KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals manager Ned Yost was laid up in a hospital bed in November after a fall from a tree stand left him with major injuries. But he was walking through a ballroom on Friday as the club gathered for its annual fan festival. He was excited not only to be getting better, but also for a future that figures to be built around a young wave of prospects.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Free agent outfielder Lorenzo Cain and the Brewers finalized an $80 million, five-year contract, one day after Milwaukee acquired center fielder Christian Yelich from the Miami Marlins for four prospects. Cain is a former Brewers farmhand. The 31-year old spent the past seven seasons in Kansas City, where he was part of the core group that won the World Series in 2015. He hit .300 with 15 homers, 49 RBIs and 26 steals last season.

UNDATED (AP) — Parity in the Southeastern Conference and Big 12 has raised the stakes of the Big 12/SEC Challenge as teams in both leagues try to upgrade NCAA Tournament credentials. Tennessee coach Rick Barnes says he’d be disappointed if the SEC doesn’t get eight or nine NCAA Tournament bids. Kansas coach Bill Self believes all 10 Big 12 members remain in NCAA contention.

SPENCER, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say some student spectators at a predominantly white school in northwest Iowa greeted a visiting rival boys’ basketball team with racist chants. The chants and slogans at the Jan. 19 game at Spencer High School included some fans yelling that the Storm Lake players should “go back to where you came from.” Other students chanted, “USA.” Spencer Superintendent Terry Hemann says administrators have disciplined the Spencer students involved.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Scoring legend Jackie Stiles is returning to the bench as an assistant for Missouri State while awaiting cancer surgery. The Springfield News-Leader reports that Stiles will be back on the sidelines Friday after a nearly three-week absence. She is undergoing treatment for ocular melanoma and will undergo surgery Feb. 2. Stiles says her prognosis remains good.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri has fired longtime softball coach Ehren Earleywine. Athletic director Jim Sterk says the university has lost confidence in Earleywine’s ability to foster a “healthy environment” for players. The firing comes less than two weeks before the season-opener against San Jose State. The university says an interim coach is expected to be appointed next week.

January 26th, 2018 by admin

Scott Leonard had a career night in the post for the Atlantic Trojans boys basketball team on Friday night with 40 points and Atlantic beat Red Oak 76-52. The Trojans fed the ball to Leonard inside early and often and he kept delivering. The senior dropped in 21 of the Trojans 36 first half points and continued to pour in shots in the second half. Atlantic had a 23-10 lead by the end of the first quarter but their struggles to defend the perimeter kept them from pulling away in the first half. Red Oak had 5 threes in the first half and 9 by the end of the game.  Atlantic’s defense improved in the second half and they were able to put together a couple of runs to put the game out of reach.

Logan Reilly finished with 9 points while Chase Mullenix and Grant Podhajsky finished with 8 each. The Trojans improved to 9-7 with the win and next have a big road game at Harlan on Tuesday night.

Red Oak was led by Owen VonDielingen with 15 points and Garrett Rolenc with 12 points on four threes. The Tigers fall to 2-12 and will travel to Shenandoah on Tuesday.

Listen to a quick interview with Scott Leonard after the game below.

CAM sweeps hoops doubleheader from West Central Valley

Sports

January 26th, 2018 by admin

The CAM Cougars took two wins in a road basketball doubleheader at West Central Valley on Thursday night.

In the girls game the Cougars raced out to an early 17-6 lead and controlled the lead throughout. CAM got a big night from both Madison Gettler and Paige McAfee. Gettler finished with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. McAfee had 18 points and 6 rebounds. The Cougars improved to 13-4 with the win. West Central Valley was led by 14 points from Kennedy Lose and they fall to 7-10 on the season.

The boys game turned into a tight battle. CAM had an early 8 point lead but West Central Valley hit a pair of late threes in the first half to tie the game at 31 by the break. CAM was able to grab a three point lead by the end of the third quarter and then only led by one early in the fourth quarter. They then used a 10-2 run to secure a lead that they would hang onto for the win. Thomas Hensley overcame a slow shooting start and was very effective playing along the baseline in the second half. He finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 steals. Nic Holste dropped in 26 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for the Cougars. CAM improves to 11-4. West Central Valley’s leading scorer was Kaleb Badker with 19 points. The Wildcats are now 2-15.

Racist chants rain down on Iowa high school basketball team

News, Sports

January 26th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

SPENCER, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say some student spectators at a predominantly white school in northwest Iowa greeted a visiting rival boys’ basketball team with racist chants. The chants and slogans at the Jan. 19 game at Spencer High School included some fans yelling that the Storm Lake players should “go back where you came from.” Other students chanted, “USA.”

The school superintendents say the Storm Lake district has 2,400 students, and 84 percent are non-Caucasian. The Spencer district has 1,900 students and is predominantly white. Spencer Superintendent Terry Hemann told The Des Moines Register that administrators have disciplined the Spencer students involved, but he declined to provide details. A similar situation occurred during a football game last October between the rival schools.
