Atlantic Parks & Rec Director to meet with skateboarders Saturday

News, Sports

August 21st, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department Director Roger Herring says he plans to meet with local skateboard enthusiasts Saturday morning. During a meeting of the Park and Rec Board Monday evening at the City Park outdoor shelter, Herring said improvements to the skate park at Sunnyside Park should be completed soon, after much time and effort. He said “It has been a very involved project.” Herring said 18 4×10 sheets of skate park quality wood, each with 54 screws, half of which are stainless steel have arrived, and are scheduled to be assembled by the end of this week. In addition, protective surfaces have been applied.

Herring attributed progress on the project to the fact his staff have not had to do much mowing due to the dry conditions. Roger said he plans to meet with all skaters and/or their parents this Saturday, to talk about the skaters’ their responsibility in seeing to it that vandalism is curbed. He says the meeting will likely take place at 10-a.m. Saturday. He will tell the skaters and their parents about the liability issues, and that they need to take pride in the facility and “police it.”  Herring says if they make it through this fall without any damage being perpetrated to the park, he will likely make a commitment to buying some more pieces for the park, to replace missing and/or damaged and removed components.

He says also, a new sign with the rules and regulations will be placed at the site. Herring will go over those rules during the meeting Saturday, and persons who normally use the park, will have to sign-off on a form acknowledging they understand those rules. Additional details concerning Saturday’s meeting will be released within the coming days. Herring says there’s a whole different group of persons using the park, and the number of people using it is up as well, from last year.

Bowe takes part in first practice with Chiefs

Sports

August 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was on the field with the rest of his teammates Monday for the first time since signing his franchise tender last week. NFL rules prevent Bowe from practicing in pads until Tuesday, but he spent time working with quarterback Matt Cassel and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Bowe has been seeking a long-term deal and skipped the offseason program and the start of training camp. He signed his franchise tender on Friday, which means he’ll play under a one-year contract worth about $9.5 million. Bowe caught 81 passes for 1,159 yards and five touchdowns last season. The former first-round draft pick has at least 1,000 yards receiving four of his five seasons in the league.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – Former Iowa State forward Calvin Godfrey’s plans to transfer to LSU have fallen through after the player was unable to meet academic requirements.  The 6-foot-8, 230-pound Godfrey spent his freshman season at Iowa State before playing at Howard College in Texas last season. He was one of new LSU coach Johnny Jones’ first recruits, but LSU officials say in a statement released Monday that Godfrey is not eligible to enroll this semester and has been released from his letter of intent. Godfrey averaged 12.6 points and 7.0 rebounds at Howard last season. He played at Iowa State in 2010-11 before being dismissed from the team following an arrest for marijuana possession. Godfrey had also been suspended earlier that season for violating unspecified team policies.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Pedro Alvarez homered in the 19th inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates won the longest game in the majors this season, outlasting the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 Sunday. It took 6 hours, 7 minutes to finish. Both teams scored a run in the 17th, and each club used eight pitchers. Alvarez hit his 23rd homer, a solo shot off Barret Browning (1-3). Andrew McCutchen added a two-run single later in the inning. Wandy Rodriguez (8-12), who was set to start for the Pirates on Monday night at San Diego, got the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
