Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Kathleen Doyle had 31 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists, Makenzie Meyer scored seven of her 17 points in the final three minutes, and Iowa beat No. 12 Indiana 91-85 in double overtime. The Hawkeyes extended their home win streak to 30 games. Jaelynn Penn had 24 points for he Hoosiers, who have lost 20 consecutive road games against Iowa, dating to Feb. 20, 1994. Meyer hit a 3-pointer and then made a layup to give the Hawkeyes a five-point lead – their biggest of the game to that point – with 1:56 left in the second OT.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Abby Hipp scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Alexa Willard scored 12 and the No. 20-ranked Missouri State women’s basketball team beat Northern Iowa 80-66. The Bears have now won five straight following a 64-52 defeat to the then 17th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs. Northern Iowa’s lone lead came out the outset when Karli Rucker made a 3-pointer 29 seconds in. Missouri State then ran off 13 straight and finished the first quarter up 20-11. Rucker led Northern Iowa with 14 points and Abby Gerrits scored 13 off the bench.

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are in their second successive AFC title game. They got there with a stunning comeback from a 24-0 hole. Patrick Mahomes threw for four touchdowns in the second quarter in the 51-31 victory. Kansas City will host Tennessee for the AFC championship and a trip to the Super Bowl. The Chiefs have not been there since winning the 1971 game. The Titans lost their only Super Bowl appearance in 2000. The NFC title game will have San Francisco hosting Green Bay in what has been a classic playoff rivalry.

UNDATED (AP) — So goes a wild weekend of historic offensive performances by Derrick Henry and nearly every Kansas City Chief. It was spiced by some timely defense from all the winners. They gave us the answers to the makeup of the NFL’s Final Four. Which brings along a whole lot of questions. The NFC, following a wild-card weekend in which both wild cards won, settled down to top-seeded San Francisco and No. 2 Green Bay reaching the championship game. It’s a classic rivalry that will resume next Sunday when the Niners host the Packers.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — No. 23 Wichita State blew a nine-point lead in the final minute of regulation, but came back to beat UConn 89-86 in two overtimes. Jaime Echenique led four Wichita State players in double figures with 19 points before fouling out. Dexter Dennis and Erik Stevenson each scored 16 for the Shockers, who have won nine straight games.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Chelsea Dungee scored a season-high 38 points, Taylah Thomas added a double-double and No. 21 Arkansas overcame a slow start to defeat Missouri 90-73. The Tigers scored the first six points of the game and had a 10-point lead in the first quarter, which ended with the visitors on top 22-14. Dungee had 10 points in the second quarter, including the last eight, and had 17 at the break, when the Razorbacks led 34-30. Thomas scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Hayley Frank led the Tigers with 19 points. There were 54 fouls in the game and the teams combined to shoot 56 free throws.

Houston visits Kansas City, Green Bay hosts Seattle

Sports

January 12th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

UNDATED (AP) — Two more NFL divisional-round playoff games are on tap today (Sunday). First, the Houston Texans visit the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch of a Week 6 game won by the Texans. (Pre-game 1-p.m. on KJAN. Kick-off at 2:05-p.m.)

Houston is trying to reach the AFC championship game for the first time. The Chiefs are trying to make it back a year after falling to the Patriots in overtime. The Chiefs selected quarterback Patrick Mahomes over Deshaun Watson in the NFL draft a couple of years ago. Two picks later, the Texans made Watson their quarterback.

In the second game, the Seattle Seahawks look to cure their road woes at Lambeau Field when they travel to Green Bay. It will be the sixth consecutive season these two teams have played each other either in the regular season and or the postseason. Each team has won three contests at home. Seattle quarterback Russell Williams is 0-3 as a starter at Lambeau Field.

This will be the first playoff game in three years for Green Bay’s 36-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who won his first Super Bowl nearly a decade ago.

TOPEKA, Kansas – The No. 2-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcat men’s basketball team overcame a four-point deficit down the stretch and secured a 73-68 road win over the Washburn Ichabods on Saturday at Lee Arena.

Northwest’s victory improves the Bearcats to 15-1 overall and 5-1 in MIAA play, while Washburn falls to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in league action.

Junior Ryan Hawkins put the ‘Cats on his shoulders with a 32-point scoring barrage on only 18 shots from the field. Hawkins was 11-of-18 shooting and was 3-of-7 from three-point range. Hawkins drained seven of his eight free throw attempts. Hawkins also did damage on the defensive end with five steals and four rebounds.

Even with Hawkins’s scoring heroics the Bearcats had to overcome a 62-58 Washburn lead with 5:58 to play. Freshman Luke Waters hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to two with 5:21 to left. Diego Bernard evened the game at 62-62 on a driving layup but missed the ensuing free throw to leave it level.

Washburn’s Jalen Lewis sank three free throws after getting fouled by Northwest’s Trevor Hudgins with 3:57 to play that gave the Ichabods a 65-62 advantage.

Hawkins hit a left-handed layup to trim the lead to one with 3:38. Hawkins then drew a foul and sank two free throws to give the Bearcats the lead they would not relinquish with 2:33 on the clock.

Hudgins buried two free throws with 1:54 to play to put Northwest up 68-65. Bernard made two more at the charity stripe with 47 seconds left to put Northwest up five, 70-65.

After a Bernard turnover, Washburn’s Lewis knocked in a three-pointer with 23 ticks left to cut the Northwest lead to two at 70-68. Hudgins then made three of four at the line to close out the scoring and a Northwest win, 73-68.
