Rains that fell across the KJAN listening area were certainly welcome, but they were not “drought busters.”  Even so, the risk of controlled burns becoming out of control has diminished for the time being. As a result, the Shelby County Emergency Management Agency has reduced the Fire Danger Index from “High” to “Moderate,” through this Thursday, August 30th. Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Seivert says people who had been holding off on conducting outdoor burns, may now do so, at least for the next few days. Seivert asks residents to continue to contact their Fire Chief and the Emergency Management Agency, with regard to the timing and location of any planned burns.

THE DENSE FOG ADVISORY ISSUED EARLIER THIS MORNING FOR PARTS OF WESTERN AND CENTRAL IOWA HAS BEEN EXPANDED, AND REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9-A.M.. THE ADVISORY NOW INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES IN THE KJAN LISTENING AREA…MONONA-HARRISON-SHELBY-POTTAWATTAMIE-MILLS-MONTGOMERY-FREMONT-PAGE-CRAWFORD-CARROLL- DALLAS-POLK-MADISON-UNION-RINGGOLD.

VISIBILITY WILL BE ONE -QUARTER MILE OR LESS THROUGH 9 AM. REDUCED VISIBILITIES WILL LEAD TO DIFFICULT TRAVEL AND WILL REQUIRE A QUICKER RESPONSE TIME.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN DES MOINES HAS ISSUED A DENSE FOG ADVISORY…WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM CDT THIS MORNING.  VISIBILITY WILL BE ONE -QUARTER MILE OR LESS THROUGH 9 AM. REDUCED VISIBILITIES WILL LEAD TO DIFFICULT TRAVEL AND WILL REQUIRE A QUICKER RESPONSE TIME.

A DENSE FOG ADVISORY MEANS VISIBILITIES WILL FREQUENTLY BE REDUCED TO LESS THAN ONE QUARTER MILE. IF DRIVING…SLOW DOWN…USE YOUR HEADLIGHTS…AND LEAVE PLENTY OF DISTANCE AHEAD OF YOU.

As of 9:00pm Saturday night we have picked up 2.33″ of rainfall for the storm total so far at the KJAN studios.  .52″ of that rain came during the overnight Friday until 7am Saturday with the rest of the rain occurring during the Aug 25th reporting period 1.81″.  Still light rainfall/sprinkles coming down in Atlantic.

The rainfall total through 7-a.m. Sunday was 2.38-inches.

Iowa State University climatologist Elwyn Taylor says the cooler temperatures and rainfall we’ve seen recently do not mean Iowa’s drought is finished. “It definitely has not broken yet, maybe has for a few locations, but for the most part it is still with us,” Taylor says. Some areas of the country though have seen the relief from dry conditions come. “The southeastern United States is done with their drought, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona — we won’t say done with the drought– but much moderated there and disappearing in places but still at strength in the Midwest and out into the Rocky Mountains,” according to Taylor.

Taylor says about 80-percent of Iowa’s rainfall comes from the Gulf of Mexico.  “We are seeing a flow of moisture, at least a moderate flow of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico,”Taylor says, “and it’s only about half the strength, or a little less than half the strength, and with that being weak we’re not seeing a real quick end to this”. While Taylor says factors influencing Iowa’s weather are moderating toward more normal temperatures and moisture in the immediate future, he expects the drought to continue into next spring in most areas.
