Sports

September 21st, 2012 by Ric Hanson

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) – South Dakota State has reached an agreement to play Iowa State in the opening game of the 2018 football season.  The game is scheduled Sept. 1, 2018, in Ames, Iowa. The teams also played there four years ago, with Iowa State winning 44-17.

SDSU is an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision school, while Iowa State plays in the upper-tier Football Bowl Subdivision. SDSU now has four games against FBS schools scheduled in upcoming seasons. The other three are at Nebraska in 2013, at Missouri in 2014 and at Minnesota in 2015.

Chiefs, Saints piling up big yards in defeats

Sports

September 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs and Saints have more in common than their 0-2 starts: Both have offenses ranked in the top 5 of the NFL heading into their Week 3 game at the Superdome. Most of the offense has been wasted, though, or come when the outcome is already decided. The Chiefs have been spanked by Atlanta and Buffalo to start the year, while New Orleans has had to play from behind in games against Washington and Carolina. So while Saints quarterback Drew Brees has put up some decent numbers, and Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has made some nice grabs, it’s mostly been for nothing. Perhaps something will give when the teams meet Sunday.

Beltran big in pinch as Cards sweep Astros at home

Sports

September 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Pinch hitter Carlos Beltran snapped a sixth-inning tie with a two-run double and Allen Craig hit a three-run home run, powering the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory Thursday that completed a season sweep at home over the Houston Astros. Beltran’s double put St. Louis up 5-3, rewarding Jaime Garcia (5-7) for keeping it close and putting the Cardinals 2½ games up for the second NL wild card with 12 games remaining. They took care of business against the lowly Astros, who absorbed their 102nd loss. The Cardinals were 6-0 at home against Houston, their first season series sweep in St. Louis since 1996. Bud Norris (5-13) allowed five runs on five hits and five walks in 5 1-3 innings for Houston.
