Sports

December 4th, 2019 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State saw five of its volleyball student-athletes earn all-conference as part of the Big 12’s volleyball postseason awards, announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon.

Junior Candelaria Herrera and sophomore Eleanor Holthaus earned All-Big 12 First Team honors, junior Piper Mauck and redshirt sophomore Avery Rhodes earned All-Big 12 Second Team and freshman Annie Hatch was named to the All-Big 12 Rookie Team. All five are receiving their first postseason honors from the Big 12.

Herrera, a junior from San Juan, Argentina, has had a terrific two-way season for the Cyclones. In attack, she has 2.22 kills per set at a team-high .317 hitting percentage, an efficiency that ranks fourth in the Big 12. On defense, Herrera is second on ISU with 0.94 blocks per set, a number which rose to 1.18 per set against league opponents. She has 98 total blocks on the year, just two away from her second-straight 100-block season.

Holthaus, a sophomore from Richmond, Minnesota, was the Cyclones’ leading attacker throughout the 2019 season. The right-side led ISU with 3.24 kills per set, sixth in the Big 12, which she got at .255 hitting. Her 16 matches with at least 10 kills led ISU, while she also had four double-doubles on the year, posting 2.36 digs per frame. Holthaus earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after recording 19 kills against Oklahoma on Nov. 15.

Rhodes, a redshirt sophomore from Waco, Texas, has bounced back from a 2018 hip injury to have a big season for the Cyclones. Rhodes lads ISU in blocking with 1.06 blocks per set and has improved her hitting, notching 1.92 kills per set at .279 hitting. Rhodes was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after a 10-block effort at Ole Miss back in August. Two of her biggest offensive matches came in ISU’s biggest wins, notching 13 kills at .440 hitting at Iowa and 14 kills at .400 hitting vs. Oklahoma.

Mauck, a junior from Des Moines, has orchestrated the Cyclone offense while stepping up her defensive game in 2019. She is third in the Big 12 with her 10.36 assists per set, setting the ISU attack at a .238 hitting percentage. She has also called her number more frequently this season, recording 68 kills, including a career-high eight vs. K-State. Her 10 double-doubles lead Iowa State, while her 2.58 digs per set rank third on the team.

Hatch, a freshman from Mesa, Arizona, has become a reliable option on the pins for Iowa State. Hatch is second on ISU with her 2.80 kills per set, while her 274 total kills on the season ranks fifth among Cyclone freshmen in program history. She has 11 matches with at least 10 kills, with the highlights including 18 kills vs. Coastal Carolina and 17 kills against Western Carolina.

Iowa State will be in action for the First Round of the 2019 NCAA Volleyball Championship on Friday when they take on Creighton in Minneapolis. First serve will be at 4:30 p.m.

Sports

December 4th, 2019 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior kicker Keith Duncan has been named the Bakken-Anderson Kicker of the Year in the Big Ten Conference. Duncan and junior defensive end A.J. Epenesa were named first-team All-Big Ten by league coaches and media. Select individual honorees and defensive all-conference teams were announced by the Big Ten on Tuesday. Offensive award winners will be announced Wednesday.

In addition to Epenesa on the first defensive unit, junior defensive back Geno Stone (coaches) and senior defensive back Michael Ojemudia (media) earned second-team honors. Ojemudia was a third-team selection by the coaches and Stone earned media honorable mention.

Earning honorable mention recognition from both coaches and media were junior defensive end Chauncey Golston and senior linebacker Kristian Welch. Senior defensive tackle Cedrick Lattimore earned honorable mention from the coaches, while the media extended honorable mention honors to senior punter Michael Sleep-Dalton.

Duncan is the first Iowa kicker to earn the conference award since its inception in 2011. The award is named after former Wisconsin kicker Jim Bakken and former Michigan State kicker Morten Andersen. Duncan is one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award as the top kicker in the nation.

Duncan, a native of Grapevine, Texas, who attended Weddington (North Carolina) High School, set Big Ten and Iowa single-season records with 29 made field goals, a total that ranks sixth-best all-time in the NCAA. Duncan also set a school record with six field goal attempts in Iowa’s win over Purdue. His 34 attempts on the season are also a school record.

Epenesa, a native of Glen Carbon, Illinois (Edwardsville High School), earned first-team honors for the second straight year. He was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week following wins over Minnesota and Nebraska. He leads the Hawkeyes in tackles for loss (13-69), sacks (9-54), quarterback pressures (nine) and forced fumbles (three). He also has three pass break-ups.

