LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska’s priority is to heal up during the weeklong wait to find out its bowl destination. The 22nd-ranked Cornhuskers’ first run through the Big Ten took a physical toll. Five starters were injured or re-injured in Friday’s 20-7 win over Iowa. Coach Bo Pelini praised his team’s resolve for playing so well under the circumstances. The Huskers (9-3, 5-3 Big Ten) will find out Dec. 4 where they’ll go for a bowl. Offensive lineman Jeremiah Sirles said he and his teammates are disappointed that they won’t be playing for a league title, as they did the last two years in the Big 12, but they are excited about the prospect of winning 10 games for a third straight season.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Matt Gatens scored 22 points Saturday as Iowa beat IPFW 82-72. Bryce Cartwright and Zach McCabe each scored 12 points for the Hawkeyes (4-2), who had 33 points off turnovers. Frank Gaines scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting to lead IPFW (2-2). Marion Hines scored 13 points and Trey McCorkle added 12 for the Mastodons. The Hawkeyes came through in a sloppy game to snap a two-game losing streak. The teams combined for 39 turnovers and 43 fouls. Iowa led by 10 points at halftime, but IPFW stayed with the Hawkeyes for most of the second half. The Mastodons cut the deficit to 73-69 with 2:15 left, but Iowa’s McCabe and Devyn Marble answered with consecutive baskets to secure the win.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Landry Jones threw for 256 yards, Blake Bell punched in two short touchdown runs and No. 12 Oklahoma set up a Bedlam showdown for the Big 12 championship by beating Iowa State. Trey Franks finished with 88 yards rushing on two long reverses to set up scores for the Sooners (9-2, 6-2 Big 12), and Michael Hunnicutt matched his career-high with four field goals. Rebounding after allowing a school-record 616 yards allowed last week in a 45-38 loss at Baylor, Oklahoma held Iowa State (6-5, 3-5) to a season-low 245 yards and only let the Cyclones score after James Winchester’s snap sailed over the head of punter Tress Way in the first quarter. Oklahoma will visit No. 4 Oklahoma State next week with the winner earning the Big 12 title.

The Cyclones didn’t sustain a drive for longer than 35 yards and got their only points on Jared Barnett’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Albert Gary one play after Oklahoma’s botched punt. They got shut out the rest of the way, failing in their chance to pull off another monumental upset eight days after the biggest win in school history last week against then-No. 2 Oklahoma State. Iowa State hasn’t beaten ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks since 1974 and was trying to win for just the sixth time in 76 meetings with Oklahoma all time.

Each team turned it over four times in a game played in front of thousands of empty seats at sold-out Owen Field, with winds sustained at over 30 mph and gusting beyond 40 mph. The Sooners were able to find enough offense to win it. Bell scored on a 3-yard run and a 1-yarder, and Oklahoma settled for field goals on four other red zone possessions. After being practically unstoppable in the scoring zone a week ago at Baylor, Bell ran into trouble early on against the Cyclones. He was stuffed on Oklahoma’s first red zone possession, leading to Hunnicutt’s 20-yard field goal, and then threw an interception to Jake Knott the next time. But the Sooners kept going back to their third-string quarterback, who last week joined J.C. Watts and Jamelle Holieway as the only quarterbacks in the program’s history with four rushing TDs in a game. He scored on a 3-yard keeper in the second quarterto give Oklahoma the lead to stay, then smashed his way into the end zone from a yard out on the next possession to make it 17-6.

Hunnicutt added field goals from 28 and 36 yards to push the halftime lead to 23-6, and he provided the only points of the second half on a 21-yarder. Franks set it up with a 45-yard reverse, getting tackled at the 1-yard line before the Sooners’ goal line offense got stuffed. Jones failed to throw a touchdown pass for the second straight game and had two interceptions. Barnett finished with 125 yards on 13-for-28 passing with one interception, losing for the first time in four career starts. He also fumbled a first-quarter handoff to James White, after White had already fumbled on his first carry of the game.

The Cyclones also turned it over when linebacker Jevohn Miller muffed a kickoff that was blown around by the wind, leading to Hunnicutt’s third field goal of the opening half. Iowa State had its lowest yardage output since being held to 183 in a 52-0 shutout at Oklahoma last season.

Members of the Boyer Valley Community School District’s Board of Education, Wednesday, voted 6-to nothing (with one board member absent), to change their high school football team from an eight-man configuration, to 11-man. The change will go into effect for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. According to the Denison Review newspaper, the board will hold a special meeting Wednesday night in the high school auditorium, with regard to the decision.

