Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — A doubleheader between the St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers this week is being postponed to allow more time for additional COVID-19 testing. MLB opted to postpone Thursday’s doubleheader to continue additional testing while players and staff are quarantined before the team returns to play. More details about the Cardinals’ resumption of play will be announced later this week. The Cardinals had a series against Pittsburgh set to start on Monday postponed after a weekend series against the Cubs was scrapped due to three positive coronavirus tests.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes might be having the best year of anyone. The Chiefs quarterback began it by leading his team to its first Super Bowl title in 50 years. He signed a record-setting contract extension that could pay him a half-billion dollars. He even bought a stake in the Kansas City Royals. But with the Chiefs heading into the thick of training camp, Mahomes told The Associated Press in a wide-ranging interview that his focus remains squarely on football, even as he lends support to the Black Lives Matter movement and spearheads a voter registration drive in his own community.

UNDATED (AP) — The Mountain West has become the second FBS conference to postpone its football season due to the coronavirus pandemic, punting on all fall sports with an eye toward playing in the spring. The 12-team Mountain West joins the Mid-American Conference as leagues from the highest tier of NCAA Division I football to bail on the fall season and hope to make a go of it in the spring. The Mountain West features Boise State, Air Force and San Diego State, each of which were ranked at some point last year.

UNDATED (AP) — President Donald Trump joined a U.S. senator and a number of coaches hoping to save the college football season from a pandemic-forced shutdown. There was speculation the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences might call off their fall seasons. The Mountain West did just that, postponing until spring. Old Dominion canceled fall sports, too, and became the first school in the Football Bowl Subdivison to break from its league in doing so. The rest of Conference USA is going forward with plans to play. The powerful Southeastern Conference made clear it was not yet ready to shutter its fall season.

UNDATED (AP) — College football players from across the country are uniting. They want to save a season threatened by the pandemic and make sure they won’t be left out of the big decisions anymore. After Clemson star Trevor Lawrence sparked a movement by tweeting “we want to play,” he was contacted by a player activist from Michigan. In a couple hours, two hashtags — WeWantToPlay and WeAreUnited — merged. Not only do the players want to play, but they want to create a players association for college football.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets hurler Marcus Stroman has opted out of the rest of the season due to concerns over the pandemic. Stroman was recovering from a torn calf muscle and was in line to possibly make his season debut next week against the Marlins in Miami. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the season and is the second Met to opt out of the season, joining outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EH’-nehs SEHS’-peh-dehs).

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks’ ace Madison Bumgarner has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a mid-back strain. The left-hander allowed six runs on five hits in two innings against the Padres on Sunday to remain winless since signing a five-year, $85 million deal. The four-time All-Star has a 9.35 ERA after Sunday’s start.

Temporary seating for ‘Field of Dreams’ game being removed

News, Sports

August 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The stadium seating Major League Baseball set up at the field it built near the Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville is coming down – for now. Last week, crews began removing the temporary stands that had been installed for an August 13th match-up between the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals. Last week, Major League Baseball announced the game will be postponed until 2021. Roman Weinberg, manager of The Field of Dreams Movie Site, says they knew rescheduling the game was a possibility since the pandemic began in early March.

Weinberg says the plan is to rebuild the stadium, starting next spring, for next year’s game.

Murray Cook of BrightView, the company Major League Baseball hired for the stadium work, told the Dubuque Telegraph Herald much of what was used to construct the stadium was rented and it’d be too expensive to keep it all intact until next year. Meanwhile, in downtown Dyersville, a new museum honoring the Field of Dreams has just opened. It’s called the “If You Build It Exhibit” and highlights the making of the 1989 film. Weinberg was on hand for the museum’s ribbon cutting.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The entire three-game series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis that was set to begin tonight (Monday night) at Busch Stadium, has been postponed while the Cardinals deal with a COVID-19 outbreak. There have now been 27 games postponed by Major League Baseball because of coronavirus concerns. The Cardinals have not played since July 30 and have had 13 games scrapped. Miami and Philadelphia each had seven games postponed earlier and have returned to the field since the disruptions. MLB said Sunday night that the league and the Cardinals “believe it is prudent to conduct additional testing while players and staff are quarantined before the team returns to play.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Dozier hit a two-run single in his first at-bat since testing positive for COVID-19, prized prospect Brady Singer earned his first major league win and the Kansas City Royals swept the Minnesota Twins 4-2. The Royals won their fourth in a row overall. The Twins lost all three at Kauffman Stadium and have dropped four straight. Dozier, who hit 26 home runs last year and tied for the big league lead with 10 triples, hadn’t played this season while recovering from the virus. He quickly delivered, putting the Royals ahead 2-0 in the first inning.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — American Collin Morikawa has become a first-time major champion by winning at San Francisco’s Harding Park. The 23-year-old closed with a 6-under 64 to win the PGA Championship by two strokes over Paul Casey and third-round leader Dustin Johnson. Morikawa was tied with Casey before an eagle on the par-4 16. He closed with consecutive pars for a 13 under total.

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Kevin Harvick has completed a weekend sweep of NASCAR’s Cup races at Michigan International Speedway. Harvick held off Denny Hamlin over the final laps and finished 0.09 ahead to become the first driver to win Cup races on consecutive days since Richard Petty in 1971. Harvick also took the first two stages in Saturday’s victory before earning the second state Sunday.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Joe Pavelski tied it with 31.4 seconds left in the third period, Anton Khudobin stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout and the Dallas Stars beat the St. Louis Blues 2-1 in round-robin play to clinch the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. Denis Gurianov scored the only goal of the shootout. Dallas will face the Calgary Flames in the first round of the playoffs. Defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis went winless in the round robin and will next face the Vancouver Canucks.

Dr. Matt Weresh

Dr. Matt Weresh came out on top of the 2020 Tournament of Champions at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club on Sunday,  holding on to his two-day lead and eventually winning by two strokes. Weresh finished the weekend at +1, 208 to take his third title at the T of C. He previously won back to back titles in 2004 and 2005.

Andrew Martin was on even par pace for much of the final day but three bogeys on the back nine landed him with a 72. He finished third overall with a +5, 212 total.
