(From Cyclones.com) AMES, Iowa – Iowa State freshman big man Cameron Lard was named the Big 12’s Co-Newcomer of the Week after averaging 17.0 points, 7.5 Rebounds and 3.0 blocks as the Cyclones went 1-1 on the week.

Lard had perhaps the finest performance of his debut season in Cardinal & Gold on Saturday, helping the Cyclones to a 70-52 upset of No. 8 Texas Tech at Hilton Coliseum. The native of Natchitoches, La., scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, to go with three blocks in the victory. He shot 9-of-11 from the field, and is shooting 68.3 percent in his last four games.

Lard’s three blocked shots brought his season total to 35, already the third-best freshman total in school history.

For the season, Lard is averaging 12.0 points and 7.0 rebounds to rank second on the team. The Cyclones are back in action tonight, set to take on Texas in Austin at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Sean Lloyd Jr., scored 15 points with six rebounds and three steals and Kavion Pippen had a double-double and Southern Illinois beat Northern Iowa 64-53 on Sunday.

Klint Carlson made a jumper with 16:10 left to shave Northern Iowa’s deficit to 30-27 before an 11-5 Salukis run extended their lead to nine. Tywhon Pickford’s 3-point play reduced the deficit to six, but Southern Illinois (12-9, 4-4 Missouri Valley) took advantage of the Panthers’ four-minute scoring drought with a 9-0 run and led 50-35 with 7:41 to go.

Northern Iowa (10-10, 2-6) went on an 8-0 run to narrow the deficit to 54-46 with 3:21 left, but the Salukis shut the door on the Panthers after calling a timeout and scored six straight to seal the win.

Pippen scored 11 points with 11 rebounds and Marcus Bartley and Armon Fletcher each scored 12 as the Salukis made half their 52 shots. Fletcher also grabbed nine rebounds and had four steals.

Wyatt Lohaus led the Panthers with 15 points and Carlson and Isaiah Brown each scored 10.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kenisha Bell scored 21 points, Carlie Wagner added 15, combining for six free throws in the final 25 seconds, and Minnesota handed No. 20 Iowa its third straight loss 77-72 on Sunday.

Taiye Bello had 12 points, and Destiny Pitts and Bryanna Fernstrom 11 each for the Golden Gophers (16-5, 5-3 Big Ten Conference). Bell also had 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Kathleen Doyle had 21 points for Iowa (15-5, 3-4) and Megan Gustafson had 20 and 10 rebounds.

Doyle’s jumper with 2:53 to play capped a 9-0 run and gave Iowa its last lead, 67-66. Bell followed with two free throws. Doyle’s 3 with 19 seconds left made it a one-point game but Bell and Wagner secured the win from the line in the last nine seconds.

Iowa finished 2 of 14 from 3-point range and is now 5 of 47 during the losing streak.

Colfax-Mingo Classic

The Treynor Cardinals wrestling team went 3-2 at the Colfax-Mingo Classic on Saturday.

The Cardinals beat Ankeny Centennial (48-24), Lynnville-Sully (66-18) and North Mahaska (60-21) while losing to Knoxville (48-33) and Colfax-Mingo (51-26).

Abraham Lincoln went 4-1. The Lynx beat Colfax-Mingo (38-37), HLV (62-6), Des Moines North-Hoover (46-21) and Newton (51-30).  They lost to Knoxville by a 45-28 final.

AHSTW had three champions: Gabe Pauley (170), Gavyn Fischer (195), and Brady Canada (220).

Underwood’s Blake Thomsen (120), Alex Thomsen (126), Logan James (132) and Kyler Rodenburg (145) all won titles as well.

The Exira-EHK Spartans girls basketball team held serve on their home floor Saturday evening with a 57-52 win over the Kuemper Catholic Knights.  The Spartans set the tone early with their tough defense and raced out to a 16-5 early lead and led by 5 at 18-13 at the end of the 1st. The Spartans pushed that advantage to 13 by halftime 35-22. Kuemper Catholic clawed their way back within 4 by the end of the third. The Knights would take a one point lead midway through the fourth quarter at 50-49. That was their first lead since a 3-2 advantage early in the game. The Spartans responded immediately as freshman Tatum Grubbs drove to the hoop and got fouled. She stepped up and hit the free throws to put the Spartans back ahead by one and they wouldn’t trail again.

Free throws were big in sealing the victory as the Spartans made 11-12 in the fourth quarter and 17-23 for the game. Sophia Peppers went 8 of 8 at the stripe in the fourth quarter and finished as the leading scorer with 19 points. Grubbs finished with 12 and Kealey Nelson had 11. The Spartans improved to 14-1 and have a big game at CAM next on Tuesday night.

The Knights were led by 17 points from Aimee Adams and 12 from Kara Peter. The Knights are now 11-5 and will host Harlan next Friday.

The Atlantic-CAM wrestling team took a third place finish at the John J Harris Invitational that wrapped up Saturday in Corning. The Trojans were edged out by just a point and a half by Creston Orient-Macksburg for that second spot 165 to 163.5. Missouri Valley was the runaway team champion with 230.5 points.

The Trojans had two champions and two runner-up finishers at the tourney. Kole Hansen took the title at 126 pounds and John McConkey was a winner at 285. Joe Weaver was a runner-up at 106 and Chase McLaren was 2nd at 132.  John McConkey also earned his 100th career pin during the day, putting him among elite company in Iowa High School Wrestling history.

The Trojans also earned the Sportsmanship award at the tournament.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Reed Timmer scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half and Drake survived miserable 3-point shooting to beat Missouri State 61-58 on Saturday. The victory left the Bulldogs (12-9, 6-2) alone atop the Missouri Valley Conference with Loyola of Chicago (5-1) playing Sunday.

The Bulldogs were only 3 of 26 from the arc. But Timmer broke the final tie with two free throws with six minutes left then added a layup and four more free throws in the final minute.

With Drake leading 60-58, the Bulldogs’ C.J. Rivers missed two free throws with nine seconds left but J.T. Miller missed a short jumper and Nick McGlynn, who had two big blocks late, grabbed the rebound.

Drake made its first 17 free throws until Rivers’ misses while the Bears were 5 of 7. Jarrid Rhodes and Jarred Dixon scored 15 points each for Missouri State (15-6, 5-3).

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Cameron Lard scored 18 points and Iowa State cruised past No. 8 Texas Tech 70-52 on Saturday, its first win over a ranked opponent this season.

Nick Weiler-Babb, Lindell Wigginton and Donovan Jackson each added 13 points for the Cyclones (11-7, 2-5 Big 12), who handed the Red Raiders (15-4, 4-3) their second straight loss to an unranked opponent on the road.

The Cyclones jumped ahead 31-18 late in the first half. That seemed to wake up the Red Raiders, who responded with a run to go up 35-34.

But Iowa State answered with a 13-1 burst capped by Wigginton’s jumper that gave put the Cyclones ahead 47-36. Weiler-Babb’s desperation 3 to beat the shot clock made it 57-40 with 7:26 left. He buried another clock-beating 3 on a turnaround to push the lead to 69-49.

Zhaire Smith had 10 points for Tech, whose leading scorer Keenan Evans was held to seven points on 2 of 12 shooting.
