Northern Iowa extends home streak, tops Indiana State 68-60

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – Austin Phyfe tallied 13 points and 12 rebounds to lift Northern Iowa to a 68-60 win over Indiana State for the Panthers’ ninth consecutive home victory. Trae Berhow had 16 points and eight rebounds for Northern Iowa and AJ Green added 15 points.

Robbins scores 20 as Drake holds off Loyola-Chicago, 65-62

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Liam Robbins scored 20 points, many on key buckets, as Drake stretched its home win streak to nine games, defeating Loyola-Chicago 65-62. The Bulldogs took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Robbins with 15:48 remaining. Drake led 43-41 at the time and a dunk by Robbins eight minutes later gave the Bulldogs a 58-48 lead. A jumper by Robbins gave the Bulldogs a 65-60 lead with 1:27 to go and the Bulldogs held on despite not scoring in the final minute. Tate Hall had 15 points for the Ramblers and Cameron Krutwig added 14 points and four assists.

Nebraska denies road-weary Iowa’s comeback bid, 76-70

LINCOLN, Nebraska (AP) – Thorir Thorbjarnarson scored 17 points and Nebraska turned back a second-half Iowa comeback to down the Hawkeyes 76-70. Nebraska led by seven at the half, but saw Iowa come back to take its only lead of the game on Joe Weiskamp’s 3-pointer that made the score 51-50 with 12:40 remaining.

Cyclones try to recapture home magic as No. 3 Kansas looms

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State hosts No. 3 Kansas on Wednesday night looking to recapture some of its home magic. The Cyclones lost four of their last five home games last season and have dropped two already this year. They have won 84 percent of their home games over the past nine years. Iowa State coach Steve Prohm says he plans to mix and match his four-guard sets and two-forward lineups. He is also worried about stopping Kansas big man Udoka Azubuike and Jayhawks guard Devon Dotson.

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship coming up in Atlantic

The annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship will be held on Wednesday, January 15th at 2:00pm. The contest is open to all boys and girls aged 9 thru 14 as of 1-1-2020. The 9-10-11 year-old participants will shoot at the Nishna Valley Family YMCA and the 12-13-14 year-old competitors will shoot at the Atlantic Middle School Gym.

Entry forms are available at the Nishna Valley YMCA and the Atlantic Middle School Principal’s office. Entry forms need to be turned in before January 13th.

All students are welcome, non-basketball shooters have won the contest in the past.

Haliburton named Big 12 Player of the Week

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State guard Tyrese Haliburton has been named Big 12 Player of the Week after posting the sixth triple-double in school history. It is the second honor he has earned this season.

Haliburton missed the Cyclones’ midweek game before recording his triple-double in the Big 12 opener at TCU. The Oshkosh, Wisconsin native had 22 points to go along with a career-high 12 rebounds and 10 assists against the Horned Frogs. He also had three steals in the overtime loss to TCU.

It was the 17th triple-double all-time in the Big 12 and the first since 2017.

The Cyclones host Kansas on Wednesday night.

• Averaged 24.0 points, 5.5 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game with a .708 field-goal percentage in leading Iowa to conference wins over Illinois and at Northwestern last week

• Scored a career-high 33 points (including 11-of-14 field goals and 9-of-9 free throws) in 25 minutes of Dec. 31 win over Illinois

• Added 15 points and seven assists in Sunday’s win at Northwestern, giving her 602 career assists and making her the 12th women’s basketball student in Big Ten history to reach to 600-assist milestone

ISU’s Espenmiller-McGraw earns Freshman of the Week honor from Big 12

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State freshman Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career after helping Iowa State go 2-0 on the week, the league announced Monday.

Espenmiller-McGraw tallied a career-high 17 points on a 7-of-9 shooting performance at Texas Tech. Espenmiller-McGraw was stellar as she connected on three shots from long range, helping Iowa State hand Texas Tech its first loss of the season.

Espenmiller-McGraw also helped the Cyclones close their nonconference slate with a win after playing 35 minutes and recording the best plus-minus on the team at +17.
