Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Adrian Sampson got his first career win following opener José Leclerc in his first major league start and the Texas Rangers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3. Rougned Odor and Shin-Soo Choo homered in a seven-run second inning. Joey Gallo had both his hits in the highest-scoring inning this season for Texas. It was the Cardinals’ first game in Arlington since losing Game 5 of the 2011 World Series.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout and Albert Pujols had two hits each and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2. Matt Harvey pitched two-run ball for five innings, and the Angels opened a nine-game homestand with a win after dropping three of four. The Royals have lost three in a row and five of their last six.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have activated Carlos Martínez from the injured list after the right-hander missed the first 44 games of the season with a right shoulder cuff strain. The club also designated veteran right-hander Luke Gregerson for assignment before Friday’s interleague game at the Texas Rangers. Rookie reliever Ryan Helsley was recalled from Triple-A Memphis and right-hander Dominic Leone was sent down.

Atlantic’s Gearheart and Renaud advance to Boys State Golf

Sports

May 17th, 2019 by admin

Atlantic Trojan golfers Matt Gearheart and Cyle Renaud were able to advance to the Class 3A Boys State Golf Tournament on Friday but the team came up just shy.

Gearheart was Medalist at the District Tournament at Atlantic Golf and Country Club with a 74 and Renaud finished 3rd with a 76. Atlantic came up 4 shots shy of the top two teams with a 323 total. Norwalk shot 314 to win it and Carroll finished 2nd with a 319. Winterset was 4th at 347 followed by North Polk with 357.

Atlantic’s other scores were: Braden Smith 76, Tate Den Beste 93, Drey Newell 85, Garrett McLaren 93.

Atlantic Head Coach Ed Den Beste: “This was a day of delays. Had to wait close to 3 hours to tee off with lightning and thunder. Great to see Matt continue his great play. He qualifies as an individual again and this will be 4 state tournaments for him. Cyle also played well. He qualifies again as an individual and this will be his 3rd state meet. Braden had a good round but struggled to get pars on the back. Needed him to be a little lower. Tate had a rough start but had some good holes as well. Hopefully he will work on being consistent this summer. Drey continues to play at his pace. Had some putts that needed to go for him. Garrett had a better round than earlier this year. He needs to get out and play more. Disappointing that the team doesn’t go on but good to have two players move on.”
