SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Marcus Weymiller ran 25 times for 131 yards and a touchdown and Northern Iowa scored the first 19 points on its way to a 25-10 win over Missouri State on Saturday.

Weymiller scored for the Panthers (6-4, 5-2 Missouri Valley) on a 2-yard run to cap the game’s opening drive and Sam Drysdale missed the point-after attempt to leave it at 6-0. Drysdale followed with a pair of field goals and Elijah Campbell returned an interception 35 yards to make it 19-0 with 4:15 left in the second quarter.

The Bears (3-7, 2-5) scored their only touchdown on Jason Randall’s 6-yard run with 54 seconds left in the half, but Drysdale kicked his third field goal of the second quarter with 12 seconds left to make it 22-7 at the half.

Zach Drake’s field goal cut the deficit to 22-10 in the third quarter and Drysdale made his fourth field-goal attempt to cap the scoring in the fourth.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Receiver Kendric Pryor scored twice, and No. 6 Wisconsin relied on stifling defense to overcome four turnovers and Iowa cornerback Josh Jackson’s two touchdowns in a 38-14 win Saturday over the Hawkeyes. The win allowed the Badgers (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten, CFP No. 8) to clinch a trip to the league conference title game as West champions.

The Hawkeyes (6-4, 3-4, CFP No. 20) were held to 66 total yards and five first downs, including just 15 yards and one first down in the first half.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Graham Woodward made all five of his 3-pointers and scored 20 points to help Drake beat Division III Coe College 101-54 on Saturday in a season opener for the Bulldogs. It was the first victory under first-year head coach Niko Medved, who was officially named to the helm on March 26. The Minnesota native was the well-respected head coach at Furman. Reed Timmer added 16 points as six Drake players scored in double figures. Timmer entered his senior season already ranked in the top 10 in career scoring at Drake with more than 1,300 career points.

Drake led 50-25 at halftime and cruised in the second half. The Bulldogs shot 59 percent from the field, including 16 of 28 from 3-point range. Seven players for Drake hit a 3-pointer, with three apiece from De’Antae McMurray and Noah Thomas. Tommy Hook led Coe College with 12 points. The Kohawks played the game as an exhibition.

No. 12 Oklahoma State rallies past No. 24 Cyclones 49-42

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Mason Rudolph threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns — including two in the final 5:55 — and 12th-ranked Oklahoma State rallied to beat No. 24 Iowa State 49-42 on Saturday and keep its Big 12 title game hopes alive.

Justice Hill had 134 yards and three TD runs for the Cowboys (8-2, 5-2 Big 12, No. 15 CFP), who remain in a tie for second place in the league with two games to go. The top two finishers in the Big 12 will meet in the championship game in Arlington, Texas, on Dec. 2.

But even if neither the Cyclones nor Cowboys make it to Jerry World, they still gave the Big 12 a game few in the league will ever forget. Rudolph found Marcell Ateman for a 30-yard TD pass, and Hill’s two-point conversion run tied the game at 42 with 5:55 left. The Cowboys jumped ahead 49-42 just two minutes later as Rudolph found Dillon Stoner for a 19-yard touchdown reception.

The Cyclones got inside Oklahoma State’s 3-yard line with 32 seconds left, but Zeb Noland threw an interception to A.J. Green to end the game. Quarterback-linebacker Joel Lanning had a rushing and passing TD for Iowa State (6-4, 4-3). He connected with Allen Lazard on a 22-yard TD strike with 14:13 left — a pass Lazard caught with one hand while falling down.

David Montgomery made it 42-34 on a subsequent 4-yard run, but Iowa State’s highly-rated defense faltered down the stretch. Montgomery had 105 yards and three TDs for the Cyclones.

Iowa State plays at Baylor next Saturday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jail records show that Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Roy Miller has been arrested in Florida on a domestic battery charge. The records show Miller was jailed shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. There are no details immediately available about the alleged battery or who was involved. The records do show that it involved a minor injury.

Court records show Miller has an initial appearance before a judge later Saturday. The records do not show whether he has a lawyer. Miller, 30, played for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2013 to 2017, when he signed with the Chiefs. The 6-foot-1, 320-pound lineman was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009 out of the University of Texas.

Missouri wins despite Porter’s injury

Sports

November 11th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — The highly anticipated debut of Michael Porter Jr. was brief. The Missouri Tigers did just fine without him Friday night in a 74-59 victory over Iowa State in the season opener. Porter, considered one of the top two recruits in the nation, played just two minutes and scored two points before taking a seat on the bench with an ice pack on his left hip. A team spokesman said he “tweaked” the hip and was held out for the rest of the game as a precaution.

Kevin Puryear led Missouri with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting.Nick Weiler-Babb led the Cyclones with 14 points, and Zoran Talley Jr. added 11.

After qualifying for the NCAA Tournament six straight years, the Cyclones are rebuilding with just one player — sophomore forward Solomon Young. ISU was picked ninth out of 10 teams in the Big 12 preseason coaches’ poll.

Iowa State makes its home debut Monday against Milwaukee.

Hawkeyes drill Chicago State 95-62 in opener

Sports

November 11th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Luka Garza scored 16 points in his debut, Isaiah Moss added 14 points and Iowa pounded Chicago State 95-62 on Friday night. Tyler Cook and Jordan Bohannon added 12 points apiece for the Hawkeyes, who shot 59.6 percent in their first game without Peter Jok, the Big Ten’s leading scorer a year ago.

Iowa closed out the first half on a 12-2 run to jump ahead 52-27 at halftime. The Hawkeyes played 11 guys in the first half — with eight of them logging at least five minutes — and went 7 of 14 from 3-point range. Cook’s alley-oop dunk pushed that lead to 68-37 early in the second half, and coach Fran McCaffery went to the bench after that.

Iowa freshman guard Connor McCaffery, the coach’s son, sprained his ankle in practice this week and spent his college debut in street clothes. McCaffery made a last-minute decision not to redshirt after guard Christian Williams abruptly decided to transfer and is expected to be in Iowa’s rotation. Nicholas Baer (broken pinky finger) also sat out the opener. He’s expected to miss about a month.

The Hawkeyes struggled at times on defense, especially in transition in the first half. That’s to be expected of a team filled largely with underclassmen. But playing time for a bench that could end up being seven players deep will likely be doled out to the guys most committed to playing strong defense.

Iowa hosts Alabama State on Sunday.
