Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes escaped significant damage to ligaments when he dislocated his right kneecap against Denver and could be back in four to six weeks. Mahomes has had an MRI exam. The league’s MVP was injured during Thursday night’s win.

DENVER (AP) — The Year of the Backup Quarterback now features Matt Moore, a 35-year-old journeyman who was out of football last year. Moore was thrust into the Chiefs’ lineup when reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes injured his right knee at Denver. The league’s celebration of its 100th season has been marred by the loss of some of its biggest stars. The club of QBs sidelined so far includes Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Cam Newton, Nick Foles, Josh Allen, Mitchell Trubisky and Sam Darnold.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Clint Bowyer rolled into Kansas Speedway on Friday with the comfort of knowing he’ll be with Stewart-Haas Racing next season and the uncertainty of whether he’ll be in the playoffs next week. The native Kansan reached a contract extension with SHR to remain in the No. 14 Ford regardless of what happens Sunday, when Bowyer faces postseason elimination. He sits 11th in the 12-driver field with the bottom four drivers eliminated after the race at Kansas Speedway.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Christian Eckes won the ARCA Series finale along with its season championship Friday night. The 18-year-old from Greenville, New York, had a 15-point lead on Venturini Motorsports teammate Michael Self heading into the race at Kansas Speedway. Self went to the front early in the race before Eckes, who started from the back after an engine change, methodically reeled him in.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The No. 47 team from JTG Daugherty Racing was busy putting an engine into a backup car for Ryan Preece after its team transporter caught fire the previous day. The drivers in the hauler were not injured, though the team was unsure what could be salvaged of the cars. Meanwhile, the Xfinity Series entry from Kaulig Racing was scrambling after its own hauler crashed down an embankment. Nobody was hurt in that wreck, either.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Missouri coach Barry Odom knows the dangers of going on the road and how a few mistakes can prove very costly. Though Missouri is ranked No. 22 and has won five straight, Odom is going back to basics as his Tigers visit Vanderbilt for their first road game since a stunning loss at Wyoming to open this season. He says the Tigers will treat this like their first game of the year. The staff is reminding players to prepare and play diligently to avoid a road misstep against a desperate team.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Every time that longtime Kansas State coach Bill Snyder seemed to be leaning toward retirement, it seemed as if TCU coach Gary Patterson’s name would surface as the logical successor for the Wildcats. Things never quite worked out that way, and now Chris Klieman will lead the Wildcats against Patterson’s Horned Frogs on Saturday.

AHSTW grinds out win over Southwest Valley

The AHSTW Vikings grinded out a win over Southwest Valley 25-12 on Friday night in Avoca. The Vikings came up with some big plays at key points of the game to pick up their 5th win of the season.

Both team scored on their opening offensive possessions. The Vikings drove all the way inside the Timberwolves 5 yard line on the opening possession of the game. They Timberwolves defense bowed up though and the Vikings settled for a 22-yard field goal from Raydden Grobe. The Timberwolves answered on their first possession. After a holding call threatened to stall their drive, quarterback Brendan Knapp launched a 76 yard touchdown pass to Blaine Venteicher to give the Timberwolves the lead. Their PAT was blocked and the score was 6-3.

The defensed then dominated the bulk of the half until the Vikings connected on a touchdown pass from Blake Holst to Raydden Grobe with 29 seconds left in the half. Grobe added the point after and it was 10-6 at half.

The teams would once again trade scores to start the second half. Knapp scored on a 1 yard run to put Southwest Valley up 12-10 after a failed 2pt try. Blake Holst then scored on a 4 yard run to put the Vikings up 17-12. The next 7 possessions ended in punts or turnovers for both squads as the defenses held firm. The Vikings were eventually able to capitalize on their second interception of the half when Jackson Woltmann ripped off a 45 yard touchdown run to seal the win.

AHSTW improves to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in Class A District 9. They travel to St. Albert for their final regular season game next week. The Timberwolves fall to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the district. They will host Riverside next week.

AP Source: Chiefs QB Mahomes could miss 4-6 weeks

Sports

October 18th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

UNDATED (AP) — A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes escaped significant damage to ligaments when he dislocated his right kneecap against Denver and could be back in 4-6 weeks. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Friday because the Chiefs have not revealed any sort of timetable for his return. Mahomes underwent an MRI exam earlier in the day.

The reigning league MVP was hurt during the Chiefs’ 30-6 win in Denver on Thursday night while sneaking for a first down on fourth-and-short deep in Broncos territory. Everyone jumped up from the pile but Mahomes, who immediately grabbed for his right knee as trainers rushed onto the field.

