CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs placed right-hander Jason Hammel on the bereavement list and recalled right-hander Justin Grimm from Triple-A Iowa before Wednesday’s game with the Miami Marlins. The 33-year-old Hammel won his career-high 11th game Tuesday night with six shutout innings against the Marlins. He is 4-0 with a 1.86 ERA in his last five starts.
Because of a family matter, Hammel won’t accompany the team to Oakland for a three-game series against the Athletics this weekend. He’s expected to make his next start Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels at Wrigley Field.
Grimm, who was optioned to the minors on Saturday, has no record with a 4.72 ERA in 45 relief appearances with the Cubs this season. He made one relief appearance for Iowa, striking three in an inning on Monday.
UNDATED (AP) – The Associated Press has been ranking the best teams in college football for the last 80 seasons. For the first time since that first poll in 1936, the AP has compiled an all-time Top 100 based on a formula that counts poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (one bonus point) to acknowledge elite programs, and a bonus for AP championships won (10 points).
The top five teams using those criteria: Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama and Southern California. Nebraska was sixth, Iowa 25th, Missouri No. 35, Kansas State No. 44, Kansas 63rd and Iowa State tied with Fordham at 83rd on the all-time list.
Before the AP started asking its member sports writers and editors to vote for the top teams, then-sports editor Alan J. Gould in 1935 went about ranking them himself. In the final rankings he named Minnesota, Princeton and TCU co-No. 1s, and Gophers fans, as the story goes, hanged Gould in effigy. Gould, who died in 1993, recalled in 1985 that it created a “storm,” especially in the Big Ten. He quickly realized it was best to spread the blame — or responsibility — for the rankings around.
CINCINNATI (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals got two regulars back from injuries on Tuesday but lost shortstop Aledmys Diaz, sidelined indefinitely by a broken right thumb. The Cardinals activated Jhonny Peralta and Brandon Moss from the disabled list before the opener of a series in Cincinnati. Peralta recovered from a torn ligament in his left thumb. Moss had an injured left ankle.
Diaz was hit by one of Andrew Cashner’s pitches during a game in Miami on Sunday. He went on the 15-day disabled list and will need more than two weeks to heal. The Cardinals also added left-handed reliever Zach Duke, who was obtained in a trade with the White Sox on Sunday. They optioned left-hander Dean Kiekhefer and outfielder Randal Grichuk to Triple-A Memphis.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Scott Schebler’s three-run homer in the ninth inning rallied the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night. Brandon Moss and Tommy Pham hit solo homers in the eighth for a 5-4 lead, but the Cardinals couldn’t hold on.
Seung Hwan Oh (2-2) escaped a bases-loaded threat in the eighth, but gave up a pair of singles to start the ninth. Schebler connected for his second homer of the season and first game-ending shot. Jumbo Diaz (1-1) fanned Oh with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth to keep it 5-4.
Both teams are in action again this (Wednesday) evening. Pre-game coverage begins at 5:15 on KJAN, with the first pitch at around 6:10p.m.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Five-time defending national champion North Dakota State has been tabbed as the favorite to win this year’s Missouri Valley Football Conference title. The Bison earned 37 of a possible 39 first-place votes in the preseason poll conducted among the league’s coaches, sports information directors and select media representatives.
Northern Iowa received the other two first-place votes to finish second in the poll, followed by South Dakota State, Illinois State and Youngstown State. Rounding out the top 10 are Western Illinois, South Dakota, Southern Illinois, Indiana State and Missouri State. NDSU captured its fifth consecutive Football Championship Subdivision crown in January with a 37-10 win over Jacksonville State.
This is the fifth straight season that the Bison have topped the conference preseason poll.
The fall Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop is Sept. 16-18, at the Springbrook Conservation Education Center, adjacent to Springbrook State Park, north of Guthrie Center. While the focus of BOW is primarily for women, the workshop is an opportunity for anyone 18 years or older to learn outdoor skills. Workshop courses include basic fishing, Dutch oven cooking, birdwatching, kayaking, deer hunting, wild edibles, basic camping, intro to archery, intro to firearms, canoeing and more.
“This workshop is an excellent opportunity to try activities under the guidance of our top-notch instructors,” said Rachel Ladd, with the Iowa Departments of Natural Resources. “Our workshop is popular because we keep our class sizes small and the setting at Springbrook is beautiful, particularly in the fall.”
The cost for the workshop is $150 before Sept. 4, and $180 beginning Sept. 5. The fee includes program materials, equipment, lodging and meals. Enrollment is limited to 100 participants. A limited number of scholarships are available that can reduce the fee by $75.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — With the departure of Sean Smith, the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to second-year cornerback Marcus Peters as he steps into the role of the team’s No.1 cornerback. Peters had a breakout rookie season with eight interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns, and accolades included a trip to the Pro Bowl and being honored as The Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Just three days into camp, players and coaches believe Peters is just getting started Coach Andy Reid has seen his share of top corners, from Brian Dawkins to Troy Vincent and says he believes Peters can create his own legacy.
