Kris Murray to test NBA Draft process

Sports

April 14th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa sophomore forward Kris Murray announced on Friday that he has submitted papers for early entry to the 2022 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility.

Underclassmen have until June 1 to remain in or remove his name from the draft.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to play the game I love every day and to wear the Black and Gold,” said Murray. “My focus is being able to grow as a player in every way possible. The opportunity to get feedback and experience working out for NBA teams will help me become the best player I can possibly be and take my game to the next level. I have big plans for next year and this experience will help me do that. I appreciate everyone’s support.”

Murray (6-foot-8, 211 pounds) posted single season bests in every statistical category last season. He improved his scoring average by +9.1 points per game and rebounding average by 3.7 per outing. Murray was Iowa’s leading scorer (9.7 ppg) and rebounder (4.3 rpg) off the bench, which ranked fourth and third overall, respectively. His 31 blocks and 43 3-point field goals rank seventh and eighth most, respectively, by a Hawkeye sophomore. He ranked second on the squad in 3-point accuracy (.387, 43-of-11), blocked shots per game (0.9) and field goals made (124), third in offensive (1.6) and defensive (2.7) rebounds, and fourth in steals (0.8). He made at least one 3-pointer in a team-best 17 consecutive games (Jan. 22-March 13) and recorded multiple steals in 10 games and multiple blocks in nine contests.

“We fully support Kris using this opportunity to receive the feedback from NBA personnel through workouts and interviews,” said head coach Fran McCaffery. “Kris took great strides and really came into his own last season. He is going through this process with a professional approach, and we are excited to see his game grow to another level.”

Kris’ brother Keegan announced last month that he has declared for the 2022 NBA Draft.

Iowa punter Tory Taylor on spring drills

Sports

April 14th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa punter Tory Taylor is working on consistency this spring. The native of Melbourne, Australia, set a single season punting record for yardage and averaged better than 44 yards per punt last season. He is also one of the Hawkeyes’ most popular players

Taylor will be a 25-year-old junior when next season begins and he is taking on more of a leadership role among the specialists.

Taylor says his leadership is as much about off the field as on it.

Iowa special teams coordinator LeVar Woods says Taylor has been forced to adapt to his role as a leader.

Woods says Tylor is being looked on for leadership because of how well he has performed.

Atlantic Superintendent recommends ending wrestling sharing agreement with CAM

Sports

April 13th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(UPDATED) (Atlantic, Iowa) – In an effort to keep Atlantic in Class 2A where Wrestling is concerned, Atlantic School District Superintendent Steve Barber, Wednesday evening, recommended to the School Board, the District not renew its shared Wrestling program with the CAM School District. If the two were to continue the arrangement, it would mean a move from Class 2A to Class 3A in wrestling, and competition involving all metro-area schools.

Barber it all boils down to the District’s BEDS (Basic Educational Data Survey) results.

Mr. Barber said, looking at the current enrollment numbers in grades 6-through 8, the BEDS number will continue at this level, meaning the District would remain in the current classification for a number of years.

Steve Barber feels the larger schools have a competitive advantage over our kids, due to the number of students available and how many wrestlers change location, as wrestling is their number one priority to their education.

He said also, “I believe that our rivalry, not only in wrestling, exists with many of our Hawkeye 10 Schools where many are in the 2A classification. Obviously, in order to make this happen, we would have to severe our relationship with CAM,” he said. “By doing so, their 119 BED number would not count, and that would put us in 2A.”

Barber said the relationship Atlantic has had with CAM has been good, and severing the ties that bind the Districts “Is a tough decision.”

He said they have spoken with CAM and told them Atlantic will do what it can to help in the transition. He added Atlantic is “Still interested in partnering with girls wrestling and soccer, where out partnership does not put us in a competitive disadvantage.”

No action was taken on his recommendation, during the Board’s meeting.