Team physicians were able to get his patella back in place on the field. The Chiefs play Green Bay a week from Sunday, then face the Vikings and Titans before a Monday night matchup against Tennessee on Nov. 18. The Chiefs (5-2) have their bye the following week, so it is possible they hold Mahomes out until Dec. 1 against Oakland. The Packers-Chiefs game was supposed to be a Sunday night showdown between Mahomes and Green Bay counterpart Aaron Rodgers. Now it’s merely an intriguing matchup of playoff contenders.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said journeyman quarterback Matt Moore, who was signed just before the season, would be the starter going forward, and that rookie Kyle Shurmur — the son of longtime NFL coach Pat Shurmur — could be elevated from the practice squad as the backup.

Chiefs dominate Broncos, Mahomes leaves with knee injury

Sports

October 18th, 2019 by admin

DENVER (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs rediscovered their mojo but lost their maestro.

The Chiefs rallied around their fallen superstar and snapped a two-game skid with a 30-6 thrashing of the Denver Broncos on Thursday night after reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes dislocated his right knee in a pileup near the goal line in the first half.

“I’ve never seen anything like that on the field before,” Denver defensive end Shelby Harris said. “His knee was literally all the way to the side, his kneecap was. I wish him the best. We definitely need him in the league, he’s definitely a big attraction in the league.

“You never want to see anyone get hurt, especially like that. I hope everything is good and I hope he has a speedy recovery.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after the game that didn’t know how serious Mahomes’ injury was, but added that, “We’re good with whatever direction this thing goes.”

Backup Matt Moore threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill and the Chiefs (5-2) collected nine sacks, gave up a season-low 71 yards rushing and beat the Broncos (2-5) for the eighth straight time.

His balky left ankle heavily taped, Mahomes completed 10 of 11 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown, before getting injured on a successful sneak on fourth-and-inches at the Denver 5 early in the second quarter.

One by one, players peeled off the pile but when Mahomes didn’t get up , the stadium grew quiet, Broncos players knelt and some Chiefs stormed away in aguish as their quarterback ripped off his helmet and covered his face.

Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. went over to shake Mahomes’ hand as he awaited medical help, his right knee stuck in an awkward angle.

“Hopefully he’s not too injured, for the season,” Harris said. “He’s great for our league, he’s a great player. So, hopefully he’s not hurt too bad.”

As players milled about nervously, the Chiefs’ medical personnel appeared to pop Mahomes’ right knee back in place before he was helped from the field and taken into the locker room.

“Excited for the win,” Moore said. “At the same time, a guy like Patrick goes down it can be deflating.”

Before he got hurt, Mahomes became the fastest player in NFL history to throw for 7,500 yards, in just his 25th game.

“You feel for anybody that has something that looks like it may be pretty serious,” Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco said. “That’s not just other quarterbacks; that’s everybody. But man, a young guy like that who’s starting off his career the way he has and starting off this season the way he has, it’s definitely not easy to watch guys go down with injuries like that. I hope that he’s all right.”

Mahomes, who has 15 TDs and one interception this season, didn’t speak with reporters after the game but he did lead the team’s “breakdown,” in the winning locker room, praising Moore, who completed 10 of 19 passes for 117 yards, and the defense.

“Just seeing him in the locker room after the game, standing on his feet and just super optimistic about everything I think that shows one more time how strong of a man he is and how good of leader he is,” said guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. “He’s said, ‘I’m going to get better, we’re going to get this team back on track,’ and it was great to just see him walk and smile at the end.”

The Broncos had won two straight and were aiming to turn the AFC West upside down by handling the Chiefs their third straight loss. But the Chiefs, who were 24th in the league with just 11 sacks coming in, sacked Flacco a career-high eight times and held Denver’s running back duo in check after allowing an average of 190 over their previous four games.

When Flacco did stay upright to deliver deep passes, they fell incomplete. Rookie tight end Noah Fant dropped three passes that would have totaled more than 100 yards, and Denver converted just one of 13 third downs.

“This is about as bad an offense as I’ve seen,” Fox NFL analyst Troy Aikman exclaimed at one point. “I’m shocked there’s as many people still here at the game.”

Flacco, who was sacked five times and knocked down eight more times in 15 first-half drop-backs, was sack-stripped by linebacker Anthony Hutchins on the next series and linebacker Reggie Ragland scooped up the loose ball at the 5 and rumbled into the end zone for a 20-6 halftime lead.
