SAN DIEGO (AP) — Logan Forsythe and Alexi Amarista had key hits in a five-run fourth inning, and the San Diego Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 Tuesday night to send the slumping World Series champions to their 10th loss in 13 games. St. Louis maintained a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL’s second wild-card berth but dropped 10½ games behind Cincinnati in the NL Central. Forsythe, a homer shy of the cycle in Monday night’s 11-3 win over St. Louis, doubled in two runs and Amarista added a two-run triple as San Diego erased a 2-0 deficit in the fourth. Edinson Volquez (10-10) allowed three runs — two earned — and four hits in 5 1-3 innings, striking out six and walking six. He has a career-high 100 walks, the most in the majors this season.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have waived linebacker Cameron Sheffield to make roster space for linebacker Tamba Hali, who was suspended for Week 1 for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. The Chiefs announced the roster move Tuesday night. Hali did not count against the Chiefs’ 53-man roster while he was suspended for the season-opener against Atlanta. He’s eligible to return for this week’s game at Buffalo. Sheffield played in 17 games and made one start during two seasons in Kansas City, but he’d often been shuffled back on the depth chart. The former fifth-round draft pick only made eight tackles with the club after spending his rookie season on injured reserve. Hali is coming off a standout season in which he had 12 sacks and reached his first Pro Bowl.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa is fielding one of the youngest teams of coach Kirk Ferentz’s 14-year tenure. Youth is hardly the reason the Hawkeyes are off to such a dismal start. In a three-point loss to Iowa State, the Hawkeyes (1-1) didn’t record a sack or a touchdown, scoring just six points despite forcing four turnovers. Iowa held Iowa State scoreless after halftime, its offense couldn’t take advantage. On Saturday, the Hawkeyes host FCS school Northern Iowa — which nearly knocked another struggling Big Ten team, Wisconsin, on Sept. 1. Ferentz says the Hawkeyes need to start finishing plays and drives.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ only scheduled game without Tamba Hali certainly didn’t go well. Their leading pass rusher was suspended for the season opener, a 40-24 loss to Atlanta on Sunday, for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He was joined on the sidelines by cornerback Brandon Flowers, defensive tackle Anthony Toribio and safety Kendrick Lewis, all due to injuries. Hali was back at the Chiefs’ practice facility Monday, but it’s unclear whether any of the other ailing players will be ready for next Sunday’s game at Buffalo. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said Flowers is the most likely to participate when practice resumes Wednesday. The other two starters could miss yet another week.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Cameron Maybin hit a two-run homer, Will Venable had three RBIs and the San Diego Padres handed the struggling St. Louis Cardinals an 11-3 loss on Monday night. The loss dropped the Cardinals 9 1-2 games behind first-place Cincinnati in the NL Central. St. Louis, which has lost four of five, had its lead cut to one game over the idle Los Angeles Dodgers for the second NL wild-card berth. Maybin connected for his seventh homer off Jaime Garcia (4-7) that broke a 2-all tie in the fourth inning. Maybin had three hits and scored three runs. Chris Denorfia tied his career high with four hits and also had two RBIs. Logan Forsythe added three hits to tie his career high as San Diego matched its season best for runs and had 17 hits.
Lance Berkman is scheduled for season-ending surgery on his troublesome right knee Tuesday, leaving the St. Louis Cardinals without a dangerous bat as they try to secure a playoff spot. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny announced the news Monday before his team played the San Diego Padres. The defending World Series champions began the night with a 1½-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the second NL wild-card spot. Berkman, who had surgery on the same knee in May, traveled to Houston on Monday to meet with the medical team that performed the first operation. The same group of doctors will perform the surgery Tuesday (Today).
