Lazard and Bulaga set for Green Bay playoff opener

Sports

January 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa/Learfield) — Former Iowa State star Allen Lazard will make his playoff debut Sunday night when the Green Bay Packers host the Seattle Seahawks in NFC Divisional Round. Lazard is trying to approach it like a regular season game.

Lazard had 35 catches, including three touchdowns, during the regular season.

After missing out the last two seasons Green Bay tackle and former Iowa standout Bryan Bulaga says it is great to be back in the playoffs.

The Packers are the two seed after a 13-3 regular season.

Iowa prepares to host No. 12 Maryland tonight (Friday night)

Sports

January 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa/Learfield) — Iowa is expected to be without leading three point shooter CJ Fredrick for tonight’s (Friday night’s) game against 12th ranked Maryland. Fredrick missed this week’s loss at Nebraska with a foot injury, becoming the third Hawkeye starter to go down. Fredrick’s injury means Iowa’s thin roster will need to log even more minutes.

Iowa is coming off a game in which it made only four of 33 from three point range. The Hawk’s two-post lineup will go up against a Maryland team that has primarily a four guard lineup. Maryland coach Mark Turgeon has been happy with his team’s progress. The Terrapins are 13-2 but they are 0-2 on the road.

Listen for the game beginning at 5-p.m., on KJAN, with the tip-off from Iowa City at 6-p.m.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs picked Patrick Mahomes over Deshaun Watson in the NFL draft a couple of years ago and the decision has worked out quite well for them. And it’s one that has worked out well for the Houston Texans, too. They chose Watson a mere two picks later. Now, two of the league’s bright young quarterbacks will share the field on Sunday when the Texans visit the Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs. It’s a rematch of a Week 6 game won by the Texans in comeback fashion.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired first baseman-designated hitter Jose Martinez from St. Louis in a trade that sends minor league pitching prospect Matthew Liberatore to the Cardinals. In addition to addressing the need for a right-handed bat, the Rays receive outfielder Randy Arozarena and a Compensation Round A draft pick in the four-player deal. Liberatore is a 20-year-old left-hander who was the 16th overall pick in the June 2018 draft. The Cardinals also receive minor league catcher Edgardo Rodriguez and a Compensation Round B draft pick.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The NFL playoffs and the upcoming Super Bowl are front and center for many football fans. But once the big game happens in February, a new thing to bet on will be just around the corner: the XFL. The upstart football league begins play Feb. 8 and several states have already authorized wagering on its games. Sports books expect the amount of betting to be modest, but say the public’s appetite for betting on football is well-established.

UNDATED (AP) — One of the best games in the Big Ten this weekend has Rutgers playing at Illinois on Saturday. Both teams were picked in the bottom half of the Big Ten in the preseason. Both are surprises. Rutgers (12-3, 3-1) has won six straight and is one game behind league-leading Michigan State. The Scarlet Knights are out to their best 15-game start since the 1975-76 team went undefeated in the regular season. Illinois (11-5, 3-2) is 1 1/2 games out of first place following its 71-70 win at Wisconsin on Wednesday.

Iowa women hold off No. 17 Maryland 66-61

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Kathleen Doyle scored 21 points, Makenzie Meyer had 20 points and Iowa beat No. 17 Maryland 66-61. Alexis Sevillian added 15 points and made a 3-pointer and a jumper back-to-back in the final 3 1/2 minutes to help the Hawkeyes (12-3, 3-1 Big Ten) pull away.

The Hawkeyes led by 14 in the second quarter, but the Terrapins (11-4, 2-2) erased the deficit and led 44-41 after an 11-0 run in the third quarter. Iowa retook the lead before the end of the quarter and never trailed in the fourth. Kaila Charles had 23 points and 18 rebounds for the Terrapins.

Riverside gets road win over Griswold

Sports

January 9th, 2020 by admin

The Riverside Bulldogs picked up their second win of the boys hoops season on Thursday night with a 52-30 win over the Griswold Tigers. The Bulldogs took advantage of some outside looks against the Griswold zone and shot well enough to make the difference. Riverside connected on 6 threes in the opening half and took a 26-15 lead into the break. Riverside Head Coach Nicholas Kroon felt they attacked the zone well from outside.

Drake Woods knocked down 3 of those triples in the first half and added two more in the third quarter to help the Bulldogs push away. The Bulldogs expanded the lead to 18 by the end of the third and then sealed the game with 9-10 shooting from the foul line in the 4th quarter. The Bulldogs did a nice job taking care of the ball and Coach Kroon said that was a huge difference from other games they didn’t have success in.

Woods finished with 16 points to lead all-scorers in the game. Riverside also got 12 from Brogan Allensworth who had an active night rebounding and blocking some shots as well. The Bulldogs improve to 2-7 on the season and will next host Logan-Magnolia on Friday night.

Griswold got 15 points from Jayden Amend, but no other Tiger finished in double-figures. The Tigers are still searching for their first win and fall to 0-9 on the year. They will play host to Essex on Friday night, a game you can see on Griz Tiger Vision in the KJAN Video Network.
