Iowa’s Garza enters draft, keeps college eligibility for now

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa All-America center Luka Garza is entering the NBA draft process without an agent so he can maintain his college eligibility. Garza was runner-up to Dayton’s Obi Toppin for Associated Press national player of the year after becoming the first Big Ten player to average at least 26 points per game in conference play since Purdue’s Glenn Robinson in 1994. Garza scored 20 or more in a school-record 16 straight Big Ten games. Coach Fran McCaffery says he supports Garza’s decision. Garza must withdrawal from the draft by May 29 to remain eligible at Iowa.

Hawkins reflects on great season cut short for Bearcats

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats men’s basketball team was poised to make a run at back-to-back National Championships before the NCAA Division II Tournament was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Atlantic alum Ryan Hawkins was helping to lead the charge. Hawkins averaged 22.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 2.1 steals. and 0.8 blocks per game this season. The Bearcats were 31-1 on the year and Hawkins said the team had a great attitude.

Hawkins said the team was at practice getting ready to host the NCAA Regional when they got the news that the tournament was cancelled.

Hawkins said he really feels for the seniors that lost out on their chance to compete in the tournament.

Ryan won the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year honor for the 2nd straight season and was a finalist for the Bevo Francis Award that honors the top small college basketball player in the country. He feels like the comfort level his teammates have developed with each other has allowed him to be a better player.

Hawkins will head into his Senior season with the Bearcats and hopes to earn another chance at competing for another National Championship.

US Olympic swimming trials reset for June 2021 in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The U.S. Olympic swimming trials have been rescheduled for June of 2021 in Omaha, Nebraska. USA Swimming announced the dates Friday, less than three weeks after the Tokyo Olympics were postponed until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The trials were initially scheduled for this June in a temporary pool at the CHI Health Center Omaha. The arena in downtown Omaha will host the event for the fourth straight quadrennial. The trials are the sole qualifier for U.S. Olympic team. The top two finishers in each event earn a trip to Tokyo.

(Radio Iowa) — Iowa athletic director Gary Barta says they will be able to cover financial losses with reserves between now and the end of the fiscal year on June 30th. Barta says the department expects to lose several million dollars due to the loss of the Big Ten and NCAA basketball tournaments.

Barta says they are looking at options for the next fiscal year

Barta says they will be looking at possible pay cuts in the future.

Barta says they will be looking at several ways to save money.

Iowa State women’s basketball coach Bill Fennelly looks back at season

Iowa State women’s basketball coach Bill Fennelly says his team is focusing on what it accomplished and not what was lost with the cancellation of the post season. The Cyclones were 18-11 and finished the regular season on a three game winning streak.

Iowa State’s final game was a stunning upset of second ranked and defending national champion Baylor.

Wartburg and Iowa State schedule wrestling dual

(Radio Iowa) — Wartburg and Iowa State will square-off for the first time in a quarter century when the 2020-21 college wrestling gets underway. The dual meet between the 14-time Division III national champion Knights and eight-time Division I national champion Cyclones is scheduled for November 6th at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

The season-opener will be only the third meeting in history between the teams and the first since Iowa State’s 23-16 win at Wartburg in 1996, the year the Knights won their first national title in program history. Wartburg finished the 2019-20 campaign with a 16-1 overall record and Iowa State finished second at the Big 12 Championships. The Knights are 12-11-1 all-time against Division I competition.

The last time Wartburg faced a D-I opponent was in 2011, when the Knights dropped a 17-16 tiebreaker at Wisconsin.

AP source: Chiefs bring back CB Breeland on 1-year deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back cornerback Bashaud Breeland on a one-year deal that could be worth up to $4.5 million, according to a person familiar with the contract. The agreement helps alleviate one of the Super Bowl champions’ biggest concerns ahead of the NFL draft. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the deal had not been announced. Breeland helped the Chiefs win their first championship in five decades last season before joining cornerbacks Kendall Fuller and Morris Claiborne in free agency. Fuller has since signed with Washington.

Iowa Speedway to host IndyCar twinbill

(Radio Iowa) — The Iowa Speedway will be hosting an IndyCar Series doubleheader in July as part of a revamped scheduled. The July 17th and 18th races will be under the lights. Mark Miles is president of Penske Entertainment which operates the series.

The Iowa Speedway is one of two venues to be awarded two racers and Miles calls it an efficient way to rework the schedule.

Miles says all sports are working with their broadcast partners in hopes of putting together a new schedule.

The first IndyCar race is scheduled for June sixth at Texas and Miles says there are no plans to run races without fans.
