Campbell named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior linebacker Jack Campbell has been named the Nagurski-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the Butkus-Fitzgerald Big Ten Linebacker of the Year to highlight Iowa’s defensive honors on the all-conference teams. The Big Ten announced the defensive awards Tuesday and will announce offensive awards Wednesday.

Campbell was named first-team All-Big Ten by both league head coaches and the voting media. Defensive teammates joining Campbell in earning first-team honors are defensive back Riley Moss (coaches) and defensive back Cooper DeJean (media). Moss was second team in the media voting and DeJean earned second-team honors from the coaches.

Two additional Hawkeyes earned second-team honors on both teams, including linebacker Seth Benson and defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness. Defensive end Joe Evans was a second-team selection by media, while earning honorable mention honors from coaches. Players earning honorable mention honors on both teams include defensive tackles Logan Lee and Noah Shannon and defensive back Kaevon Merriweather.

Campbell earned first-team honors for a second straight year after recording 118 tackles in 12 games. The Cedar Falls, Iowa, native is a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy and the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker. He is the third Hawkeye under Ferentz to be named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, joining lineman Daviyon Nixon (2020) and linebacker Josey Jewell (2017) and the second Hawkeye to be voted the Butkus-Fitzgerald Big Ten Linebacker of the Year (Jewell, 2017).

Moss, a senior, who was named the Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year in 2021, also repeats as a first-team selection. He recorded 46 tackles and led the team with 10 pass break-ups and had one interception. He is tied for seventh with 11 career interceptions.

DeJean made a significant impact for the Hawkeyes in his sophomore season. He played both cornerback and the CASH linebacker position in recording 68 tackles. DeJean leads Iowa with four interceptions for 77 yards, with two touchdowns. He also averages 17.6 yards on seven punt returns.

Benson started all 12 games while playing both the weakside and outside linebacker positions. The senior is second to Campbell with 88 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss, with one interception and a fumble recovery.

Evans has 37 tackles from his end position, while Van Ness has 34 stops while playing both end and tackle. Van Ness leads the team with 9.5 tackles for loss, while he and Evans both have six sacks to share the team lead. Evans is a senior, while Van Ness is a sophomore.

Merriweather, a senior, has started every game and ranks second on the team with three interceptions. He has 47 tackles and scored a defensive touchdown with a fumble return in Iowa’s win at Rutgers. He was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his play against the Scarlet Knights.

Shannon and Lee have started in the trenches throughout the season at the tackle position. Lee has collected 48 tackles, with 7.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Shannon is right behind with 44 tackles, including 8.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Shannon is a senior and Lee is a junior.

Punter Tory Taylor was a first-team selection in the media voting and third team by coaches. Kicker Drew Stevens earned second-team honors on the media team and third team recognition by coaches. Taylor has handled all punting duties, averaging 45.1 yards on 74 punts, with a long of 70 yards. In his junior season Taylor has placed 32 punts inside the 20 with just 11 touchbacks. He has 22 punts of 50 yards or more, while opponents are averaging just 3.7 yards on 18 returns.

Stevens is a true freshman who joined the program as a walk-on. He leads the team in scoring with 69 points, connecting on 16-of-18 field goals and all 21 PAT attempts. Stevens has a long of 54 yards. He also has handled kickoffs throughout the season, with 29 touchbacks on 51 kicks.

Iowa (7-5, 5-4) will find out its bowl destination on Sunday. The Hawkeyes are expecting their 20th bowl invite over the past 24 seasons under Moon Family head football coach Kirk Ferentz.

Hutchinson one of three finalists for Biletnikoff Award

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson is one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s outstanding FBS receiver regardless of position.

Hutchinson recently concluded one of the best careers in school history with one of the best seasons ever by a Cyclone wide receiver.

The Jacksonville, Florida, native, broke his own school record with 107, leading the nation in receptions and receptions per game (8.9) during the regular season. He’s one of just two receivers nationally with more than 100 catches.

He also led the Big 12 Conference and finished seventh nationally with 1,171 receiving yards.

Hutchinson caught at least eight passes in 11 of 12 games as a senior. He finished the season with six touchdown receptions, including the game-winner in Iowa State’s victory at Iowa in week two of the season.

In his three-year career, Hutchinson broke the Iowa State career record with 254 receptions and 13 100-yard games. He also posted a school-record nine games with 10 or more receptions. His 254 receptions were also a Big 12 record for three-year players.

Hutchinson reached the end zone 15 times in his career, tied for the fifth-most in school history.

Other finalists for the award are Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., and Jalin Hyatt of Tennessee.

Crusader boys hold off Audubon 60-51

The Coon Rapids-Bayard boys basketball team held off a fourth quarter charge from Audubon and beat the Wheelers 60-51 to open up the season on Monday night. The Crusaders controlled a solid chunk of the game and were up 41-31 heading into the final period. Audubon’s Aaron Olsen hit three big threes in the fourth to rally Audubon back within three at 47-44. CR-B responded with a 9-0 run to salt the game away.

Senior Lance Clayburg was a monster inside for the Crusaders, finishing with 28 points and had a lot of offensive rebounds to get second chance points. Freshman Cal Heydon was great down the stretch with 9 fourth quarter points to bring his total on the night to 23. Next up for Coon Rapids-Bayard is a home game with Stanton on Tuesday.

Audubon got 16 points from Aaron Olsen, 12 from Collin Bauer and 11 from Carson Bauer. The Wheelers drop the first game under new head coach Jacob Privia and will try to bounce back on Tuesday against Missouri Valley.

The Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders girls basketball team built an early big lead and raced away from the Audubon Wheelers for a 43-22 win on Monday night to open the season. Both teams struggled to get started with just a 9-4 lead for the Crusaders at the end of the first, but they would balloon that lead to 29-5 by the end of the half to seize control.

Audubon played stronger defense in the second half and Audrey Jensen hit a few threes to produce some scoring, but the Crusaders were too much. After the game Jensen said they improved a lot of things as the game progressed.

She talked about being an upperclassmen on a team with a mix of really young players.

Coon Rapids-Bayard was led by 20 points from Breeley Clayburg and freshman Anna Hart added 7. Next up for the Crusaders is a home tilt versus Stanton on Tuesday.

Audubon was led by 10 points from Jensen and 7 from Kade Sporrer. Audubon hosts Missouri Valley on Tuesday night.

Iowa State’s Holmes named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State senior guard Jaren Holmes has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for his performance last week at the Phil Knight Invitational.

Holmes helped Iowa State to a runner-up finish in the PKI Championship and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. He led the Cyclones in scoring on the week with 15.0 points per game, including 22 points in the win over No. 1 North Carolina. The senior guard averaged 31.7 minutes in the three games and scored double figures in each. Holmes also averaged 4.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals.

Iowa State returns to action on Wednesday against North Dakota. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. The game is available on Big 12 Now.

Drake’s Megan Meyer named MVC Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Drake senior guard Megan Meyer earned the most recent installment of the MVC Player of the Week award, the league announced Monday.

The Preseason All-Conference honoree and reigning MVC Newcomer of the Year put together a career weekend at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic in Miami, Fla. The senior guard averaged 20.5 points, 4.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and a block over two non-conference matchups. In the Bulldogs’ first tilt, an overtime loss to Atlantic 10 Conference favorite UMass, Meyer poured in a career high 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and 7-of-13 shooting from three-point range. She followed the personal best performance with another 16 points in a 97-60 blowout of Howard.

Meyer and the Bulldogs will return to action this Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Knapp Center with another non-conference tilt against Lindenwood.