Schools in Iowa have until next Thursday to make their football intentions known for the next two-years. Boyer Valley played 11-man football until making the switch to 8-man for the past two seasons.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (AP) — Deon Mitchell scored 16 points, Anthony James added 14, and Northern Iowa held on to beat Rice 64-60 Friday in a South Padre Island Invitational game. Jake Koch had 10 points for the Panthers (4-1), who were up 55-45 with 3:26 to play. Arsalan Kazemi, who led the Owls (4-1) with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Tamir Jackson, who scored 15, powered a 12-6 run that got Rice within four, 61-57, with 10 seconds left. After a Koch free throw, the Owls’ Connor Frizzelle, who scored 10 for the game, hit a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left to make it 62-60. Two free throws by James sealed the victory, Northern Iowa’s third straight. Kazemi’s double-double was his fourth in five games. He came in averaging 11.8 points and 12 rebounds per contest. Despite Kazemi’s efforts, UNI outrebounded Rice 35-31 and outscored the Owls 13-5 on second-chance points.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Maggie Lucas scored 18 points, including six in the final minutes, to help No. 17 Penn State beat Iowa State 66-59 in the opening round of the John Ascuaga’s Nugget Classic on Friday. The Nittany Lions (4-1) will play Nevada (2-2) on Saturday for the tournament championship. The Cyclones (3-1) were within two points with 4:30 left in the game after a Jessica Schroll jumper, but the Nittany Lions closed on a 9-4 run. Lucas matched her season high to lead three Penn State players in double figures. Zhaque Gray scored 14 points and Alex Bentley had 13. Brynn Williamson led Iowa State with 15 points.

Penn State was up 37-28 at halftime and led by as many as 12 in the game. The Nittany Lions overcame 58 percent free throw shooting (15-for-26) and 32 fouls called against them compared to 18 by Iowa State.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (AP) — Chris Allen scored 15 points, Royce White pulled down 16 rebounds, and Iowa State won its third-round game Friday at the South Padre Island Invitational, beating Providence 64-54. Tyrus McGee added 14 points for the Cyclones (4-1), who led by just four, 56-52, with 3:17 to play before a Bubu Palo jumper, a pair of McGee free throws and an Allen 3-pointer put the game away. Vincent Council led the Friars (4-1) with 21 points, and Gerard Coleman had 20 points and eight rebounds. The two were a combined 17 for 36 (47 percent) from the field, but their teammates were just 5 for 19 (26 percent).

Iowa State led by as many as seven in the first half, but Providence rallied after halftime to take a 34-33 lead on a Coleman 3-pointer. A White dunk and two Chris Babb 3s quickly put the Cyclones back up by seven.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Rex Burkhead, who started the week with his right foot in a walking boot, ran for 160 yards and a touchdown on a school-record 38 carries and No. 22 Nebraska defeated Iowa 20-7 on Friday. Burkhead pounded away at Iowa’s defense 4 or 5 yards at a time and looked like his old self after being held to a season-low 36 yards in last week’s loss at Michigan. He had eight carries for 39 yards on a 10-play drive that ended with his 2-yard run and a 20-0 lead early in the fourth quarter. Burkhead ran on nine of 15 plays of an 80-yard drive that produced the Huskers’ first touchdown. His 2-yard run around right end converted a fourth-and-1 inside the Iowa 30, and six plays later Kyler Reed scored his first touchdown of the season on a 6-yard pass from Taylor Martinez.

Nebraska’s coaching staff got Burkhead a record 38th carry on the second-to-last play of the game when the Huskers (9-3, 5-3) were in victory formation. Burkhead took a knee for a 3-yard loss. Burkhead came out of the 45-17 loss at Michigan banged up, and he was limited in practice all week. He started and finished strong, breaking a 14-yard run on the Huskers’ first play from scrimmage and then going for 8 and 6 yards. Ameer Abdullah spelled him, but never for more than two consecutive plays.

Nebraska is hoping to land a berth in the Capital One Bowl, if two Big Ten teams are invited to BCS games, or the Outback Bowl. Iowa (7-5, 4-4) could slip to the Meineke Car Care Bowl or TicketCity Bowl. The Hawkeyes avoided getting shut out for the first time in 11 years when Marcus Coker scored on a 2-yard run with 3:26 left. With Nebraska having joined the Big Ten this year, Friday’s game was long touted as the start of a natural rivalry. Iowa is Nebraska’s closest Big Ten opponent, and the farm states split by the Missouri River share a passion for football.

The universities further billed it as the inaugural “Heroes Game” and honored “citizen heroes” from each state at halftime. What happened on the field bore little resemblance to those big Thanksgiving week games Nebraska used to play against Oklahoma and Colorado. The Huskers and Hawkeyes were meeting for the first time since 2000, and Nebraska leads the series 27-12-3. Martinez was 12 of 22 for 163 yards, and Kenny Bell caught five balls for a season-high 93 yards. Cornerback Alfonzo Dennard shut down Marvin McNutt, holding Iowa’s record-setting receiver to two catches for 1 yard through three quarters. McNutt finished with four catches for 29 yards. Coker, averaging 118 yards a game, ran 18 times for 87 yards.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – Already eliminated from national championship contention, No. 12 Oklahoma heads into Saturday’s game against Iowa State focused instead on trying to win an eighth Big 12 title. And trying to avoid becoming the Cyclones’ next upset victim. Iowa State (6-4, 3-4) comes in riding the hot hand following the biggest win in the program’s history a week ago against then-No. 2 Oklahoma State. It was the second upset of a Top 25 opponent in the Cyclones’ current three-game winning streak and got them eligible for a bowl game after missing out last season.

The Sooners (8-2, 5-2) dropped out of the national title race after giving up a school-record 616 yards and losing at Baylor last week. They would be eliminated from Big 12 title contention with another loss.