Stone is a native of New Castle, Pennsylvania (Senior High School). He earns honorable mention honors for the second straight season after recording 65 total tackles (43 solo). Stone has three tackles for loss, three pass break-ups, two forced fumbles, one interception, and one recovered fumble.

Ojemudia earns his first all-conference recognition, starting 11 games while missing one contest due to injury. The native of Farmington Hills, Michigan (Harrison High School) leads the team with three interceptions. He recorded 36 solo tackles and 11 assists and has a team-best seven pass break-ups.

Welch joined the Iowa program from Iola-Scandinavia High School in Iola, Wisconsin. He started nine games at middle linebacker and led the team in tackles (80), despite missing three games due to injury. Welch recorded double figure tackles in Iowa’s final three games following his injury, helping the Hawkeyes to three straight wins. Welch totaled 7.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, three pass break-ups, and one forced fumble.

Golston was also recognized by both coaches and media while earning his first all-conference honors. The native of Detroit (East English Valley Prep High School) ranked second to Epenesa in tackles for loss (8.5-23). He also had 2.5 sacks, four pass break-ups, one interception, and seven quarterback pressures while starting all 12 games.

Lattimore, a native of Redford, Michigan, was a prep teammate of Golston before joining the Hawkeyes. He started all 12 games, recording 23 solo tackles and 17 assists. Lattimore also had three tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and a recovered fumble.

Sleep-Dalton joined the Hawkeye program as a graduate transfer. He is a native of Geelong, Australia. Sleep-Dalton averaged 42.1 yards on 54 punts, with a long of 63 yards. He placed 21 punts inside the opponent 20, with just four touchbacks, and had 10 punts of 50 yards or more.

Senior quarterback Nate Stanley is Iowa’s Sportsmanship Award recipient. The native of Menomonie, Wisconsin (Menomonie High School) started all 12 games in 2019 and all 38 games over the past three seasons as Iowa has posted a 26-12 record. Stanley passed for more than 2,700 yards with 14 touchdowns this season. He ranks second in career passing touchdowns (66) and pass attempts (1,128), and third in completions (655), passing yards (8,089), and total offense (7,993).

Iowa (9-3 overall, 6-3 Big Ten) is ranked 18th in the current Associated Press rankings and 19th in the coaches poll. The Hawkeyes are bowl eligible for the 18th time in the last 19 seasons. Iowa’s bowl destination and opponent will be announced Sunday.

Shotgun deer hunting seasons open Saturday, may bring 40K hunters

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

December 4th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Many thousands of deer hunters will be combing Iowa’s fields and forests this weekend as the first of two shotgun seasons will open Saturday. Tyler Harms, a wildlife biometrician with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, expects it to be a busy weekend and he reminds hunters to wear their blaze orange, follow the regulations, and report their harvest. “We’ll have about 40,000 or so hunters in the field during both seasons,” Harms says. “These seasons are also when we see the highest amount of deer harvested in the state. About 60,000 deer will be harvested here in the next few weeks in December.”

Harms predicts the deer harvested this month won’t fluctuate too much from 2018’s numbers. “We’ll be at least steady or similar to last year, maybe a slight increase this year, just because we’re seeing a slight increasing trend in our deer population statewide, but we’re still well within our population goal,” Harms says. “I would anticipate a very similar to slightly higher harvest.”

Mother Nature has a lot to do with those numbers and Harms notes this weekend’s forecast is for drier, warmer weather. “If you remember from last year, the first weekend of December, we had some pretty nasty weather statewide. It was really wet and snowy and cold,” Harms says. “It made hunting very challenging and we saw a pretty big decline in the harvest during that season but then the harvest rebounded in the second shotgun season when the weather cooperated a little bit more.”

The first shotgun season runs December 7th through the 11th, with the second season running December 14th through the 22nd.

Luka Garza scored 23 points, Jordan Bohannon and Joe Wieskamp added 17 and 13, respectively, and Iowa pulled away in the second half to defeat Syracuse 68-54 on Tuesday night. Marek Dolezaj led Syracuse with 12 points as the Orange suffered their third straight loss. Syracuse’s 4-4 record represents the program’s worst start in the 44-year tenure of coach Jim Boeheim and the worst start for a Syracuse team since the 1968-69 season when the Orange started 3-5.

The Hawkeyes’ victory marked a good rebound effort after an 83-73 loss to San Diego State, particularly playing short-handed without starter and 3-point specialist C.J. Fredrick and Cordell Pemsl.
