Cyclones come up short in shootout in Morgantown

Sports

October 30th, 2021 by admin

West Virginia got a brilliant performance from quarterback Jarret Doege and won a shootout over Iowa State 38-31 in Morgantown on Saturday. Doege went 30-46 for 370 yards and 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in the win.

The two teams traded blows most of the way and it was tied at 14 at the end of the first and 17 at halftime. The Cyclones grabbed a 7 point lead a couple of times in the third. The first time on a Jake Hummel 24 yard interception return touchdown and the second on a Brock Purdy 1 yard run.

The Mountaineers found paydirt twice in the fourth. Winston Wright Jr. caught a 22 yard pass from Doege to tie it up at 31. Then Leddie Brown gave WVU the lead with a 2 yard run with 9:25 left. Iowa State was driving to tie the game but a controversial fumble ruling for Breece Hall at the goaline wiped out a scoring chance. The Cyclones would get the ball back one last time but Purdy’s desperation heave into the endzone was knocked away.

Breece Hall had another strong game with 167 yards and a touchdown but it wasn’t quite enough. The Cyclones went just 2-12 on third down and struggled mightily on the defensive side with the absence of All-American linebacker Mike Rose who was out with an undisclosed injury. The Cyclones fall to 5-3 on the season and fall out of the race at the top of the Big 12.

West Virginia improved to 4-4 on the season and have won back to back games out of a bye week.

Next up for Iowa State is a home game against Texas next Saturday.

Wisconsin shut out the Hawkeyes in the first half and built a 20-0 lead before Iowa got on the board in the third. The Badgers Badger quarterback Graham Mertz had two touchdown runs and threw for another to Jake Ferguson.

Wisconsin improves to 5-3 on the season and moves in to a tie for first in the Big Ten West.

Iowa falls to 6-2 on the season and fall into a tie for that second place spot in the Big Ten West with Purdue and Wisconsin, the two teams they have fallen to in the past two games.
