney Bank to have the downtown Christmas light turned on tonight, to add an extra special glow to the festivities. Stage entertainment in the downtown City Park includes opening act “Freakabout,” a four-piece rock band from Lincoln, NE. The headliner band is “Hairball,” who will perform a two-hour homage to some of the biggest arena acts in the world, including Van Halen, KISS, Motley Crue, Queen, Journey, and Aerosmith. Both concerts are free.

The riders and their support teams will begin to depart Atlantic on Monday, some well before the sun rises, so motorists are urged to be extremely cautious. They’ll be pedaling 68-miles from Atlantic, through Wiota, Anita, Adair, Casey, Menlo, Stuart, Dexter and Earlham, with their second overnight stop in Winterset. The 427 mile cross-State ride ends next Saturday, in Keokuk, with the dipping of wheels into the Mississippi River.

Newgarden dominates in IndyCar victory in Iowa

Sports

July 21st, 2019 by Ric Hanson

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — IndyCar point leader Josef Newgarden led 245 laps of 300 laps and won the weather-delayed race early Sunday at the Iowa Speedway, his fourth victory of the season. Newgarden’s run resembled his dominant win on Iowa’s short oval in 2016. Newgarden led a series-record 282 laps three years ago in Newton.

Five-time champion Scott Dixon gave Newgarden a push after benefiting from a late caution and rallied to finish second. Dixon was joined on the podium by James Hinchcliffe, who won in Iowa a year ago. Simon Pagenaud was fourth, followed by Spencer Pigot and Alexander Rossi.

Start of Iowa IndyCar race delayed by rain and lightning

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — The start of the IndyCar race Saturday night at Iowa Speedway has been delayed by rain and lightning. Simon Pagenaud, the winner last weekend in Toronto, won his second straight pole Friday. He’ll be joined by Penske teammate Will Power on the front row. Series leader Josef Newgarden qualified third.

Sebastian Bourdais will make his 200th career start at a race that, thanks to the weather, might be 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the teams expected when they set up their cars for the short oval.
