KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tim Anderson hit a two-run homer in the 12th inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2. Anderson’s blast off Burch Smith, the sixth Royals pitcher, landed just beyond the fence in left-center. Juan Minaya pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Hector Santiago, the eighth Chicago pitcher, picked up his second save in as many chances. The White Sox snapped a seven-game skid, one game short of their season-worst losing streak.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jameson Taillon won his fourth straight start, Jacob Stallings drove in three runs and the Pittsburgh Pirates slowed the Cardinals with a 4-3 victory that stopped the Cardinals’ three-game winning streak. St. Louis entered 34-18 under new manager Mike Shildt and with the most wins in the NL after the All-Star break. The Cardinals’ lead for the second NL wild card was cut to two games over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Taillon allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings, leaving with a 4-1 lead.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — By almost any measure, Patrick Mahomes aced his first test as the starting quarterback of the Chiefs. He threw a bunch of TD passes, led Kansas City to a road win against a division foe and, perhaps most importantly, was perfect where it mattered most: turnovers. He didn’t throw an interception in the 38-28 victory.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa State has found a replacement for its canceled opener. The Cyclones will host Incarnate Word on Dec. 1 unless Iowa State qualifies for the Big 12 title game or Incarnate Word reaches the FCS playoffs. Iowa State will pay Incarnate Word $300,000 for the game and provide use of a charter aircraft. Iowa State and South Dakota State played only a few minutes before their Sept. 1 game was called off because of lightning.

Iowa State to host Incarnate Word in makeup for lost opener

Iowa State has found a replacement for its canceled opener. The Cyclones said Wednesday they will host Incarnate Word on Dec. 1 — unless Iowa State qualifies for the Big 12 title game or Incarnate Word reaches the FCS playoffs. Iowa State will pay Incarnate Word $300,000 for the game and provide use of a charter aircraft for the team to fly to Iowa.

The Cyclones and South Dakota State played only a few minutes before their Sept. 1 game was called off because of lightning in and around Ames, Iowa. South Dakota State received its $425,000 payout, despite playing less than half of a quarter.

The added game will give Iowa State (0-1) an extra shot at the six wins needed for bowl eligibility, or perhaps a chance to improve their bowl position if they reach the minimum number of victories before then. The Cyclones host No. 5 Oklahoma on Saturday as a 17-point underdog.

Iowa State said fans who purchased tickets to the South Dakota State game will receive new tickets to the Dec. 1 game. Incarnate Word went 1-10 last season. The Cardinals play in the Southland Conference and are 0-2 so far in 2018, losing to New Mexico 62-30 and North Texas 58-16.

Ex-Nebraska player scheduled for trial in Iowa

September 12th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A former University of Nebraska football player is scheduled to go on trial next week on charges that he cashed fraudulent checks at casinos in western Iowa. Pottawattamie County court records say 45-year-old Reggie Baul has pleaded not guilty to one count of theft, 15 counts of forgery and one of ongoing criminal conduct. He’s accused of cashing the checks from April into July at the Ameristar and Horseshoe casinos in Council Bluffs. His trial is set to start Tuesday.

Baul joined the Husker football team as a receiver in 1993 and played through two national championship seasons. Baul has served jail time in Nebraska for drug and other crimes since.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brad Keller pitched seven strong innings to win for the fourth time in six starts, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 6-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. Whit Merrifield had two hits, two RBIs, and scored two runs for the Royals. He also stole two bases to increase his American League lead to 33 steals, including a league-best 12 of third base. Keller gave up one run and four hits and two walks while striking out six. He is 4-1 with a 1.62 ERA in his last six starts.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals rookie Tyler O’Neill hit a three-run homer during a six-run eighth inning, Marcell Ozuna drove in three and Miles Mikolas pitched seven solid innings to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-5. Mikolas gave up a run, five hits and a walk while striking out seven. He dropped his ERA to 2.99, and he got his first victory in five starts against the Pirates this season. Mikolas struck out five straight in one stretch, and the Cardinals improved to 21-8 in his starts.

UNDATED (AP) — It’s not unusual to see Iowa’s defense ahead of its offense in the middle of September. But the difference between those two units has likely never been starker. Through two games, Iowa has one of the best defense in America and one of the worst offenses. Coach Kirk Ferentz says there is always something to work out. The Hawkeyes host Northern Iowa on Saturday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — For all the progress Iowa State has made under coach Matt Campbell, the offensive line has long been a sore spot. The Cyclones showed in their opener that their rebuilt line has yet to find itself. Iowa State gained just 188 yards in a 13-3 loss to Iowa. No. 5 Oklahoma is up next for the Cyclones.
